Help me choose which new model to buy

Hey Guys

Have been a member here for a while but not really active as I have been happy with my 255W I bought a few years back. I have been bitten by the upgrade buy and have bought 2 units in the last week, so not sure which to keep:

1390LMT-bought at Costco for $149
2350LMT-bought at Best Buy for $149

Read up lots on many forums, and it seems the 1390 might be the better choice? is the 2350 a newer model? I am not sure how beneficial bluetooth will be for me on the 1390 as I have a Parrot already...

Any suggestions?

Internal Memory is important

Check:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/34375

The 1390 has 2GB of memory and that's going to lead to map update issues in the future. The 2350 has 4GB and for that reason alone, I know which I'd buy of the two.

even if I buy the microSD

even if I buy the microSD card would internal memory still be an issue?

yes

But not as significant as you can put some of what's needed on the card.

what size is a typical map?

what size is a typical map? Is it even necessary to buy an SD if I stay with the 2350LMT? Read some not so good reviews on that model, but who knows, read enough you get positive and negative..

File sizes

The 2012.30 map including all of North America is about 1.6GB in size. Junction View files vary in size (model-specific for different nuvis) up to nearly 0.8GB.

If the 2350 is currently a problem-prone model, you may do well to avoid it. I'm just suggesting that the 1390 is going to present issues. "Issues" to me means that either a) the default map update will be less than ideal (e.g., Lower 48 States rather than all of North America, etc.); b) hoops will need to be jumped through to get a map update (e.g., delete unneeded voices, help files, etc.--or that some files will need to be moved to the SD card like the jcv file or the remainder of the map that wasn't installed to main memory); or c) both "a" and "b" above. I would not want to buy a nuvi that out-of-the-box is going to present these issues to me.

Doing the Garmin compare thing, the 2350 supports Routes and as reported by others has more memory. The 2350 does have a shorter battery life but I rarely use mine disconnected from a power source.

The 2350 is newer so if bluetooth doesn't matter to you then I would stick with the 2350.

Comparison ...

thanks, you guys on here

thanks, you guys on here have led me to keep the 2350 once I have it delivered, that is! Reviews seem pretty good to be honest the more I read and it seems to be updated with more features, etc.

Bluetooth really isn't important for me as I have a Parrot Handsfree already in my Jeep...

Like you say, I will likely have the unit powered on anyhow, as you need to in order to run traffic right?

Traffic

Correct, the Traffic receiver MUST ne plugged into your cigarette lighter to receive the Traffic feature. Expect to have advertisements pop up with Traffic enabled, it's the price you pay when you receive the free traffic with the unit.

The ads will disappear if you disable Traffic feature should you find them bothersome.

Hello all,

I would rather pay for Maps and Traffic then deal with the ads. Of course that's just me. I do think that the free Maps and Traffic option is great if it works for others. I am thinking about getting a new GPS (Garmin), however I have not really kept up with the latest Garmin features. I assume the option to pay for maps and traffic is still available, yes?

I really haven't started to shop as yet. I do want a high-end unit with all the "bells and whistles." Bluetooth is really not that important to me, but I'll use it if I have it available. I also want a unit with plenty of memory.

Any suggestions from the group on what unit(s) to consider?

I currently have the Nuvi 660. Love it, but I am sure it's days are numbered after some of the posts I've read lately on various forums.

It's a devious plot. As soon as you learn all of the features and become comfortable with any electronic piece of equipment, it breaks and/or becomes obsolete! LOL.

doesn't seem like the ads

doesn't seem like the ads are overly big, so not a big deal. Seeing that the receiver is part of the car charger, is it safe to assume that once the charger fuse goes, so goes the receiver? They expensive to replace?

You should be able to take it apart

Most cables that plug to the DC in a vehicle have a removable end that you can take apart and replace the fuse.
Be careful because there are some loose parts that will come out.

well you know how car chargers go? If it does, would I not need an entire new one? Even if it's the fuse?

Are you talking about the charging

cable that goes from the cigarette lighter outlet to the nuvi?

A video

Here's a video for repair of one traffic receiver--other models are similar. Note that this video shows how to repair a receiver if yours sproinged open and parts went flying everywhere, some never to be seen again. For a simple fuse replacement, just buy a fuse at at auto parts store, Radio Shack, Amazon, etc.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoGxF-1EfWk

Check with Garmin or simply check the blown fuse for a correct match (amperage/speed/etc.)

[Update] Maybe a better video

Looked at both

I just lost my 2360LMT (airport shuffling probably) and got the 3790LMT on Black Friday. I like the slim design and the enhanced 3D graphics. I was considering the 1390 instead but found this for only 90 more and wanted to try the improved graphics. The 3790 does do some weird stuff, like oddly redrawing whole screen from black to rendered ever 10 min or so. Also unlike the 2360 it really doesn't show the favorite icons located nearby your current location on any zoom setting. That is bugging me.

I had Bluetooth on the 2360LMT (essentially same as 2350) to use hands free with my iPhone, but many people complained due to background noise in my car (probably air vents). So I really don't use the BT on any model now.

great, thanks...I know these

great, thanks...I know these things rarely last a long time and I am a bit nimble to say the least when it comes to fixing anything not called a light bulb.

I drive a Jeep and needless

I drive a Jeep and needless to say from the Spring-early Fall when my top if off or soft top on a bluetooth is rather useless as nobody can hear me anyhow. That is one reason why it is not an important feature to me either...
