Garmin forum?

Thank you for the info on the Jill voice addition. Is there some forum that keeps abreast of Garmin enhancements like this and others, or do you need to just keep checking the Garmin site?

It looks like Garmin doesn't have an update feature like Microsoft's opt-in for OS updates.

I always liked Jill, thanks for the update!

Hi,
Thank you for the update.
Is it posible to update the "voice" without updating the firmware using the WebUpdater?

This new voice was issue Oct 2011

Folks, please note that this thread was started last fall and for folks who updated then, there is no new "Jill" now.

Thank you Craig!

Nice.

geezer jill

I was wondering if they would include a mature Jill voice. It may be of some appeal to the over sixty set.....just a thought.

Updates

Thanks for the info.

Karen

I use Karen because I think the pronunciations are more accurate. Karen has an update along with Jill. But I don't have a changelog. Does Garmin Express have a way to see what's new with different versions? I know I could with myGarmin.

Jack

Long ago I deleted all the voice files except for Jack. We normally just refer to the nüvi as Jack.

Karen's change log:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1135

Garmin makes it hard to find these change logs. The easiest way I find them is to do a Google search for the words (no quotes) "garmin voice version Karen" and substituting for Karen, the desired voices like Jack, Jill, Emily, Lee, David, Samantha, etc. I've also found that these searches bring up two Garmin faqs, one quite outdated and the other current, so it's wise to check both and look for the most recent update date.

Thanks for the info, looks like there's updates to several of the voices and icons.

TTS Voice Editor does work with Jill 3.20.
Version 3.0 was the only version it stopped working.
That was corrected in 3.10 and remains working with 3.20.

Regarding changing the recalculating, be advised the newer units no longer use that phrase and simply recalculate the route without notifying, it's in the firmware and can't be changed.

Curious now? Is my 3790 considered OLD now or a newer unit? It does say "recalculating".

Garmin lists the 3790T and 3790LMT as Discontinued Models now, so their three weeks wink of fame have come and gone.

Still, I'm like you. My old 2460 removed "Recalculating" so I also would have expected your 3790 to have had it removed as well.

3790 Is New

Now you have confused me by saying your 3790 still says recalculating. From everything I've read it should not be doing that. My 2460 is discontinued and older than your 3790 and it does NOT say recalculating, it merely recalculates (quickly I might add) without any notification.

If anyone ellse has a 3790 could you kindly report if your unit says recalculating. I certainly don't want to post any mis-information.

Optional Downloads

Can anyone tell me what they are and if I need to do them.

Dezl Keyboard
Map Theme
Proxmitiy Alert Text

You do not need those as those are all optional updates, but it wouldn't hurt at all if you download them.

3790 is older than 2460

Actually the 37x0 series was introduced 10 months earlier than the 24x0 series. So apparently Garmin removed the "Recalculating" prompt sometime during that time frame.

Edited 3760 Jill Voice

I am not aware of "Recalculating" ever being removed from the 37xx series.

Jill on my 3760 would still say "Recalculating" except for the modification I did so that she now says "Oh, OK".

Thank you for setting things straight. My apologies to the forum for providing incorrect information.

As you mentioned in your link, the model number naming is far from logical so that's what caused my mistake.

Branch vs Business Route

spokybob wrote:

Now that would be a nice upgrade to Jack's voice. Jack has always said Branch when it should be Business Route. I've been too lazy to fix it but would download an updated voice file if it was available. I don't think Jack has been updated since about 2008.

It's a map issue

It's a map issue more than a voice issue. Business Routes are supposed to be shown as BR - note the uppercase R while branch is abbreviated Br - with a lower case R. Like the sig line - It's not the dog, but Garmin'a fault.
