Garmin 2014.10 Install Problems Thread

Time to start a thread just dealing with install issues with Garmin devices, update programs and maps version 2014.10.

I used Garmin express today to update my year old Garmin Nuvi 3590. All things went smoothly or at least I thought. While the GPS was updated Garmin Express did not update MapSource or Base Camp. Thinking no problem I will just use Map Updater as if it reinstalls 2014.10 on the GPS no problem.

Well tying to use Map Updater it is telling me I don't have enough memory for the full North American install. No problem I just moved the map file to the 8 gig SD card and rename it. Still Map Updater says that I don't have enough memory and to get an SD card.
I have an SD card and it has over 5 gig free. Now what is up with that?

Okay I go back and try Garmin Express and this time I say just load the maps to the SD card. Okay that works or at least I though. I check to see what the size of the JCV file is and the folder is empty. Now what? Somewhere along the line the old JCV file was deleted and nothing installed for 2014.10. I need to get the link for the small version of the JCV file (I don't like the full screen version) and load it manually. Anyone have a link for that and the correct file name.

I am now in the process of updating the maps in both MapSource and Base Camp and hopefully they will work.

The one and only reason I tried Garmin Express first was to at least get things registered so that I will not get the "Updates Available" constantly when in fact all maps and firmware are up to date.

Garmin you are not even close in getting a handle on your update process.

Express not installing to the PC/Mac

Has been a well discussed issue in these forums since the last map release... as has been the solution: Use Map Update.

Upload from Garmin

I downloaded maps using Express last evening, then, leaving my Garmin plugged in, started up BaseCamp. The program (BaseCamp) automatically uploaded the maps to my computer and to BaseCamp. All works well. Using a Mac.

Used GE on an old WINXP

Used GE on an old WINXP laptop to install my last 3 map updates (2013.##) with only one issue. I can't recall which map/software update it was, but it made my 855 act strangely, lots of reboots and voice changes, etc.. I backed it off using full "N" drive backups taken before starting each update. Repeated the process, same results, so I waited for the problematic map update to be superceded by a newer one, and updated to it, and all was well in Nuvi855land.
I'm finding the same symptoms with 2014.10, so I backed it off, and I may try it again in a week or so. If that one produces the same unpredictable problems, it will be backed off and I'll wait for 2014.20.
Is there a summary of map update/software changes in any of the "My Account" stuff at Garmin's website? It would be nice to be able to review the intent and content of the updates, before choosing whether you really need or want them. I could also save some of my home ISP monthly bandwidth charges, if the changes weren't particularly vital to the operation of the Nuvi.

try

See what happens when you use MapUpdater.

Should be a clean install

I second the motion

Agreed, next time try GarminMapUpdater rather than Garmin Express.

Same problem for me and after trying the mapupdater it went

well.

Garmin MapUpdater rules...

GarminExpress, on the other hand, is like the poster child for buggy software that's released before it should be. I stay away from it at all costs.

Not a problem...

Not really a problem but I find it odd. I have two nüvi 760 units. Both have lifetime maps. I updated them both but they didn't get the same updates.

Unit #1:
CN North America NT 2014.10
[1] All

Unit #2:
CN North America NT 2014.10
[1] US & Canada

What's up with that?

I watched when doing the install and, with unit #2, US & Canada was the largest map set I was offered. I didn't pay attention with the first unit but it must have had All as an option.

I had this same result when using GE. It seems that GE downloads the same thing that's already loaded. I had to use Mapupdater to get the full map on the unit that already had US & Canada only.

A few years back some of us were able to add Mexico to our maps. Now my 885 loads all but my 255 only loads US/Can.

The Mexico add isn't available any longer.

I never use Garmin Express. I used map updater.

.

In my case, Garmin Express (Mac version) works great for my 3490LMT and 3790LMT. However, it could never complete when updating my 765T...very early on in the download process, it just quits after downloading ~5 files or so. Always in the same spot on the same file. I had to use MapUpdater on the 765T to complete the update.
