What is your Nuvi missing?

Over the years, I've migrated from a Magellan receiver hooked to my old Palm m505 to a Garmin eTrex Vista to a Garmin GPSMAP60CS to the Garmin Nuvi 660.
Everytime I get a new unit, I use it for a while and think "This is much better than the last unit, but now I wish it had......"
About the only thing I wish the Nuvi 660 had was voice command capability and a better FM transmitter (or take it out and charge me less). Weather radar overlays would be pretty cool too smile Built in traffic receiver would be nice, I don't like having to have the cord in use to get the traffic info.

What is on your "I wish my Nuvi did this...." list?

The Nuvi is missing its easiness of adding POI simply by pressing button on screen. Rather than adding it to a program and transferring it to device is a pain.

I don't see how it can get much simpler. Downloads take a few seconds and another few to load them on the unit. You can then bring up the ones you want to save and put them in your favorites. Missing sample audio books

I know that is not what the original title of this thread means, but I just discovered that I don't have any sample audio books on my Nuvi 360.

This is either because none came when Garmin replaced my 350 with a 360 after I sent the 350 in for service, or they got lost when I downloaded a new level of software, or more recently installed 2009 maps.

I just saw the titles of some other threads about possible ways to get free audio book downloads but wouldn't mind getting the original sample books.

I have a 350 also, and have several times seen a popup and heard the 350 say, "A better route is available". Clicking that will take the alternate route. What is believed is that on some routes, the GPS changes it's mind when you get closer to your destination for some reason.

I've gone from an eMap, to a GPS60c, to a Street Pilot 2620 to a Nuvi 650. And what I miss on the Nuvi most is being able to do routes in mapsource and upload them to the gps. I can't believe Garmin left that out. Also, adding "Places" to the "where to" menu would be a nice touch. I was planning a route from home to Mt. Rushmore, and the ONLY way I could do it was by zooming way out in the map, then scroll around zooming in and out till I found it!

I wish my NUVI could...

The ability to create a specific route on a pc and download it to the NUVI would be great for motorbike rides.

Here's hoping the NUVIfone, www.garmin.com/nuvifone, will do some of these things!

Specific Road Avoidance/Preference

I've been using my Nuvi 760 for about a month now and for the most part I'm happy with it. I bought it for my upcoming vacation and wanted to get familiar with it before I went.

Since you've asked, I wish that there was a way to tell the Nuvi that I have roads I want to avoid or that there are roads I prefer. The one thing that Garmin doesn't seem to realize is that while some roads may look good on a map, those roads sometimes have more traffic lights and are worse in the car!

No matter where I am going, the Nuvi wants to take me down Wadsworth Boulevard (CO-121), a local road that has a traffic light at (practically) every corner and a speed of 40 instead of a side road only a mile west of that major artery that has a speed of 35 and only three traffic lights along the entire route I would use it for.

I know I could force it to eschew CO-121 by simply inserting waypoints along the side-road, but this is a huge hassle. So I let it tell me to go down Wadsworth and then I drive down Garrison anyway. (Of course, at every corner the woman sounds irritated with me... "in 500 feet, turn right on Jewell Avenue... Turn right on Jewell Avenue... Recalculating. In .2 miles turn right on Florida Avenue..." and on she goes for the next three miles.

I used to use a mapping program years ago that had a feature whereby I could select a road and rate it as "avoid" or as "prefer" when plotting routes. The software stored it in a data table and then when programming routes, it took these preferences into account.

It would be nice if I could tell the Nuvi that I prefer Roads A, B, and C... and that I dislike roads D, E, and F. Then, when they are within a certain tolerance of diversion from an "optimal" route, the system would use my preferences. Garmin loves routing me to work along Hamden Avenue (another road that seems like a good idea because it is a major artery and has a slightly higher speed than say, Yale Avenue...)

I raced a friend the other day to test whether this is the best route. The rules were that you had to go the speed limit and obey all traffic laws. While The speed limit is only 30 on Yale and is as high as 45 on Hamden, the fact that Yale has fewer lights (and far less traffic) put me in the office parking lot about five minutes ahead of the route that Garmin reccomended!

Garmin needs to learn: it's not always about the math that you can see on the map.

Multiple waypoints

I did a lengthy study of comparing the various Garmin Nüvi features and decided that the 260W fit my needs the best. Quite satisfied wit it, but could make good use of a multiple waypoint feature. I believe to get that I'd have to pay for the FM receiver capability, which I didn't want. My 260W has the capability for only one waypoint.

As has been mentioned in other posts, some kind of route learning feature would be nice too. I always take a particular road that the Garmin never selects. After several trips the Garmin could just use that road as a default.

Road avoidance and better lane change guidance

Would really like to have the ability to tell the system (Nuvi760) to avoid certain roads. There is a road near my home that the system is always telling me to take but unfortunately the road is not complete. Also there are times when I know that certain roads are closed i.e. due to construction but the route still wants me to take that road and I have to wait until I am coming up on the road to tell the unit to avoid it. Also I would like to see a better display that shows what lane I should be in so I could plan ahead when turns are coming up.

I create routes on MapSource version 6.14.1 with multiple waypoints and download the routes into my 760 all the time. Then I just go to the "My Data" menu and select "Import Route from File" from the menu and select the route or routes I downloaded, select "Import" and they will then appear under routes as one of the selections available.

I also found it is quite simple to upload the tracks from the Nuvi into MapSource and each one appears as a seperate selectable entry.

The only thing I would like is to be able to purchase a backup camera from Garmin that interfaced directly with the 760.

I have downloaded tracks from my Nuvi 760 numerous times with Mapsource. Its really impressive. I'll upload some screnshots on how to do it a little later - will tkae me a few to set upo the webpage just right

I tested sending routes from map source to my nuvi - it supposedly got sent...but I cant seem to find it on the nuvi.

One thing I wish i could do is have my nuvi recognized as a gps when connected to my coomputer. I'm able to send/recieve data with Mapsource between the gps/pc, garmin's POI Loader, and webupdater, but for the life of me I cant get gStart to recognize my gps, or get Mapsource to read my current location from the gps.

How to find the downloaded routes!

skunkape wrote:

Just do the following after you "Transfer" the routes to the GPS from MapSource: Just go to the icon for "My Data" and select it then select "Import Route from File" from the menu and mark the selection boxes for the route or routes that you downloaded, then select "Import" and they will then appear under routes in the route menu as one of the selections available.

No favorites "categories". All my business favorites are mixed with my personal favorites on the 680
Not waterproof, or even resistant
No display brightness dimmer
Sound is not as good.
The Find, Menu, Map and Speak buttons are great. Try to repeat a missed command on the Nuvi.
2720 can automatically increase the volume with increasing speed
keyboard can be a qwerty, and with numbers
2720 can slow down or speed up the speech rate
there are 9 "avoidance" settings plus custom
the 2720 has a "coordinates map" that displays coordinates right off the map

The Nuvi's have other great features, but why not have these original features with the new models too. I am impatiently waiting for the next generation.

I had a Nuvi and got rid of it because it was so stripped down. When Garmin introduced the Nuvi they engineered and designed it with tech deficient people in mind, and have basically kept it there since. The only thing they managed to do was make it thin, then crapped out the sound quality.
So actually they have been steadily removing the best features since the premier of the Nuvi.

I guess they have to compete in todays market, and it's a tough one.

Those of you new to GPSr's might not agree, however those that remember the early streetpilots will know what I speak of.

My two cents.

Nuvi 660 needs:

QWERTY Keyboard that greys out letters that are no longer possibilities in the street or city names. Audio confirmation of each pressed letter VS. just a "beep". I know that the newer Nuvi's have some of these along with voice recognition. I smell an upgrade ...

Not a lot!

I have a simple 250W and it does just fine - hate these things with too many "add on" functions. Nice to play with but when you are just getting from A to B lets keep it simple please.

The one function they should add is the ability to tell the machine to navigate AND charge OR compute AND charge when a standard USB is plugged in.

You wouldn't have guessed it, but I'm not really a gadget person. While I do want my car to go 0-60 in 4.8, but I don't want any flash about it, more stealth. At work they had to pry my 2 y.o. ThinkPad out of my hands to get me to upgrade to the latest/greatest HP. Who needs a lightscribe DVD burner, this is work! Also don't need a widescreen and 4 gb ram. I was happy with 512mb.

Anyway, not having a QWERTY keyboard immediately made no sense to me in the 660. I believe that's been corrected on the 760, right? The 660 isn't that old, I'm amazed they didn't offer an easier way to type. Nice if a firmware flash could add this feature.

Hmmmmmm, I don't think that a accurate statement!

Consumers are talking to you Garmin "It's Time to Listen to Us"

My wish is that Garmin would actually care what we the consumers think, and take note to the wish list.

With that said I know consumers want low prices, and the GPSr field is becoming flooded with very good competition at really low pricing. So Garmin has to compete for it's life making cuts we the consumers don't like, while other company's, are developing units with all the things and options Garmin has cut or is charging extra for such as traffic. And these company's will knock Garmin off the pedestal they have held for so many years.

Wake up Garmin we are talking to you directly!

My favorite GPSr is already not a Garmin, because of your cuts in features, and your extremely high prices if I wanted those cut features.

My next purchase may make me Garminless for the first time in many years, if things don't change real fast, because there are now to many fish in the sea.

How about?

How about a GPSr that does GPSr stuff really well! No half-baked music player (it’ll never be as good as my cheapest radio), no cameras (it’ll never be as good as the cheapest digital camera), no talking to my cell phone, no wiping my fanny (sorry…). There is no convergent device on the market of any kind that does even a fraction of the stated functions well... PLUS they end up not doing the intended function nearly as well as it should. The more they try to do, the less they concentrate on the intended function, and the more (hw/sw) conflicts that occur causing problems with the intended function.

I’ll probably get a lot of disagreement with this, but just look at the iPhone. A really neat innovative device that doesn’t do a particularly good job of making phone calls. Even earlier smartphones, like the Palm Treo line, were plagued with “phone” and email issues. I had a Treo650 for years and liked it, but it didn’t excel at being a phone or email device. If Palm didn’t worry about playing music, playing movies, playing games, taking pictures, etc, maybe they would have done a much better job at the stuff that was suppose to make it so smart.

Please make my Nuvi the best device possible at showing me where I am, showing me where I want to go, and get me there in the best possible manner. That will take up-to-date maps, careful interaction with local traffic conditions (maybe even help stimulate innovation that will get the info to the consumer/user), easy to use interfaces, etc.

My soap-box just collapsed under my considerable weight, so I’ll quit now. grin

Wake up!

I agree completely. I have only owned Garmins, but during my last purchase I was tempted to purchase a different brand with more features.

While Garmin is still the market leader in the US, their lead is decreasing. I predict that if they don't make some fundamental changes in their products, they will lose the lead within a year or two.

IMHO, Garmin needs to do two things. First, streamline the product line. Garmin has WAY WAY too many different models. It is confusing for the consumer and also difficult for the retailers to stock so many different models. (As of today there are 21, yes 21, different Nuvi models. And that's not counting the discontinued Nuvi models!!!)

Second, add some customizable options to the units. It dumbfounds me that Garmin hasn't done this already. It only requires revising the software.

Garmin better make some changes pretty soon. All you have to do is look at their stock price to see that they are heading in the wrong direction.

I agree

You are right, I bought my 260 in April and with the new 255 out now, it is only a mater of time before the 260 will be discontinued. From what I have read here, there may be features that can be download (ie: Query keyboard to mention one) to us . We all paid good money and yes, the Nuvi is good, but I guess if you want new features you have to upgrade. It would be nice if Garmin had a Menu of upgrades for a small fee....... Query keyboard $10.00 - download
