skipping updates

If you decide to skip the latest map update 2013.20 and then up date when 2013.40 comes out would you have to update 2013.20 before you go to 2013.40?

I ask because someone once posted they had skipped updates for a year then had to go back and update the skipped over updates before they could just update with the latest.

You

You only need to update when, and if, you wish to. If you want to skip 2013.20 and update when 2013.40 is released, you can do that with no problem.

Updates

I only update every other year (not that many changes that I need)
and never have a problem, mainly interested in new roads and new bridges.

Skipped updates

An update contains ALL the information needed to display a map with the new roads on it. It isn't a file that only has the update information in it. I bought a life-time subscription to map updates for my 750. The map info in the GPS was the info I downloaded and installed when my Nuvi was new and was about 2.5 yrs old. I only had to download and install the one file to bring my Nuvi up to date.

??

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying--or if I do, I disagree.

Is there any chance we're confusing map updates with WebUpdater or myDashboard firmware, etc. updates?

Updates?

The original question was about skipping MAP updates so that is the question I was answering. To answer your question about confusing them with firmware updates, no I am not confused.

Maybe I wasn't as clear in my answer as I should have been so let me try again. Each map update that you download has all the data in it that your Nuvi needs to operate (mapping info, POI data, addresses, etc.) If you had a Nuvi that only had the firmware installed on it, it would not operate as a GPS. If you then installed ANY map update file, the Nuvi would become a fully operational GPS.

I hope that clarifies my answer, Craig.

As mentioned

As mentioned, it appears that the OP is referring to map updates but even if it is referring to updates from Webupdater or myDashboard firmware, I think the answer would be the same. If your updating firmware the updates are cumulative so if you skip one you will get the fixed items in the next or any subsequent update. There is no need to install every firmware update.

I've skipped updates

if the changes they are making aren't important to me.
If my unit is working fine to me, I don't like to risk installing a update that could screw something up.

I was questioning the "one file"

What confused me was your statement that I read as saying map updates were a single file. Not a big issue. I believe I should have read this as a single update; i.e., if skipping one update, a double-update isn't needed to obtain the newest map.

I certainly don't beleive

I certainly don't beleive it is essential, but as long as I have the free updates, I will continue to update each release. I have a very fast internet connection and it take very little time to update and just maybe there will be a few streets or poi's that were not there before. But I do agree there typically are not many changes from update to update.
