What is your Nuvi missing?

Over the years, I've migrated from a Magellan receiver hooked to my old Palm m505 to a Garmin eTrex Vista to a Garmin GPSMAP60CS to the Garmin Nuvi 660.
Everytime I get a new unit, I use it for a while and think "This is much better than the last unit, but now I wish it had......"
About the only thing I wish the Nuvi 660 had was voice command capability and a better FM transmitter (or take it out and charge me less). Weather radar overlays would be pretty cool too smile Built in traffic receiver would be nice, I don't like having to have the cord in use to get the traffic info.

What is on your "I wish my Nuvi did this...." list?

Nuvi wish list

I wish it come with a voice command & combine with solo or passport to make it as a radar detector too.
that will be a must need tools for any car. to make it perfect, it should come with a carrying case which could put all the equipments instead of just the screen.

Temperature display

I would like my NUVI to have a display showing the interior temperature and the temperature outside. I think that will be a cool feature.

I wish the Nuvi had a "most

I wish the Nuvi had a "most use of freeways" routing instead of just shortest time because the shortest time is really the shortest distance not the shortest time. It will route over surface streets with traffic lights but does not consider the added time of the lights.

Also the FM transmitters sucks compared to my $20 Fm transmitter I own.

The ability to have categories for favorites and POI is missing. It can be done with POI to some degree but they need to make it take up to three levels of directories instead of just two.

The traffic map needs to provide more details like left lane blocked and we should be able to get the sign messages that are displayed on the roads and available on the Internet.

What is MY Nuvi missing?

Wish it had a Map button on all the screens so you did not have to hit BACK,BACK BACK,BACK to get back to the maps

Wish it had terrain options

Wish it had terrain options for hiking.

Some of these suggestions are out there. Not sure how much people expect for the same price that they paid. I just want simple things, really just more convenient displaying of data that is already in the unit.

-direction arrow on the front next turn display
-trip time AND ETA on the trip computer along with mi.
-elevation more convenient than the satellite display
-qwerty keyboard option
-speed controlled volume should be a no-brainer

Not looking for games and video.

Have you tried just holding the back button for a few seconds, then releasing? Works on my C330.

better routing control

I would like to be able to set more preferences concerning routing - something like: 1) avoid toll roads unless taking the toll road saves xx min or percent of trip time 2) prefer shortest route unless it is xx min or percent slower than the fastest route choice, 3) an ability to fine tune the type of road preferences and 4) some way to blend the shortest or fastest choice - example: I don't choose to drive an extra 20 miles on an interstate to save 3 minutes - and I'd like the routing algorithms to have a third "Artificial Intelligence" generated route that is closer to what I would pick - maybe it could "learn" from our route selections and build that into it's choices?

Or, if that is too hard - how about just showing a summary of distance and travel time for the fastest route and the shortest route and let me pick after I see choices?

I returned my C550 for the nuvi 660 to CC and have a question. On the 550 when I zoomed in it would hold at around 80 ft and kick out to about 150 or 200, on the 660 i can het it no closer than I think 100 and it always kicks out to 500ft. Is there away to change this only drawback I see as I don't ge a look of the roads like i did on the c550.

It would be nice to have a video player (like Sony PSP). It would be nice on an airplane trip or waiting in the airport. Plenty of room on those little SDHC cards.

ive used garmin and 3 different units for the last 6 yrs... and i WANT A SMALL NON-BEASTIAL device now... like you, i am DISAPPOINTED that garmin did not include its fabulous routing and interface with mapsource thru the pc... it works GREAT and im tired of my big fat unit... i JUST DONT GET IT!

Just got the 660..

and I wish it had:

1) POI's with phone numbers (the Mio C520 am about to return has that and it's a boon).
2) Ability to type in zip code AND city (and not just city). [Someone tell me I'm wrong and that it actually can do ZIP CODES. Again, the C520 can.]
3) QWERTY format and not simply ABC type. [Once again, the C520 has it.]

The reason I am returning the Mio c520 is because of the mapping it delivers --- I'm just so used to MapQuest and Google that the TeleAtlas mapping doesn't do it for me. Bummer.

What is your Nuvi missing?

first time, short time...

The ability to remove preloaded POI's that don't exist anymore. I bought my Nüvi 650 because I moved to new state. There have been numerous locations I've drove around-and-circles asking "where is it?" from Applebee's to Blockbuster to Wal-mart to Zaxby's (ya like how I got the whole A-Z thing in there:). When I get the chance, I search a POI's website to find it doesn't exist, and of course I don't know if it ever did. It would prove especially useful if one was inclined to be preventive and research ahead of time and remove big name POI's in their respective areas. Who knows, it could even find a link at the top the page here where all the "you's and I's" tell all the other "you's and I's", so we could remove them incase we ever happen to travel there.

I second the vote from viger6, there being separate volumes for the MP3 and Navigation sounds. I had to hack the voice file to increase its volume to match the MP3's.

If you would enlighten me as to how you did that...that would be GREAT! That is pretty much my only pet peeve with the 360. The fact that the mp3 is much louder than the voice, even when I have it wired into my car deck, having the system at normal human volume for the music leaves the voice quite low.

Old Fashioned

OK, so I’m old fashioned. But I’ve found convergent devices typically don’t do much of anything exceptionally well (just look at the Treo type devices out there – some good, but none great). I’m concerned GPS devices are heading for the same fate. I think it’s silly to have a video player and MP3 player in a GPS device because it will never have the video or sound quality that I want from either of those devices for watching movies or listening to music. But I would like my GPS device to be an excellent GPS device. I have an old GPSmap 60CS (used it for snowmobiling and now for hiking) and now a Nuvi 650. I love them both, but I’d like the 650 to have a quick way back to the map from other pages; a way to find a location using coordinates; quick, easy reliable and cheap traffic interface; downloadable routes; configurable data on map pages… you know, GPS device stuff. And, yep, you guessed it - I also want a cell phone that makes great phone calls, not play music and videos. But that isn’t happening either. smile

Missing Features on Nuvi 680

Here are the things I would change if made queen for a day:

1. Single screen press from any screen to return to map navigation page. Garmin forgot that this is the basic purpose to have one.

2. Different oganization of searches: Emergency Services, Man-made References (addresses, names, intersections, etc.), Natural References (lakes, mountains, caves, etc.), and Structures (hotels, shopping, banks)

3. Much greater individualization, voices, menus, search parameters.

I need to know which GPS you have and which voice file you're using. It's different if it's TTS or not TTS.

With a nuvi 680, I wish it

With a nuvi 680, I wish it had the breadcrumbs and route features... but I knew up front it didn't.

That said, I'd like to see a few things...
a- while the nuvi does route around some stuff, it often will send me through city streets with lots of lights. Plus these tend to get congested, but are too small to be tracked via the traffic sites. So I don't think I EVER actually follow the suggested route to and from work. If anything, I use it for traffic alerts and estimated times.
The short version is this: great for going places you don't know. Not as useful for something like a commute where my human brain can out route a nuvi. Granted, I know the mathematical graph theory stuff is tough, but I wish the routes were better (not a complaint mind you)
b- if you try and add a waypoint while 'recalculating' it will auto make it a new destination
c- a one touch button to go back to the map
d- a one touch button to mute (instead of 3 screens in)
e- auto trip reset each time you put in a new destination

Might be nice

It might be nice to be able to choose which screen the nuvi loads by default. If I'm not using it I would rather it displayed the map instead of the "where to?" screen.

i wish

i wish they would allow us to manipulate the map. Making changes to freeway onramps, remove old data... It may sound as too much, but it would be cool if we could make the necessary changes to the local streets we live in. I haven't purchased an update yet but I feel like roads that are 3 years old that are not on the 2007 maps take too long to be reported. Too much red tape i guess. Maybe they should hire that guy from the hotel.com commercial. The one that goes around town with a tape measure. =)

i think they already have this feature.

It's possible

kane671 wrote:

According to the manual you can add only 1 stop to your route. I would like to be able to plan my route with multiple waypoints on my computer and then upload to the Garmin.

You can plan a route with multiple waypoints/stops on your computer. It just takes a couple of extra steps. First, get the lat/long coordinates of your intermediate stops. Then create a custom POI file with the stops in the order you want, save it as "next trip" or "Christmas Vacation", etc and upload it to your Nüvi as a custom POI. That way, you can have as many stops as you want.

Now, it won't automatically jump you from one stop to the next, but it's very easy to bring up the custom POI list, select the next stop and GO. Delete the route when you no longer need it.

Then again, the smart folks here might just be the reason Garmin won't take the time/effort to add these features to the "lesser" Nüvis, if they monitor this (and other) sites... wink

Heck of a list but hopefully Garmin reads these types of posts and does something about them.

I think we'll see a QWERTY layout for the Nüvis...eventually. After all, how long was the Street Pilot 27xx series out before they offered QWERTY in a firmware update? Quite a while...

Just takes time, although when I asked Garmin about why the updated the Street Pilot to QWERTY AFTER the Nüvis came out, they said there were no plans to offer QWERTY for the Nüvi line. Let's keep bitchin' and I'm sure they offer it sooner or later.

Re: What is your Nüvi missing?

Hi hotdram,

The very first thing I noticed missing on my Nüvi 670, was the lack of a BUGATTI VEYRON (PRICE: $1,200,000) to mount it in...

On the serious side, I'm happy with my Nüvi 670. What I'd like to see is software (using built-in templates) that would make creating POI.csv and Poi.gpx files a breeze, and would also work using the Mac OS.

Nuvi Power Cord

I am now on my 3rd Garmin and they seem to be going Backwards in a few Areas. The Power Cord on my New 650 looks Very Much like the Crappiest power cord I ever had on a Cell phone ( the Old Motorola cords) My Etrex used the Wonderful and Very Common USB..Even my 330 had a great plug in cord. The Other things have been named here a couple times..Routing ( this is very useful in my Etex) they seem to be Dumbing down the Nuvi. A Simple Volume, My C330 has a Great volume dial on the right side..is that too low tech...it sure is missed. 2 or 3 menus to change volume sucks..and my 330 has MAPS at the bottom at all times...man that is nice...I just may be sending the Nuvi back to Costco, and go for a C530...But I LOVE the big screen..and it is Uber cool..
