I purchased an update for my 255W last May and was checking on my dashboard and it shows it will expire this May 1st.
Does this mean I could still download a copy of it and save it on my pc in case of something happening to my garmin?
Free of charge I hope.
Yes
and to be on the safe side, do a complete back up of your unit.

Always connect a new GPS to your computer and backup all of the files. That way if anything gets lost or corrupted you have the original files to download back into the unit it you have problems.
Whenever I update maps I create another backup and date it so that if I have to, I have all of the most recent updates and maps to put back in my unit without having to buy the map update again.
