Garmin 2440 works indoors?

Hi Guys,

Santa bought me a Garmin 2440.

I was amazed when I turned it on and it found my location while I was indoors.

Does the 2440 use different technology as my old nuvi unit had to outside with a full view of the Sky before it would work.

I've not used it for navigation yet, but the 2440 looks like it's going to be a great piece of kit, plus I get map updates for life.

Looking forward to your thoughts.

HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Regards,

Paul

yeap

It appears the newer models do better indoors, my 260 had to be by a window to acquire, my 2460 can do that in the center of the room.

One benefit is that I can mount the 2460 inside the center console of my Altima and works just as good as been on the windshield. http://bit.ly/oD8USu

Sure looks nice in the console, are you able to close the door to conceal it?

@paul_richardson
A little tip that you may want to use.
If your PC is close enough to a window and you have a USB chord from an older Nuvi with a mini connector on it, you can connect it to the CRADLE, then to the PC's USB.
You will now have a power source and you can play with it to your hearts content without wearing down the battery or sitting in your car making adjustments. It will also work if you have a 110V power charger.

If you are not near a window you can still play with it but you won't have a satellite signal showing your postition.

Hi Flaco, I like the look of your "install".

Is your 2460 on it's standard bracket, or do you have something fancy hidden away in your centre console?

I'd like to do something similar in my Transit.

Hi there,

I'm connected direct to the PC with the supplied Cable, is that the same?

Regards,

Paul

P.S. even 8 feet from the window I get a location fix, amazing!

My Mistake

My apologies, my mistake, the method I described will only work on units that have a mini usb connector on the cradle, I may be wrong, but I beleive your 2450 only has a micro USB connector on the GPS where the car charger plugs into. The method I described will not work, only those units with a mini usb cable connector.cradle.

Please check and see if the 2440 has a mini USB cable connector on the cradle, if it does you're ok, if it's a micro connector it won't work.

Not in the standing position, I have to let the unit screen side down in the compartment for the lid to close, my Nuvi 260 works in there too and I can leave it standing with the lid closed as shown here there is plenty of head room for the 260 http://bit.ly/pqecuF

The new Garmins must have a

The new Garmins must have a better chip because my 3490 works indoors also and it acquires the signal immediately. My 3790 takes more than a minute to acquire and it doesn't work indoors.

The Altima has the 260 inside the compartment most of the time, the power cable was routed inside the dashboard and through a hole I made in the back of that compartment with no mounting bracket.

I need to do the same with the cable of the 2460 so I can get traffic otherwise I use the cable from the 260 and the 2460 works but with no traffic.

When I took that photo it wasn't mounted on the cradle and was running on battery.

I think you may have a slight problem with the traffic reception if you bury the cable. I beleive the FM traffic receiver is that square 3" by 3/4" plastic block that is on the chord near the GPS's power connector on the cradle. If you bury it within the dash it may impede the FM signal.

The receiver is the little plastic box, but the ANTENNA is the entire double portion of the power cord. If the antenna is shielded, no reception except from a VERY STRONG signal.

I'll report back on reception once I get it done.

And here I made sure to place the little plastic box as close to the windshield as possible to get best reception thinking it was the antenna.

indoors

depending on the GPS, the building, etc, I sometimes get a fix indoors - many times though I do not. I was thinking that the next generation of GPS satellites are expected have better signal penetration - which helps in woods and city canyons.

2460--

I like the receiver in the 2460, a big improvement over the older 6xx generation. It seems to be more sensitive, updates faster, and I very rarely see the "Acquiring Satellites" banner (which I saw practically every time the 660/680 started up, for a minute or three).

It also works indoors, both in the house, and in my office.

Glad I upgraded!
