After I updated Jill voice to version 2.90 on my Nuvi 1350t, everytime when there is traffic, she says something like "P9 traffic ahead P9". Strange, I make sure that I have all other updated texts when it shows up on the webupdater.

Same here using a nuvi 3790 & Jill v2.90. I can't make head nor tail of these warnings. I may switch back to v2.60.

Today I found an updated Traffic Text file via WebUpdater. I don't have the specifics on it.

Reverted To Previous Jill

I replaced the "new" Jill with the "old" Jill from my backup files on my PC. Sometimes "new & improved," isn't. sad sad sad sad

I too had to reload my backup Jill. The new increased speech rate fix made her unable to speak properly, complete her sentences and she likes to say ,"DAH!", real loud after most directions.

No problems yet

My old Jill said a lot of things incorrectly. Now she is better. I guess becaues she was so bad (the Jill that came on my new 2450) this update seems great. I have never used anything but Jill since my first gps in 2007 and it is hard to find someone else I like. Also that is the name of my gps so I guess I will keep her.

Thanks for the heads up. I will install the new Jill tomorrow and try it out.

Switched to Jack

I have been using the Jill voice for years on various models but I have recently switched to the Jack voice and now wish I had switched sooner. To me it is easier to understand.

how about others

It may be incorrect to steer the conversation away from Jill, so I appologize if that is the case, but I was wondering if anyone had any opinion avout the voices you can buy on the internet. Worthit? not? any problems? etc...

If your GPS speaks street names, the GPS and voice use TTS (Text to Speech). As far as I know, all the aftermarket voices are not TTS.

With TTS, you hear "In point one miles, turn left on Elm Street."

Without a TTS voice, you hear "In point one miles, turn left."

Note: and if your GPS has TTS and suddenly it's stopped speaking street names, it's because you've switched to a voice on your GPS that isn't TTS. Going back to Jill/Jack/Karen/Lee/Emily/etc or whichever voices are TTS will return your spoken street names.

No - and yes

Voices available from 3rd parties are generally set phrases and will not do announcements such as street names. You would get turn right/left in 500 feet instead of turn on Main. For the occasional joke or comic relief, it's whatever floats your boat.

If you are talking about the new Jill voice, be certain you have selected the voice. If you are talking about one of the 3rd party voices, tell us which one so someone with experience with the voice can help.

jill

i have a garmin 255w i download jill from a a link here in the forum

--
in a 100 feet turn right

I think they should add a New York Nick or Nacy voice

This way when I do a voice command on my 3790LMT can it can give me attitude like "ARE YOU TALKIN TO ME!!!!!" When I cancel a trip it can say "FORGETABOUTIT" If you add a way point it can say "MAKE UP YOUR $#%@# MIND" That way I won’t feel so bad when I punch it in its screen for telling me the wrong directions. wink

Prefer previous Jill

I just downloaded new Jill the other day. I have to agree with some other posters, I prefer the old Jill. However, new Jill is all right and I won't search to get old Jill back.

Yeah I did the same for the same reason.

[spell]

I used TTSVE to make the startup say
"OK, let's get started".

Old Jill said "OK, let's get started".
New Jill says "Capital O, Capital K, let's get started".

The old voice used to say Oklahoma when it saw OK together.

Oh kay

The forum seems to have eliminated the spell tags I had around the "OK".

I ended up just editing the phrase to "Oh kay, let's get started". Just found it interesting that the new Jill recognized and vocalized the fact they were capital letters. Perhaps the "P9" being added to the traffic advisory has a similar genesis.

Really?

Not on my unit, although maybe because I'm in Canada. If I'm a bit off road, it says : OK, let's get the hell out of Dodge!"

I have a 2350LMT, installed the new Jill, voice level has decreased, GPS volume is now at 100% and needs to be louder using Jill, need to reload my Jill from backup. I sometimes use Australian English-Karen since it is much louder than the upgraded Jill.

use TTSVoiceEditor to increase the sound level

You may use TTSVoiceEditor to increase the voice level.

Just copy the Jill voice .vpm to your computer. Open it in TTSVoiceEditor, increase the voice level (not too high or it will saturate) and save it back to the same name. Then copy it back to the GPS in the Voice folder where you found it.

Thank you for the advice.

After some time

After having the new Jill for a while we have noticed that sometimes the first time she notifies us of a right turn she will say left turn then just before the turn she does it correctly by saying right. This happened twice yesterday.???

Off Guard

I hope it didn't catch you off guard. laugh out loud I'll have to listen for this in the next few days. The key part is listen. I was navigating to a regular POI this afternoon (watching for traffic on the route) while daydreaming and was looking to the right at my exit as I was going straight down the interstate. I know Jill was talking to me but now that I missed my exit I can't remember what I was daydreaming about either.

Regular everyday routes can be blaa, blaa, blaa.

Maybe Jill is having some senior moments like I often have. I have not experienced this using the new voice on any of my units.
Does this occur in the same general area or does it happen anywhere?

I would think the issue is with the unit and the location where it happened, not the Jill voice. It happens occasionally on all three of my devices. I don't think it's repeatable.

It did not repeat at the same place the next day.
While going the same way the next day Jill never told us the wrong way to turn. It is not repeatable. Maybe it is with my unit.

I'm glad. I thought I had heard something like this before but put it off to not paying close attention. I did once go back and simulate a route where I thought I heard it and it did not do it so I was sure it was me. I'm glad you and I are both okay.

TTS Speech Doctor

turboccc wrote:
lewc wrote:

I just downloaded it. I wonder if a local street will now be spoken as drive instead of doctor. I understand dr can be an abbreviation for drive or doctor but a road name that ends with dr is (almost?) always drive and not doctor.

If you want to correct the dr/doctor issue, you can use TTS_Speech_Doctor to fix it. You can find the program and documentation here:

http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/TTS_Speech_Doctor

The fix "Change "Dr" to "Drive" instead of "Doctor""
can be found in the English as it applies to all TTS voices.

This is great. Thanks for the update and added information.

I've seen this for quite a while now but do think that there was an earlier time without it. For me, this would be seen on my older nuvi 750 or 855.

All in all, "speaks street names" means you have chosen a TTS voice and "doesn't speak street names" mean you've chosen a non-TTS voice. If we're right and it is something that's been added at some point in time, it may be in response to repeated Customer Service calls to Garmin where folks called to say "I used to have my nuvi speak street names but it doesn't anymore."
