I can't see my POI

I'm new and I looked but can't find an answer to my questions. I hope someone can lead me to the right place.

I have a Colorado 400t. I have loaded POI and I can see a list of the POIs however none show up on the map screen. How do I get the POI show up with an icon on the screen and were do I get the icons?

Still need Help

I'm having trouble. I have loaded my POI onto my SD card that is in my GPSr (drive G). I can see the files on my computer when connected however I don't see them in the GPSr. The files are located here: G:\garmin\poi.gpi How do I view POI files on a SD card?

When I put the POI's on the card by cutting and pasting. Was that a mistake should I have used the POI loader to place them in on the SD card? (I'm trying to load all the National Historic Places POI, a huge file.)

.

Is this two separate questions?

1. If you have a file named POI.GPI on your SD card, you GPS unit should see it automatically. Did you set your zoom level correctly according to the instructions in section 5 on this page on the wiki?
http://garmincolorado.wikispaces.com/POIs#5

(Note that you won't be able to view the contents of the POI.GPI file directly.)

2. Yes, if you copied the original data files (the CSV and/or GPX files) to the SD card, that was the wrong way. The files should be on your computer.

1. When my GPSr unit is connected to the computer I see the files on the SD card. However I don't have a POI file under "Where To".

2. I copied the original GPX files to the SD card by coping and pasting to the card.

PS

It looks like I can load to the GPSr but not the card.

.

1. Is the POI.GPI file in the POI folder on the SD card? Also, in your original post, you indicated that you saw a list, but that you didn't see them on the map. Has something changed?

2. GPX files copied to the SD card or the unit will likely be read as Waypoints/Favorites. You should remove them to keep them on your computer if you want them to be Custom POIs.

On my SD Card there is a

On my SD Card there is a FOLDER called POI.GPI. In the POI.GPI FOLDER there are 4 different FOLDERS (BMW Canada, BMW USA, National Historic Sites and US Attractions). In each of those files is a .GPX file.

I can load them and see them in I load them my my GPSr. I don't see them if they are on the SD card.

In my first post I did not know how to put in the icon.

I don't understand you second point, sorry.

.

Ok, all of your GPX files should be in a folder on your computer not on the SD card. You need to remove them from your SD card.

When you run POI Loader, you will choose the MAIN folder (it doesn't matter what that file is named) on your computer where you have placed the GPX files as the SOURCE of the data.

POI Loader will compile all the Custom POIs and their icons (if applicable) into a single file named POI.GPI on your SD card. This file should be located in a folder named POI in the GARMIN folder. (Note that this should happen automatically when you run POI Loader. You shouldn't have have to move the file.)

POI

When I run POI loader do I send the file to the GPSr or the SD card?

How many POI can I store?

Thank you so much for the help. Sorry I'm so think.

POI

Could my problem be a POI file to large? I am trying to load the National Historic Places file I downloaded from this site. Does a file like that take a very long time to load? So far it has taken 10 minutes and still nothing.

I have a 4 GB SD card.

.

Hmmm ... with that unit (since it's sort of a hybrid), I'm not 100% percent. With the auto-type units (nuvis, StreetPilots), you can send the file to either place. With the handhelds (eTrex, GPSMAP), you have to send them to the card because the unit doesn't have any space on it for them.

My thought is that with that unit, you can send them to either place. If you start to run out of space on the unit itself, then you might only send them to the card.

The number of Custom POIs that you can store is only limited by the amount of space available. Typically, you can get around 10,000 - 18,000 locations per megabyte of space.

And it's no problem for you to ask questions. You are very welcome. Hopefully, I will eventually say something that make sense. smile

Large files shouldn't be a problem. Ten minutes is too long. Something's not working correctly.

Can you detail what steps you are following?

.
Here are the basic steps that I recommend.

Download and install Garmin's POI Loader onto your computer in order to LOAD Custom POI files onto your GPS unit. Be sure that you are using the most current version.

http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/

Then create a folder on your computer for your Custom POI files.

Place ALL of them in that folder and keep them there.

Attach your GPS unit to your computer with a USB cable. (Alternately, if you have a unit that will read the Custom POIs from the SD card, attach or insert the SD card to the computer.)

Run the POI Loader program that you installed to your computer and follow the prompts.

Select your GPS unit (or SD card if applicable) as the destination for the Custom POIs in the POI Loader screen. Use the drop down arrow if necessary.

When it asks for the location of the data, Select 'Browse ...' and navigate to the appropriate folder on your computer where you placed the Custom POI files.

Select Manual or Express Mode using the drop down list. (Express Mode will set alerts based upon the data in the files. Manual Mode will allow you to set the alert information manually, if desired.)

If you select Manual instead of Express, you can set Proximity and Speed alerts for your POIs.

Follow the prompts.

Express Mode will load you files and present you with a Finish screen indicating how many POIs were loaded.

Manual Mode will present you with each POI file you have in your folder giving you the opportunity to skip loading that file, and to set or change the speed or proximity alert information. At the end Manual Mode will also present you with a Finish screen indicating how many POIs were loaded.

POI Loader will create a file in the destination you chose named POI.GPI with all your Custom POIs.

NRHP Large GPX Files

I have a 4 GB SD card.

Long loading times of the NRHP GPX files has been discussed before. See here:

Maybe that is part of the problem you are experiencing?!?

POI

Thank you all!!

I THINK with your help I figured it out. I was not giving it enough time to download. I tried loading only the midwest points and after over 20 minutes it loaded.
