Strange Routing With Android Google Maps

On a recent trip to some smaller "towns" in the Mojave Desert area of California, I noticed that my Andriod Google maps was giving me some very strange routings. I had taken my GO930 because I wasn't sure about cell phone coverage in some of the areas I would be traveling and it chose the routes I expected. I had both (Android and GO930) running together to see if the Android would eventually chose my preferred route. However, it kept trying to take me on a longer, more circuitous route. Then I eventually lost cell phone coverage which made it a moot point.

I got this strange routing with the Andoid/Google Maps three different times to three different locations.

Only once did my GO930 give me an unexpected (and unwanted) choice. It wanted me to make a series of right turns around the block when all I had to do was make a left turn on the road I wanted. I haven't checked to see if maybe my GO930 map had a section of the road marked as one-way.

Routing between major cities and towns was as expected, but for some reason, Android/Google Maps did not do a very good job with the smaller towns.

Glad I had my GO930 with me for that trip.

Anyone else seen something like this?

Something similar

I had the native maps feature in my windows 7.5 phone do something similar to me once. I wanted me to get on the freeway, drive 1 mile then turn around and drive the 1 mile back to where I was and then drive through. Very weird one time scenario that I haven't been able to replicate at that location or any other.

I'm glad that you had a standalone gps along with you and that your trip was relatively smooth at least the getting to and fro with the gps. smile

I have had odd routings myself but I think mine was due to my 765T thinking I was on a "divided highway" (one with a median). Until the Walmart was built, this section of highway had a median. After Walmart came the median was converted into lanes - indeed two left turn lanes into the Walmart area. A half mile down the divided highway, it became a four lane highway (ie. - no median)

What my GPS would do was to ask me to go past the Walmart on my left until I reached the four lane portion and then make a U-Turn so that I could go back and turn right into the Walmart.

I have a theory that the routing algorithm use highway information from Navteq that indicates a divided highway and ASSUMES that one cannot turn left.

Just wondered if this would fit your situation.
