City Navigator North American 2012.40 Available (Feb 7/12)

Garmin has released City Navigator North America 2012.40 today.

It appears to be a phased in update with some users seeing the availability via myMaps and others not. I couldn't see it from there or the Lifetime Update program but selecting Download from the Map Updates section of myDashboard and then picking Option 2, resulted in the new maps being downloaded to my 3790.

A tad late

Ha, you're 4 minutes 53 seconds late in being the first to report this wink

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/35696

[Update]

I also went with Option 2. Oddly, the small Installer file first downloaded was missing the .exe extension. In case others experience this issue, I found that saving the downloaded Installer to my hard drive, renaming it with the .exe, then running the renamed file started my installation. My update is underway as we speak.

No issue.

775T

Updating the 775 now, and the servers are busier than this morning. Go figure! razz Will check the JCV size after install.

Took the 3790 for a spin this aft, and no problems. Did not do a hard reset yet on it. Sat acquisition times seem faster, though.

Let's hope so, the sat. acquisition time has been terrible on the 3790 lately.

Estimated time on a 1.5GB DSL line was 5 hours. Actual time 5 hours and 23 minutes.

Don't understand why it took so long.

I downloaded yesterday late evening for my 2460LMT which included the 460MB JCV file, it took 1 Hr and 10 minutes and also selected to copy files to my PC.

I still would like to replace the D3191040A.JCV 460MB JVC file for split screen with the D3060050A.JCV 757MB full screen.
I prefer the full screen junction view, the 2460 can use both both the split screen is the default that is downloaded with the maps.

Hopefully somebody will provide a link for it.

JCV File

The jcv file supplied to the 1490 have many more views, however, they are not the photo realistic type. They are showing a left or right turn or straight ahead. They are very simple.

That is Lane Assist

I believe you may be talking about the Lane Assist which just shows the little arrows indicating which lanes are available. JVC view is much more detailed and larger which takes up about 1/2 the screen.

I wonder

I wonder if it will even fit on a Nuvi 750?

Yes, with effort

HowardZ wrote:

Yes, I updated my nuvi 750 yesterday and received the full North America 2012.40 map update and was successful even with my 200,000-ish Custom POIs, icons and sounds loaded to the internal nuvi memory.

However, I did delete all non-English voice, text and help files in the nuvi before starting the update. I see that I have 111MB free space of the nuvi's 1.85BG post 2012.40 update--not a lot of free space but probably enough to keep getting all of North America for a few more map updates before I have to settle for a smaller map.

Not that I think this matters spacewise, but my 750 has the rare 5.10 firmware.

available also for my

available also for my 2350LMT...about 40 minutes or so to download...

No, I am not talking about Lane Assist. For those who get the 44,953KB file all Junction View backgrounds are the same. No details such as overpasses, etc. are shown. If you get the small file this can be proven by setting a route to a far away city and stepping through each turn.

I hope for access to the large file.

Thanks

Loading now, will see how it works in a bit

Work Around

I had the same issue but wanted to install to my PC.

What worked for me was the following:

1. Install new version of lifetime updater:
2. Reinstall Lifetime updater - select the "Remove" option to uninstall all instances of the program.
3. Reboot your machine
4. Reinstall the lifetime updater program.
5. If you receive the device identification screen - success!

This procedure gets you back to identifying your device and allows you to download the map to the computer and the device

I simply went into control panel and uninstalled the old version and then dl'd and installed the new one. Done deal.. You are going through a lot of unnecessary steps.

No problems?

No real problems reported, so that's good...

Junction View file sizes

I found a list of JCV file sizes for the 2012.40 map.

D3060050A.JCV 757,1MB LaneAssistFull = Junction View
D3080050A.JCV 241,9MB LaneAssistMedium
D3153050A.JCV 43,9MB LaneAssist
D3191040A.JCV 449,2MB LaneAssistPortraitFull
D3192040A.JCV 153,3MB LaneAssistPortraitMedium
D3478030A.JCV 123,6MB LaneAssistTemplatePortrait

I don't have the information on which GPS model uses which JCV file. Need to research this.

thanks.

Garmin's website throttles

Garmin's website throttles their bandwidth. It can take a long time to download if you download during a busy time.

Always try to download via FTP if possible, the transport is faster than HTTP.

D3191040A.JCV (listed above) is full portrait used in a 3790. I assume it works as split screen in landscape mode.

LA Odd Errors still not fixed

Just and FYI,

The odd LA errors discussed in this thread ...

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/35007

... have still not been corrected in this map update. At least the closest one to my hoome in Western PA hasn't been corrected. It makes me wonder why we make the effort to send this info to Garmin when we don't get results, or even an acknowledgement that they looked at our email.

Now I'm hoping for the fix in 2013.10 maps. I usually have the GPS in navigation mode for any traffic alerts along the route so I get tired of seeing the same error all of the time.

That's interesting, bear007, since my simulations testing JVs with the new 2012.40 took me to an exit ramp that exhibited the effect with the past 2012.30 map. But at least for the one location tested, I now get correct turn LA directions.
