I have a Nuvi 255w and just started using POIs. My question is: What format should I save sound files; wav or mp3?

wav, yes. mp3, no
The nuvi 255W can't play mp3 files so you'll need wav files. See the FAQ for details, including the need for sox.exe if you use a PC:

Silent pop-up alerts

I have so many alerts on my GPS that I got tired of hearing them, so I use silent alerts for a visual alert on some of them, like factory tours and stuff.

Ooops...forgot to do the sox thing. Maybe that's why I got an error for all the .wav files when I did an uploader earlier today. I'll let ya know how it turns out when I get home and try it again.
