Who Has Given Up Their Watch and Just Used Their Smartphone?

OK, admittedly, I did not give up my watch voluntarily...it is "under repair." In the meantime, I am stuck with just my smartphone to keep me informed of the time. How-some-ever, being in this predicament has made me aware that there are indeed several people who do not wear a watch and pull out their smartphone (or cellphone) when they want to check the time.

So, how many of you have taken the plunge and replaced your watch with your cell/smartphone?

Watch

Use both Watch and Smartphone

Watch

I still wear a watch. It's easier than getting the phone out of my pocket and then unlocking the screen. I have a Citizen Eco Drive watch that my wife bought me. It charges from light so there's no issue with winding or replacing the battery.

I also have a nice Roven Dino watch that a friend gave me. It's a nice watch but the clasp on the band broke. I had the band replaced and the clasp broke again after a year or so. It's a specialized band that only fits that brand of watch and the company no longer makes the band. What a crock. I now have a very nice $400 watch that doesn't clasp. I suppose I could have a leather band MADE to fit it but it would no longer be the classy looking watch it was originally meant to be. Whatever.

I take guff from my kids for wearing a watch but, as I said above, it's easier to just glance at my wrist than to get the phone out of my pocket and then unlock it and then have to put it back in my pocket. Especially if I'm driving.

My watch is analog rather than digital. If I had a digital watch I'd have to put on glasses to read it. With an analog watch I can get a good approximation of the time without glasses. smile

It's kind of funny

It's kind of funny but people years ago gave up pocket watches in favor of the convenience of a wrist watch, now people are going back to a pocket watch. i.e. cell phone.

Battery Life

bwarden wrote:

After the band wore out on my last watch, and I could no longer find replacements, I went at least a year without a watch. I tired of pulling out my phone to check the time (if the battery hadn't died), and finally picked out a Casio G-Shock Solar Wave Ceptor, and received it for Christmas. Hopefully I'll get a few decades out of this one. I'd go crazy for GPS as a secondary synchronization source, but I think that's too ambitious for wrist-sized solar power.

I have a solar powered Casio waveceptor that I really like. I did not realize it when I bought it, but the solar battery only lasts from 5 - 7 years. I had to replace mine after only 5 years. I hope you have better luck.

Everywhere I go there's clock of some sort, I stoped wearing about 1990, then I got a cheap one, had it on about 3 months & never worn it since. 2 clocks in the car, 1 on gps,the phone, the lounge wall, the stove, the saterlite top box, the radio, the microwave, the weatherstation, and there's got to be some I've missed.

Have you noticed the date and some of the different methods of writing it? My favorite is that the middle two digits are the reverse of either end.

My watch is already set for DST. They always announce it on the news so I always know when the change occurs.

I use a watch

two main reasons why I still use a watch:

my phone keeps going dead 3/4 through the day. And I'm not allowed to have a phone at work (kept in a locker). Some places freak out about security, watches are fine, phone = no way.

watch

I still use one - never have to turn it off on an airplane.

Always

A watch makes a statement. In the world of white collar business the watch you have on your wrist or chain says a great deal about you. Like it or not the symbols we use to make a statement do count when it come to money power and sex smile

"Ceterum autem censeo, Carthaginem esse delendam" “When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.”

Automatic...For the People.

Still wear a watch, an analog automatic. Two time zones plus UTC at a glance. Can't beat that on your wrist.

Does it make a statement? I guess that's for the observer to decide. For me - as a "symbol" - it basically says...I want two time zones plus UTC at a glance on my wrist.

I had a significant-other pick it up off the nightstand one morning to see what time it was. She nudged me half awake and said, "I can't read this thing. What time is it Here, Now?"

I would probably say the same picking up her smart phone. Which for her is a symbol of status.

I wear a watch every day>>>

the phone (or anything else) will never replace it...been that way for about 45 years.

Continue to wear watch

I am still addicted to looking at my wrist for time and would get a sunburn on my wrist without my watch. I wear simple water resistant Casio's. I use the stopwatch feature when cooking.

Still Using a Watch

I will never give up wearing a watch. In my opinion.....a man can never own too many watches! My collection of watches, that are worn on a regular basis, is 17. You may see anything from an old Casio G Schock to a Luminox Black Out to a Rolex on my wrist depending on the day and/or place.

Watches have always intrigued me and I am constantly looking for whatever is new or unique in the world of watches.

A Rolex Oyster I haven't worn in over 30 years. Paid $60 for it back in 1967.

Airplane use

That was the final kicker for me... I don't want to spend the minutes and battery life to boot an Android phone in airplane mode just to find out if we're there yet.

Too much hassle to pull out my phone and look at the time.

it's not just the time

A fine watch is more than a simple timekeeping device. It's a miniature mechanical marvel full of springs and gears and flywheels and escapements and counterweights and countless other parts, all working together with great precision in total harmony, relentlessly recording the never-ending passage of time. Who could give that up for a lousy old cell phone?

I guess you're right but

I've been using a digital watch for years and I doubt it has any of the parts that make it a "mechanical Marvel".

.... on a motorcycle? Although I have a GPS for the bike I only mount it when I'm going on a trip I'm not famliar with, which isn't very often.

OK so I wear my watch all the time outside the house, as already mentioned easier to glance at your wrist then pull out the phone.

Wrist Watch vs Pocket Watch

Basically this is what we're talking about. The wrist watch replaced the pocket watch maybe 100 years ago because it was more convenient. Now people want to replace the wrist watch with a pocket watch? (cell phone) I don't get it!

Lost Track of Time

Wasn't wearing my watch, so didn't realize what time it was. I stopped wearing watches when my few dozen (part collection, part statement) were taken as part of the burglar's keep more than 20 years ago. Since then, I only wear a watch periodically. Never while traveling, as it's just another thing to take off during pre-flight screenings. My phone works well enough if I need the time, but as I've been aging, most of the time - I find that I don't really care what time it is.

And now, back to your regularly scheduled forum - already in progress . . .

Still have watch

Have to keep a watch here in SUNNY Arizona, can't read the screen on the cell phone in bright sunlight.

Besides, after 60 years of wearing a watch, it becomes part of the body ... like glasses. Even after contacts, one wears sun glasses so he doesn't feel naked!
