PA is out of sight

We are going to leave for Gettysburg Sunday and I was checking on tolls to make sure I have enough in my IPass account to cover all of the tolls. I can't believe Pennsylvania, it's going to cost almost as much to go part way across PA as it will to cross Indiana and Ohio combined. It's been a few years since I've been out that way but I don't remember there being that much difference between the tolls then.

PA and tolls

Just think Fast Eddie Rendell wanted to make I-80 a toll road also.

I would set the GPS to

I would set the GPS to bypass tolls. I can't stand them, and avoid them whenever possible.

well,

Well, you can take the toll roads as far as Cleveland and then go south on I-77. Then pick up I-70, I-79 and I-68. That would avoid the PA tolls. I-68 is a beautiful drive.

If you are taking the PA turnpike on the way home, be sure to look out for the speed trap heading west, just outside of Breezewood. They sit behind a mini-hill on the right side of a long down-grade straight section. Typically I've seen 2-3 cops at a time in this area.

I-80 is free

I always take I-80 through PA, or to the NE Extension. The turnpike is a ripoff.

Ohio turnpike commision is I-80 from end to end all 241.26 miles

Ohio turnpike commision takes EZPass! However you can use your I-PASS to pay
Tollways & bridges that accept I-Pass as seen below.
Illinois Tollways
Chicago Skyway
Indiana Tollway
Ohio Turnpike
Pennsylvania Turnpike and branches
New York State Thruway
Other bridges that accept EZPass in the Northeastern US

Only car and motorcycle I-PASS transponders are compatible with the E-ZPass system, and other users with older units (eg. semi truck operators) must swap their current I-PASS transponder for a transponder compatible with both I-PASS and E-ZPass. (The reverse — use of Northeastern state E-ZPass transponders in I-PASS facilities in Illinois — was actually working as early as May 2005.)

They will both empty your bank account just as quick on the toll roads in the northeast. A list of compatible locations can be found on the ezpass IAG website.

I stand corrected ...

I think we will be going back through this area, we are talking about going back by way of Dayton, OH and stopping at the air force museum, it's been a few years since we've been there. Do these cops give any leeway or are they strict enforcement? I usually run four or five over and have never been bothered, even in Arkansas which has signs all over the place about strict enforcement. Going across I-40 one morning I was running five or six over and had a cop cruise by me without even giving me a glance.

We Know...

I live here and the only time I take the Pike is when it is absolutely necessary. Use I-80 or the other interstates.

ipass

soberbyker wrote:

We don't have ipass in PA, but it is accepted, I believe it is in Illinois. I'd have to double check, but I think someone else mentioned it. Izoom is another one.

Ohio

Ohio Interstates lately have a lot of State Trooper activity, If they pull up behind you with their lights on get ready to pay some stiff fines. They won't bother with you unless they are going to write a you a ticket, no and if's or buts.

Typically on the PA turnpike I've noticed that anything under 80 goes un-noticed, with the exception of the place i mentioned above.

I'm on I-80 in Northeast PA often, and always set the cruise to about 5 over the limit. Never had the Troopers give me a second look.

Enjoy the AF Museum. I took a road trip out there about 4 years ago (after a 20 year absence) and was amazed at how it had grown, both in quantity and quality. And the Ohio Highway Patrol ignored me at 5 over the limit as well.

55 mph zone

Not sure what part of the pike you mentioned but there is a portion the speed limit is 55, I think it's in the Bedford area. I've been from Philly to Pittsburgh a few times and there's always a cop on RADAR in that 55 zone.

how do you set it?

Do you set the cruise by the speedometer or the GPSr?
If I go by the speedo and set it for 5 miles over my car is only doing the speed limit.

I believe that Chicago is worse; every time I visit my son there, easy pass throws a party; About every ten miles there is a toll booth.

I'm not too sure about seeing cops in the Bedford area as I usually exit there, but the one place you will definitely see the cops is just east of Breezewood. Around this town it is 55 coming down the hill (from the east).

I am somewhat suprised to NOT see a cop or two on the satellite image, or street level view. I think the most I've seen at once was about 4. Two sitting in this location, one just arriving, and one already had someone pulled over down below smile

Old Man's Cave

If you are going from Gettysburg to Dayton, you might like to see Old Man's Cave near Logan, Ohio. It is out of the way from everything, but not far from your route.

It's not really much of a cave, mostly a walk along a creek in a deep ravine.

You could also stop by the flight 93 memorial, between the Somerset and Bedford exits. Not too far of the main route.

Breezwood and Bedford are fairly close to each other so it may have been Breezewood, since I don't live in the area I wasn't sure where just that each time thru that 55mph zone I've seen a police car working RADAR coming around a slight curve to the right heading west where the shoulder is fairly wide.

Yeah, the exits are close to each other.

I think the reason for the super wide shoulder is so they have a safe place to pull over several people at once... grin

I use the speedo, but I do check the GPS - usually the speedo is 1-2mph slower than the GPS.
