Garmin and POI Files

I have a older nuvi 350 and came across this web site last week. Read the garmin talk items that were very old (4 years or so) on the 350 , but they helped in getting our unit updated. Now have 4 poi files on the 350 and it is working great. The only bump I had was loading the Flying J travel centers POI. Found the web site, thanks to POI factory that converted the gpx file to csv. Not sure I need a new now Have a great week

welcome to the site

Do not be afraid to ask questions.

Since your unit is older, it does have .mp3 capability which makes it easier if you want alerts.

Please do a backup of your unit right away. To learn how, see Beginners Exercise 2 - Backing Up Your GPS at http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30394.

As to GPX or CSV, the choice is yours but GPX files give more flexibility and better formatting of the information. Among the features you will be able to dial phone numbers in a listing if your unit supports bluetooth and is paired.

Good old nuvi 350

I've had a 350 for years and it's still my favorite. I don't need Bluetooth as both of our vehicles have built-in bluetooth for dialing. Since the nuvi 350 doesn't support bluetooth, you won't be able to benefit from that option in the GPX POIs. Therefore, for the nuvi350, I prefer csv files as they're much easier to modify, add to, or whatever manipulation you want to do.

One problem we discovered, way back in Feb of 2007, is several nuvi models do not correctly display line feeds in the POI's comment field. The line feeds need to be replaced with <br>
See: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/1277 and its associated links.
If you have a problem with this, email me via my contact and I'll try to help you.

Good luck.

My first nuvi was a 350. My son has it now and it is still going strong.

I'm a newbie as far as creating POI's are concerned but I have a few ideas that I'd finally like to implement. Is Turbo CC's Extra POI Editor the way to go? I don't know of any others off hand. I have a 3490LMT.

Thanks.

That said, yes, EPE is best program to edit POI files.

Back to original post, my 350 is still going strong. I prefer it because it calls out streets.

The 37xx series calls out the streets when not on a route and am quite sure that all of the newer models are doing this.

Welcome

Welcome to great site, now time for you to upgrade to a newer Garmin. I now have a 50LM and for the money, just a great unit for someone who doesn't need all the bells.

Also it has the most intuitive, clear & visible layout for a small 3.5" screen, and the easiest disconnecting car holder. My nuvi 350 is loaded with fresh Red Light Camera POIs (Thank you POI Factory!!!) and I wouldn't "update" it to anything else.

Lately I changed the internal battery in it and it's again brand new like the day I bought it back in the day.

The other difference is file

The other difference is file size which in most cases if you load the poi's on your SD card you should have plenty of room since most of use a 4gb card

Still using a Nuvi 350

I have been using a 350 for the past few years and am very satisfied with the unit. MP3 capability is very nice. I guess I won't go to another unit until my 350 dies. (Which I hope is down the road a ways.)
