What is your Nuvi missing?

Over the years, I've migrated from a Magellan receiver hooked to my old Palm m505 to a Garmin eTrex Vista to a Garmin GPSMAP60CS to the Garmin Nuvi 660.
Everytime I get a new unit, I use it for a while and think "This is much better than the last unit, but now I wish it had......"
About the only thing I wish the Nuvi 660 had was voice command capability and a better FM transmitter (or take it out and charge me less). Weather radar overlays would be pretty cool too Built in traffic receiver would be nice, I don't like having to have the cord in use to get the traffic info.
What is on your "I wish my Nuvi did this...." list?

Ability to disregard POI behind me
The first time I used my nuvi on the interstate, I was frustrated by the fact that it shows POI's that I had already past, and I don't have the option to see only the ones ahead. When I am looking for fast food restaurants I don't care about the ones behind me.
I agree with those who would like the ability to add more than one waypoint.

I wish....

Transfering Routes
I just bought a Nuni 660, I used to have a Garmin V. I could add waypoints, routes, etc. on Mapsource in my desktop and then download that info to my Garmin unit.
How do I do that with this Nuvi 660?
Thanks so much.
Jim
.
You can send Waypoints/Favorites from MapSource to your nuvi 660, but that unit does not support stored routes.
Nuvi 750 Can Disregard POIs Behind Current Location
When searching for POIs while a route is active the Nuvi 750 provides an option to search only on the route forward of your location. I don't know about the 260W.
Wish list
I wish that:
I could add in a road. I am in a newer area and the best way out of my neighbourhood isn't on the map.
There was an video input so I could add a back up camera to it.
Be able to plan a trip or Vaction with it easier. Like make all the POI's I want to go to and have it figure out the most efficent path.
I have a MSN traffic but I wish that I could report a road that is closed because it invaribly tells me to go down it and I always have to wait until I am past it to get the right route.
You're Spoiled
You folks are spoiled. I have a Garmin 260 and it's so much better than nothing that I'm thrilled to have it help me fine addresses. I guess it all boils down to wanting more than you have.

I am spoiled too. I just love my Nuvi, but every time something new comes out we want the newest thing.
Good for business and for us to dream and discuss.
Have a great day!

No matter where you are "Life is Worth Living".
It would be great if..
Nuvi 350... I often change route between fastest time and shortest distance. I hate to have to scroll through the menu screen to triggle back and fourth. It would be great if there is an external triggle button or button in the main screen.
I wish
I wish my GPS would stop telling me to drive through the community center parking lot instead of the main road. Isn't there a way to fix this?
260W Nuvi
.
No.
Garmin "Skin"
I'd like to see a rubberized "skin" like the ones used on some of the mp3's. My Garmin 255W is great- I love it -- but these units are very flat & dense---& while that's a good thing, it will be a bad thing if ever dropped. I've heard of several people who have dropped & ruined theirs -- & a rubberized skin would surely provide some extra protection.
prefered road types
Great thread. Hope Garmin Product Management is reading it. Here goes...
#6: Ability to specify a particylar road to avoid, example avoid I-495 DC Beltway anytime of day.
That reminds me - one of the features of Microsoft's map program is being able to set Prefered road types. I'd like to see something similar in my Nuvi. You can't tell it to avoid specific roads, but you CAN tell it to avoid toll roads, or surface streats, or if you really want to, freeways, as much as possible.
navigation volume too soft
i had a nuvi 350 and now have a 660 the navigation volume is way to soft on the 660. i would love to know how to "hack into to voice file".
I wish my Nuvi Had...
Have you checked out the NUVI 880?
You can plan routes on your computer and on the nuvi with multiple stops,
It is voice activated, Has some Internet access thru MSN, and all of the features of the 660, Plus a replaceable battery, Dual speakers,

Free books?
I know that is not what the original title of this thread means, but I just discovered that I don't have any sample audio books on my Nuvi 360.
This is either because none came when Garmin replaced my 350 with a 360 after I sent the 350 in for service, or they got lost when I downloaded a new level of software, or more recently installed 2009 maps.
I just saw the titles of some other threads about possible ways to get free audio book downloads but wouldn't mind getting the original sample books.
Bernie
The ONLY sample book I got with my 760 was a very short clip out of a Dilbert book. I deleted it. As for free audio books, go to http://audible.com/garmin
GPSMAP 76CSx - nüvi 760 - nüvi 200 - GPSMAP 78S
nRoute
Multiple waypoints, and the ability to make routes on MapSource and upload them to the Nuvi, and download tracks from the Nuvi.
I have downloaded tracks from my Nuvi 760 numerous times with Mapsource. Its really impressive. I'll upload some screnshots on how to do it a little later - will tkae me a few to set upo the webpage just right
I tested sending routes from map source to my nuvi - it supposedly got sent...but I cant seem to find it on the nuvi.
One thing I wish i could do is have my nuvi recognized as a gps when connected to my coomputer. I'm able to send/recieve data with Mapsource between the gps/pc, garmin's POI Loader, and webupdater, but for the life of me I cant get gStart to recognize my gps, or get Mapsource to read my current location from the gps.
Have you tested you unit with nRoute?

I wish my Nuvi did this....
I wish my Nuvi had the ability to become "stealthy" each time I parked in a place where it could become stolen. I hate having to move it from the windshield when using the mounting bracket, or hiding the beanbag at other times. But, I guess if I want to keep my Nuvi with all the evil doers lurking, it is a necessary step each time I park.
Maybe Garmin can rig up something on future models that acts like a stun gun and zaps any low-life that attempts to steal someone's GPS with about 50,000 volts!

Adjust volume and speed

See this thread for a program that lets you easily change the volume and speed of your TTS voice file. Very easy to use, plus you can change some of the spoken text as well.
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/16263
On my 350, I had the same problem. MP3's and alerts sounded MUCH louder than the navigation prompting. This program will let you adjust your navigation volume up to match the level of MP3s and alerts.

Garmin has the thinking that we should upgrade to a new unit to get more features. These features are software related and should be updated on older units as well. I was dissappointed to find out that the Nuvi 600 series had been discontinued. I just hope they don't stop supporting or updating it. I can't afford to upgrade to a new unit each year because they add new features.
Another feature I would like to see is an option to choose a route instead of having to go through multiple menus to change my preference. My wife's built in system asks her which route she would like, fastes, shortest, or another route. This would give me the option to chooose which one to use instead of hearing the "recalculating" voice when I decide to go a different route.

Nuvi
I wish my nuvi would allow you to input a friends current location and then calculate a rendezvous using a user selected location like a gas station or something similar.
Faster time/Shorter distance...

All Garmin units before the nuvi and all Garmin hand-helds that support routing have this feature before the route is calculated (faster time/shorter distance/off road) . It has yet to be seen on any nuvi. It's likely they will add this back in sometime on a new nuvi model and make users pay $300-$500 to "upgrade" to this standard feature that has been available for years on non-nuvi units.

It's amazing how GRSr manufactures ,reverse engineered their products, when they fist came out the units where very feature rich. then they realized they could make more money by striping them down and making different models out of what used to be in the originals. Companys have still held back some of the stuff like bread crumbs a compass and of course the route choice up front when you input the address, along with a few more.

nuvi 650 qwerty keyboard
It is quite frustrating to use the keyboard on the nuvi 650. I wish qwerty keyboard was available.... is there any way to modify any of the files to do this?
.
Yes, you can get a qwerty keyboard. Here are the steps:
1. Withdraw $300 from your bank account.
2. Buy a Garmin 750
LOL
Seriously though, there is no way to modify the 6xx series to get the qwerty keyboard. It would be a simple software upgrade by Garmin to add this feature to the 6xx series, but Garmin is too greedy to do that.
A better power connector for
A better power connector for the GDB50 MSN Direct reciver. One that didn't break removing it from the 12 volt power outlet.
Completely Agree

I just posted about this on another thread.
I wish that Garmin would provide the option to upgrade to new versions of their software. Not just bug fixes, but new features and interface changes that the newer units have. It's ridiculous to expect someone to buy a new unit just to get the latest features or interface changes. Yes some of these are hardware specific, but many are not. For example, I hate that I can't see my current speed while following a route. The new units have a redesigned interface that now shows this info. There's no reason they could not offer that as a paid upgrade.
enjoy what you shop for and be happy with it.

Even if you know nothing about electronics, you have to know know that electronics become obsolete just about the time they hit the store shelves. Manufacturers are always making things bigger and better and that means that about the time we are buying something new today, there is something else that is better that is about to be released tomorrow. So don't loose any sleep over it, You just have to be a very sharp buyer comparing features you need at this moment in time, then fore get about tomorrow. because your new GPSr will be obslete, it's just the nature of electronics.

Not Necessarily

Yes, some electronics do become obsolete quickly these days, but it also seems that some of the newer technology is being designed to allow upgrades via software/firmware. My point is that if it is software driven, then certain features can be added to older units without the need to upgrade the hardware. I can get a software upgrade for my PC, PS3, handheld, and cell phone that may provide additional features to the device. Why can't I do this for my GPS unit? I know part of the reason is that Gamin is a hardware manufacturer that just happens to use software. They primarily make their money from users buying new units. My point is that they can also generate revenue by providing software upgrades as well.

I would like to be able to download to my PC where I have been. The bluetooth on my 660 seems to alwasy stop working.

poi's on route
I'm downloading updates so I cant check but you can search for regular poi's near your current location, on your route or at your destination. Is this an option for the custom poi's as well?
I'm having an issue with the alerts. I have downloaded custom poi's with alerts and it is hit and miss.
good luck
routes
As a work around you can put in your final destination then add your first destination as a via point.
I prefer to just find everything before I take off then I can just choose recently found as I leave one destination to drive onto the next. It would be nice to see a route and how much time it would take from point b to a before I scheduled appts but then we have google.
good luck
What Is Your Nuvi Missing?
This was previously mentioned but the QWERTY layout for the keyboard would be nice. One thing that I'm not sure if any of them do is to have your arrival time in your arrival time zone. The unit has to know where your at so why doesn't know the correct time?
What is your Nuvi Missing?
The ability to change what displays on the screen (i.e. change arrival time to miles to, etc).
More discretion in route selection
1. More discretion in route selection. For example, I live in the Los Angeles area. My 680 is configured to only avoid off roads and to chose the quickest route.
I want freeway preference mode. I do not want to take the all too frequent street routes (as the bird flys). Get off freeway, then get back on freeway. It's a waste of time.
2. I want a light sensor to determine whether to dim the light setting not when it thinks the sun rises or sun sets.
These two features were on my 2005 Magellan RM 700.

What's Missing On My Nuvi 650
The only thing that I would like to see on my Nuvi 650 would be for it to tell me which DIRECTION and what stocks to pick each day.

I wished gps' came with more
I wished gps' came with more POI's I often cannot find what I want on the gps and have to enter addresses manually. there should be a way to download POI's from garmin directly from satellite without the need of a poi loader or similar
.
Hmmm ... directly from the satellite?
I hope aren't thinking that this information would come from the GPS satellites.
The GPS satellites are owned by the government not by any GPS manufacturer.
And all they transmit is a microwave signal which, in junction with the signal from 2 or more additional GPS satellites, allow the GPS receiver to calculate its position and speed on the planet.
There is no ability for the GPS satellites to transmit POI information to GPS receivers. And certainly not information from a particular manufacturer.
