Picked up a free 1450LMT

I just picked up a Nuvi 1450LMT for free that was having shutdown problems. I copied all the owners Favorites out of the 1450 to a temp.gpx and installed them on his new Nuvi 2555LMT. He was so happy with the amount of time I saved him manually re-entering them into the 2555 he told me to just keep the old one, he didn't need it any more.

I cleaned out all the junk files I could find, updated the FW and did the master reset. The errorlog was full of nothing but constant "Data Aborts" going all of the way back to last July. It seems to be working good now and the 5" screen is great. He never registered it or did map updates so I should be good to go there too. It is kind of funny to go back and use 2011.10 maps and see what the Lane Assist (and lack of JVs) was just 2 years ago. Since I use the Zumo 665 all of my experimenting with POIs has me always removing and replacing the back weather cover for access to the USB port. Even if the 1450 starts having shutdowns again it is still useful as a tester.

no map update for you

While you should be able to register it, my understanding on the map updates is that they are only available free for a limited time after the GPS receiver first sees the satellites. So if what is said elsewhere in these forums is correct, you should not be able to get map updates for a device that has been used as long ago as last July. Please let us know how this turns out.

This was done because some people would deliberately hold off a year or more and then try to register the device and claim a free map.

?

Uh, dude? It's an LMT unit. He can get maps by registering it.

Map updates

I have a 1450LMT and I expect to get free map updates for quite a while, regardless of when it first sees the satellites.

Free is

Free is ALWAYS good.

But I also understand that we here at POI FACTORY can really impress the pants off a non-techie, non-gps literate user.

Nice he gave you his old unit for free.

Nice you could help him out.

Nice you could clean up and use his old unit.

Good score.

I agree with you. Its a LMT. He get the map when he registers it. Should be no problem even if it was activated last year.
