City Navigator North America NT 2011.20 Map Update Problem

I have downloaded City Navigator North America NT 2011.20 and successfully installed it on my 765T, however I can not achieve a successful install on my computer so Mapsource can also use the maps. I have run the web install routine three times. Install routine runs the full course but leaves nothing behind except empty directories where files are to go. I have ample (50gig) spare HD space so that does not appear to be the issue. I also have Mapsource 6.16.1 installed. Attempts to upgrade to version 6.16.2 have also failed in 3 attempts. Anyone else experience similar issues in past and have solutions to share that worked?
I have already sent a support request to garmin tech support.
Thanks in advance for any help.

.
Have you clicked the Advanced button? That will tell it to install to the GPS, MapSource, or both.

Yes
Yes I clicked advanced; selected option to install to computer; verified install directory was correct.

Try not verifying the install directory. It should find it itself.

When you say you're trying to update Mapsource and it also fails, I assume you open Mapsource, then use the check for updates. If this fails as well as the failure to update Mapsource and map, while the GPS does update, I suspect software or security issues. Two things I've read about here for MS Windows folks are:
-Are you running the update from an Administrator Account? If not, try the update logged into your computer as an Administrator, and
-Some reports of problems are related to MS's .NET Framework, either an old version or a faulty installation. Try a search here for .NET Framework and see if that could be an issue. Do you know which versions you have installed?
I assume the installation failure does not pop up any error messages.
See pages 6-7 for a discussion of .NET Framework issues:

Good point, Craig. I had forgotten about the .NET issue. Good catch!

Two Thought - Response
CraigW,
Regarding Mapsource - Yes I am performing the install using an admin account. Yes I have attempted the update by using Mapsource and the check for updates feature (three times). I have also since downloaded the update direct from Garmin outside of mapsource and have attempted the updgrade with the same negative results. It should be noted that I have updated mapsource twice successfully on this same computer in the past under the same log-in.
Regarding .Net framework, I know there are updates to be had and my computer has been attempting to install them automatically for the last several weeks. All attempts to updates .net have been unsuccessfull. I have attempted to force the updates earlier today with no succcess. Perhaps I need to attempt a full .net framework installation rather then just updates. I suppose it would be worth a try.

The original laptop I used to update my 1490T map also failed to update the map on the PC. I tried several times, and eventually gave up, then installed the map on a different PC. However, there was detailed information in the following file that described where the failure was:
SetupLog.txt in the following folder.
C:\Documents and Settings\your_user_name\Application Data\GARMIN\Map Update
If you find that file, there might be some useful information in it that you can provide Garmin.
Microsoft Installer and .Net Framework the Culprit??

CraigW,
I attempted a complete .net install. After all files were downloaded and file installation tried to start I received a message reporting a problem with the windows installer. So I downloaded and installed the latest version of the installer after which I was able to update .Net. Then after a reboot I attempted and was successful at upgrading MapSource. I am now in the process of downloading and upgrading maps again. In another 90 minutes or so I should know if we have succcess.

What a great result. Thanks for letting us know what worked.
What's frustrating is that the map update failure offers no obvious error messages and at least two folks here have had problems with the Garmin update due to faulty installation of or outdated Microsoft software components. I wonder if the failure to issue error messages is a problem with Garmin or with Microsoft--or both.
Garmin.
I would say the fault is with Garmin. If there are dependencies for the installer, they should be clearly stated, and the software should check for them before it proceeds.

MS Installer 4.5???
CraigW,
I attempted a complete .net install. After all files were downloaded and file installation tried to start I received a message reporting a problem with the windows installer. So I downloaded and installed the latest version of the installer after which I was able to update .Net. ....
Do you men you installed Microsoft Installer 4.5? What OS do you have, XP, which normally runs MSI 3.1?
I have had .net updates problems for awhile, I'll have to give this a try.
2011 update from amazon
I recently got the lifetime update from amazon and didn't have any problems with the code, download or update.
also silent failures with firewall or AV conflicts
I'll add a comment in case someone comes across this thread--it won't help the original poster.
I have also previously seen a Garmin update failure without error message.
In my case it appears that unlike the case documented here the problem was a conflict with either my firewall or my antivirus software. I formed the habit subsequently of turning off both when I do my Garmin map update installations.
With software compatibility issues it is always hard to know who to blame, but I agree with the above poster in faulting Garmin for not generating some sort of error message in these cases.

Similar Problem
I had a similar problem awhile back.
I did everything right except one. I didn't have service pak 3 on my XP Pro. Without SP3 you download over a Gig of files that you can do nothing with. Installed SP3 and I now have MapSource.

Do not know what version of installer other then to say it was the latest version on Microsoft's site listed as for XP. I am running XP SP3.

I should also note that in the weeks leading up to the problem that started this thread I had been receiving notices after machine startup from windows that windows had experienced errors trying to install automatic downloaded updates for .Net. After I reinstalled the installer and the .net the errors stopped.

Auslogics Disk Defrag running in auto-defrag mode

I recently had it invalidate a Garnin map file download, as I have it set to trigger an auto-defrag when system activity is low. I am guessing it thought the system was idle for long enough and started defragging the hard drive. I turned it off (shut it down and exited the program, actually) and it solved that problem. It must have been moving files while the Garmin file download was in progress. The loader yacked saying some of the downloaded map files failed verification, so I had to do it all over again.
Potentially a costly problem, with a monthly upload/download limit from an ISP.
