Garmin c550 Battery life.

Problem:
Dear GARMIN people, recently I had the chance to see the c550 Streetpilot on action. In fact I was very interested to get one but reading the OWNERS' MANUAL I didn't get any info about WHAT SHOULD I DO
WHEN THE LITHIUM RECHARGABLE INTERNAL BATTERY BEGINS TO DIE???. All rechargable batteries, regardless which one, loses their capabilities after year, year and a half. What should I do.??? Use it for ever with
the car adapter..??? Send it to you for a battery replacement or throw it away..??? If I had to replace the internal recharg. battery with you....How much will cost me.??? THANKS.!!!

This is the reply from garmin....

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. Nice unit & glad to help. It would be good for 10k lifecycles & would be covered under 12 month
warranty. If outside of warranty it is a flat rate of repair of $300.00

Should you have further questions please contact Garmin Product Support

So if a battery usually last 2 years like on the cell phone this means that we will have to spend $300 to keep our GPS fully working?

Thank's

Battery replacement

At least with the C550, it's within the realm of reason to replace the battery yourself - only 4 screws to undo (and a bit of soldering) wink - the Nüvi range is a different kettle of fish though! - I wonder what their policy is on those.

I didn't pay $300 (or the equiv.) for either my Streetpilot, or my Nüvi - so it doesn't look like an offer I would be taking up....

Battery replacement

My 2 cents worth.....

I feel $300 for a battery replacement would be a huge ripoff. $100 might be OK if they pay for the return shipping.

I am capable of doing the replacement myself. I can't imagine paying more than $50 for a battery that would work.

battery

If the battery is completely dead and unable to be recharged, can the unit work without it. Using the car adapter. If so, then why bother to pay the $300.00 to replace it. I was able to get a C530 for $300.00, so it would be stupid for me to get mine replaced-just go out and buy a new unit!

Related Issue

On a related issues, my C550 never indicates that it is fully charged. Has anyone else had the same issue?

This one I've heard about

Use the unit on battery power only until you get the unit telling you it's running low...then, connect it to a charging source, and let it fully recharge before using again. Consult your owner's manual for how long that should be for your unit.

Reason for their madness

That may be 'the reason for their madness'. They probably realize that 'one more unit sold' looks a lot better on their monthly quota then 'one more customer returned good' (CRG)!

When running on Bat pwr I've always had a full Battery indicator, then after awhile it goes down. When in the vehicle I reconnect to the 12v

C550 Battery Replacement

After much internet searching I finally found out how to take my Garmin C550 GPS apart. I now have it in various pieces only to find there are no part numbers on the battery or voltage numbers either. I feel I can easily replace the battery and put this thing back together, but where can I find a replacement battery??

Help

Battery Replacement

Hello,
First you need to open up your unit. There is a plastic oval ring on the front of your unit. Gently pry it open with a knive. It should have 4 or 5 attachment points that lift off. Once you have the ring out you should see 4 small phillips screws.
Remove them and you unit should open in half. Remove the battery and replace it with the new one. It's best is you solder the wires. Some models may have connector clip that makes things simple.
Ebay is a good sorce for batteries. I purchased mine there cost $17.00
Good luck

My C580 battery was never

My C580 battery was never anything I relied upon. It doesn't last very long, and even after being fully charged and sitting unused in the car for two weeks, it shows nearly empty. On the other hand, I really never use it with battery, so I am not too worried about it.

Now where and what battery to replace?

The portatronics guide is great, but it appears the battery replacement is a simple unplug/plug. From what I have read, that is not the case. Soldering is required....I am confused..

The last question, is exactly which battery to buy, and where do you get it?

My C550 is a few years old and is still working fine, however it would be nice to be prepared, ie. have a new battery ready to go. Because these things usually die when you need them the most.

nuvi battery replacement

I can't find it right now but I know there was a very good explanation with pictures on how to replace the nuvi battery on this site.

This site shows battery replacement for c550 and how to get into the nuvi 660. It does not show details on removing the battery. If you can get into it safely maybe you could figure out how to replace the battery.

C550 battery replacement

There are 4 wires that need to soldered. the others are plug and unplug. HINT The 4 wires connect to the speakers. Cut the orginal wires leaving a piece soldered to the speaker and solder the new wires to the old ones.
