What is your Nuvi missing?

Over the years, I've migrated from a Magellan receiver hooked to my old Palm m505 to a Garmin eTrex Vista to a Garmin GPSMAP60CS to the Garmin Nuvi 660.
Everytime I get a new unit, I use it for a while and think "This is much better than the last unit, but now I wish it had......"
About the only thing I wish the Nuvi 660 had was voice command capability and a better FM transmitter (or take it out and charge me less). Weather radar overlays would be pretty cool too Built in traffic receiver would be nice, I don't like having to have the cord in use to get the traffic info.
What is on your "I wish my Nuvi did this...." list?

Hmm…I wonder if the little device sold for tethering lens caps
I use my Nuvi on both of my cars and my motorcycle. There's not an easy way to tether it on the motorcycle in case it comes loose from the mount.
I was thinking that, if the adhesive is strong enough, one of the devices sold to tether a lens cap to the camera body might be a starting place for rigging a safety anchor for your Nuvi.
Am I way off with this idea or might it work?

this is true in most states. it really depends on who is pulling you over, but don't take my word for it.
Garmin (NUVI 660) Christmas list
Things I'd like to be able to do on my NUVI 660:
Create a multi-stop route.
Get a longer list when searching - cannot see Mall shops from house when doing All Category search - 2.7 miles away.
Delete the Frommers from Extras and move the Custom POI layer to where Intersections now resides. Intersections can go to second screen.
Delete an item from a custom POI list via GPSr.
Delete/edit pre-loaded POIs.
Be able to change map scale in larger increments.
Add dialable phone number to CSV import.
Include category to custom POIs to show up when searching the category in Food/Lodging section.
Be able to go full screen from Turn In split screen menu, with a toggle to current location.
Operate GPSr when USB is plugged in.

Three Things
As the happy owner of a 3 year old Garmin Quest, I was pretty dissapointed to find out that my new nuvi 650 was lacking 3 features:
1) no Elevation - more interesting than was useful
2) no Bread Crumbs - the Quest left a trail of bread crumbs showing the path of where you've been
3) does not display Degrees / Minutes / Seconds - although I can input D/M/S into my 650 to find a point of interest,... the 650 does not show me my current D/M/S.
Regarding #3... I must be missing something, because surely the 650 will display D/M/S. I suppose it's time read the manual
When all else fails-----
Read the manual !!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Have a default State, City from satellite location
Just remembered another item that would be helpful.
If it would have an option of previous "city" when you are entering a new "Address". Rather than having to re-enter the city everytime.
I totally AGREE! They tried to remedy this in the 700 line but I would love to have an option to NEVER enter the city but instead let the software read the GPS receiver data (or last known position) and automatically assume the state, city. If I need to change this default state, city there should be a new "STATE" button to click at the bottom of the screen where it now says "BACK" "MODE" "ABC" "Done" when you enter the House number.
nüvi 680, nüvi 770, Garmin Mobile XT, etc...
not a nuvi but ...
I wish my Nuvi had a calendar / scheduler / planner. It would be useful if you're taking your GPS with you on vacation.
A built in web browser with internet access would be nice. But I think that would cost too much.
The abilility to watch video / movies would be nice too.
That is why I have a Pocket PC Phone with GPS. I always have my Pocket PC Phone with me and you get a huge choice of GPS software to run on it. Garmin even had a model and it indeed with do everything you ask for; uses Windows Mobile with Outlook Mobile so you get Calendar, Inbox, Contacts, plus Windows Media Player for audio, video, mp3 etc. It will even play games.
My wish list item for my Pocket PC Phone GPS would be to have the 3megapixel camera tie to the GPS data so that anytime I took a picture the GPS data could be embedded with it. Then I would have the exact location of where I was for the photo. It would be great when uploading photos to mapping software like Google Earth.
But better yet I could take that photo and view it on my nuvi 680 and it could function like a POI for me... View the photo and there could be a Map button for me to click and it would take me to that location on the map. Sooooo maybe I want a camera on the nuvi to do all this?
nüvi 680, nüvi 770, Garmin Mobile XT, etc...
My take on what should be offered...
Most of whats on a GPS today is software driven. Its only limited by the memory and processor on the device. So what if they sold a few basic models, each having the ability to add a specific set of capabilities, but be able to purchase those features indivudually, like we can now with additional maps? In other words, upgradeable. So for example, I have Nuvi 200. I would love to add a topo map of the US and the use of cookie trails. Could that be an "option" for the Nuvi? And maybe I'd like to add the ability to route. Sure, the two together might cost me an extra $150, but its still cheaper than the higher end models with more features than I need or want.
If one needs TTS, then thats an option that could be available on the 300 series, as an MP3 player might be. But the buyer doesn't have to buy the extras. Only if they want them. Does that make sense?
I think this could be done very easily. As far as what missing on the 200, the ability to route and have multiple destinations. I think that should be standard on any automotive GPS, regardless of price.

Best post yet, Doc. And
Best post yet, Doc. And dammit Garmin! When you come out with an upgraded GPS, make it better but PRESERVE ALL OF THE FEATURES from previous units. The Street Pilot 2720 is now discontinued and the Nüvis are supposed to be a newer, better replacement, but the 2720 is a much better "hard core" GPS. My 660 was even more expensive. The "old" 2720 has the ever present North arrow, multiple destination routing, auto screen dimming, customizable fields etc. I really don't use the extra non-GPS whiz bang features so, for me, all the less GPS capable Nüvi really has over the 2720 is an internal battery and smaller size.

Wish to have in a nuvi
some traffic update thing to tell you that your going to run into a gridlock before you do. And some ghetto language, (I know it's a bit childish)
I wanna hear my GPS that normally would say. "In 200ft turn left", to "Pay attension you gonna hang a left, now turn left Mo%#$%^%^$er!" ha ha ha!
It kinda makes me sad cause I know It's never gonna happen. XD
A dash....
...when you add the telephone number to
your "favorite."
"Backward, turn backward, oh time in your flight, make me a child again, just for tonight."
I wonder why....
I just got a Nuvi 680 as my first GPS and thought it would be nice to also include a radar detector as part of it. Sure would ease the clutter on the dash. But then again maybe there are units out there that have this option?
Just want to get to where I'm goin'
My nüvi is missing the map scale
My nüvi is missing the map scale, which it had when I bought it. I wouldn't have done the update if they had informed me that I would loose that feature! If it isn't restored soon, I might be going back 3 or 4 versions to restore it.

It's not a Nuvi, but it can do what you want it to do.... Here it is.....

I wish my Nuvi....
1) had a suitable carry case for everything.
2) had a hard case for the receiver.
3) was waterproof.
4) came with the MapSource disk.
5) as many have mentioned, routing capability.
6) had the capability to customize the screens.
7) a compass with degree heading.

" I wish my Nuvi did this..."
I really like my 760 however, I wish it still had Mapsource from the PC, I wish it had customizeable fields like on my GPS V I can show the map on the left and have like speed, eta, elevation, and miles to go on the right in a column.
Great unit though.

Multi point routing
I really don't want to be without the ability to have many routes stored on my GPS or the ability to create a custom route on the computer and download it. I've had that on every GPS I'm owned (I'm on my 3rd generation). As a result, I avoided the Nuvi's even though I would like the small size - if it does not have the features I want, the package doesn't much matter.
The Nuvi 760 has the multi point routing. You cannot route on a pc and dowload but you can have 10 routes with 50 waypoints each I think. I will check my numbers.

I don't miss Garmin's new attitude
I have a whole list of features I wish my 660 had as well, and everybodys wish list is different.
I have always liked Garmin (GPS V and original Quest), and have always prefered the NavTeq maps over TeleAtlas. However, if something ever happens to my 660 or when I upgrade in the future, it will not be with a Garmin .... the lack of configuration options is embarrassing. Next time will be a TomTom where I can make map corrections (and dare I say, configure the unit the way I want to use it!)
This is the best thread ever...
I'm not sure if it was said but I would like to be able to access a list of recent searches and not have to re-enter the address in full...
Kerry in Dallas
.
Don't you have a "Recently Found" list on your GPS unit under Where to?
yep, but
what if i want the alternative address? for instance 100. w. campbell street instead of 100 e. campbell street.??? I have to re-enter the entire address and and then pick the west over the east.
I Agree
Need to add Breadcrumb availability to all routes -
Got that Garmin!!
Internet access through bluetooth to web enabled phone
I would really like the ability to see weather, traffic info, etc. through a bluetooth link to my phone - not a web browser, but more of a info link (open source) instead of the MSN link.

Next Turn
I don't know if you figured this out by now, but if you tap on the next turn( lower right ) then hit the down arrow then the up arrow, it will stay in the split screen mode. It will update as you approach each turn.
Your vehicle icon will also show up in the map screen as you approach the turn as well.
I wish all Nuvi's.........
would give you the option of selecting either a QWERTY or ABC keyboard.
So far only the more expensive models give you this feature.
Elevation/ Current Position
On my Nuvi 200W, if I tap on my vehicle icon, on the map screen, it shows me my current position and elevation.
Hope yours does that too.

Yeah, I wish that the nuvi was like the street pilot, which has a wheel. But the wheel was hard to adjust for low volume.

I really want to have a "Trip Recorder". Meaning a ticker, recording my coordinates every time interval I set (say 1 min).
If I had the API for nuvis, I could have made it myself and shared with you guys. It is such a useful tool. I wish I could program stuff not only for the PC connecting to nuvi, but the nuvi inside.

I think I've already mentioned that I wish my nuvi 650 and the entire 6XX series had track logging, similar to the 7XX series.
The more people who write Garmin the better the chances of this feature being added in a future update.

Garmin API...
The API, provided by Garmin is covering connecting to the device and the protocol to communicate with it. They are useful only when you try to connect to the device and you virtually have the chance to make your own communication software with any of the Garmin devices.
What I was talking about was some sort of API, which will allow me to add to the functionality, not only to the data of the device, but as we all know Garmin will not openly show the specifics of the devices and the OS and the platform it is using. And I think this is normal, but I just wish I can do that.
I can add to some of the devices I use (because they are open source) my own small applications, which I program myself or download from the Internet. Garmin is not open source and I don't expect them to be, but I just wish

This is my first GPS (Nuvi 650) so I can't complain much. However, I have to say having a way to create multiple waypoints would be nice. Voice activation would also be great. Finally, I wish the Nuvis came with a friction mount. In California, the GPS unit can't be mounted on the windshield since it poses a possible hazard.
My wish list ...
I wish my Nuvi 200 had a mute button on the navigation screen. And I wish it had a "Back to Where To" screen instead of having to back out of screens one at a time. Finally, the ability to adjust screen brightness by the ambient light and not a preprogrammed time of day.
"Life is a journey - enjoy the ride!" Garmin nuvi 255

For most models, if you hold the "Back" button you will get back to the Main Menu screen.
Here's my wish list -
Here's my wish list - duplicates a lot of others lists too
Really like to have:
- Volume control on map screen (Can however mute it quickly by locking the screen with the slider switch)
- Instead of one GO button have 2 or more with options to select shortest distance, fastest route etc.
- Detour options: manually select and avoid certain street (Like the TT or Magellan); Avoid current road for the next x miles
- Arrow indicators on Map screen showing the direction of upcoming turn
- Split screen when approaching a turn (True view?) Magellan style
- Current street name on the bottom (in a strange city you have no idea what street you are on unless you look around)
Nice to have:
- Speed up route simulation.
- Preplan routes and save them
- Show POIs without having to be zoomed in - every other brand shows them.
- Not having to put in City name every time one is putting in an address (maybe recently used cities list..)
- Qwerty. Quick typing al la Magellan

What I would like in my Garmin ® nüvi® 200W
Mainly the QWERTY Keypad, man it takes forever to find the letters when they are in ABC order (lol).
Also i would like to be able to touch an icon/POI on screen and have the ability to list the POI info screen w/ name, address, phone, etc.. (Like on the Magellan 2200T). Really nice feature to have when you need it !!
ability to edit/ modify the Favorites via USB cable, like we can Custom POI's
and i tried the trick of holding the back button, and Bammm it does take you back to the Main screen after about 2-3 seconds... THANKS !! learned something nü today
also i borrowed ( now own ) one of my son's stylus from his Nintendo DS, they are great for entering information in the nüvi®
Garmin nüvi® 205W
stylus pens
If your using one, you may want to put a screen protector on the screen to keep the pen from scatching it, You get some glare from the protectors but saves the screen
