we are not the only ones using Google Maps

CHICAGO (KGO) -- Burglars are now using Google Maps to search for victims.

Police in the Chicago area recently arrested two suspects in a string of burglaries involving Google Maps.

Investigators believed they used the Google service to find expensive homes along highways. The burglars then allegedly use Google Earth to see the homes in 360-degree detail.

Data experts say there is a way to make your information private.

Jason Shah with Mediafly suggests using Google's "Report a problem" link at the bottom of Google Maps and Google Street View in order to contact Google.

"Over time, your image and your property will disappear from Google Maps," Shah said.

Experts in many cases say Google Maps will blur your property rather than remove it entirely.

Instead of having to opt out

Instead of having to opt out of Google Maps, they should be required to have you opt in.

Google Privacey Page

I went to the Google Maps site and plugged in my address and went to street view.

I requested my house be removed. They didn't remove my house but now you can't put the arrow directly in front of my house to see it straight on nor my vehicles license plates.

Isn't license plate blurring done automatically for all of Google Maps and therefore not need any effort on our parts to opt out?

Seems to be in my case

Mine and my neighbor's plates seem to be blurred.

Google automatically blurs license plates and faces. Of course the occasional plate/face will escape the blurring process.

new neighborhood

My neighborhood is new and my street does not show up yet. Because of this thread I am going to be watching to see what shows up. It usually takes 3 to 5 years to show up.

It's just a matter of time.
