Garmin 1490ltm or 2360ltm

I am considering purchasing either the Garmin 1490LTM or the 2360LTM. A general comparison makes them seem very similar in most features except for the voice recognition on the 2360. However, does anyone know of the issues with each model. What would you recommend?

Memory

The 2360 has four times the internal memory of the 1490. Makes it easier to install things like the large junction view file.

More Differences

As jwillum pointed out, the 2360 has 4 times the internal memory, 8gb to the 1490's 2gb. 2gb is not enough these days since maps are ever inreasing in size.

Other difference is the 2360 has dual orientation screen, you can hold it in portrait or landscape.
However, the 1490 has a 5" screen as opposed to the 2360's 4.3".

If you have the funds you may want to consider the 2460LMT, that has voice command and a 5" screen.

You can compare the features of the three here:

As far as issues, none are perfect, they will all have some sort of flaw that may not please you.
Do a google check for reviews on the specific model and you will find what users are finding.

Say no to the 1490

I'm on my second 1490. The first was replaced by Garmin for exactl the same issues I have with the current one, that being lockups and arbitrary rebooting. On a recent 3500 mile trip it rebooted at least a dozen times and completely froze up once. Furthermore there was one area in Pennsylvania where it would not route at all. Curiously, my very old 76csx running the same version on CNNA had no problem routing in that area.

When it works, I really like the 1490 screen size and the way it works, but reliability is causing me to look at other models. Before taking another major trip, I'll probably invest in something else, probably the 2595.

Thank you for posting this, but as to the 1490, BEWARE. There are many, many posts and several threads on POI Factory about the headaches and worse with the 1490 (I should know - I own one).

If there's something similar at a comparable price, don't choose the 1490.

Here is another unhappy 1490 owner.

Price should not be your determining factor, you must be satified with your purchase.

The 1490T can certainly be good or bad...

Foolishly, I had to be an early adopter and bought my 1490T the 2nd month it was out (for an outrageous sum). That unit was so buggy with shutdown/restarts that Garmin sent me a refurb unit (warranty ran out, only recourse). Since then, I've used the refurb for several years, and have had maybe 3-4 restarts in all that time, and I use it all the time, even for short, in-town trips.

So on the whole, I would say that I'm satisfied with the 1490T model, even though I would never buy another again.

Short Cuts

The unit I have tries to use short cuts by going off the main highway using side streets. This may be due to a shorter distance but it usually takes twice as long to arrive at the destination.

To big sreen or not

The low internal memory is the worst problem with this unit. And software glitches on the early units can be a real problem. But on later models with a microSD card you must purchase and add with at least 2 or 4 gb it is a very nice unit.

I didn't know about memory when I first got one of these and paid an aggravating time price for this. My first of two of these I have owned spent a week useless locked in "Loader Loading" mode from the small available memory causing a problem in a software update.

IF you don't need bluetooth which I have to say has worked well for me go with 1450LMT. It has tens of hundreds more pre installed POIs. But if you really want the blue tooth go with the 1490 for that 5" screen. But just be prepared by getting a microSD card in advance.

Also check Craigslist once you set on a model. These things can be gotten for ~$50 or less on there today. Most of the time people ask $75-125 but if they have been listed for a while a few weeks or more, longer the better they will sell for the above stated amount. I currently have a 255WT, 750T, 1300T, 1450LMT and a 1490T. I have less than $200 in all of the 5 listed above Garmin Nuvi's I have.
