nuLink

I was looking to buy a Nuvi 1690 as a second unit primarly for the nuLink feature but found out that a Canadian unit will not work in the US and a US unit will not work in Canada. A rather stupid setup for a device thats made for traveling if you ask me. We live one hour from the US Canada border and make several day and weekend trips to the US. We also drive to Florida at least once a year. Does anybody know if taking out both subscritions would solve this problem or is it a hardware problem. I cant see them making a unit with two versions with different cell chips in them. I'm sure that in Canada nuLink connects via Rogers Wireless witch uses the same technology as in the US. I wonder if its a roaming issue.

That pesky border :)

In the US, nulink is on AT&T - so there is probably a roaming issue... and it's the same roaming issue you'd experience with a smartphone or other non-wifi "portable internet" device... but with those, I believe it's possible to roam the data across the border with AT&T... but you gotta pay for it... international roaming is pricey.

Just curious, do you need a passport when you enter the U.S. and return to Canda.

In hopes

In hopes of getting this thread back on track grin I have a 1695 and I seem to recall that Rogers no longer offers the nuLink service in Canada, but it still appears on the Garmin website so who knows. See https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=67219 Also I couldn't find anyone that had the 1690 in stock in Canada but I didn't look in very possible location.

AT&T is still used in the US, and I'm still able to renew my subscription on an annual basis using my US address. If I use my Canadian address I'm not even given the option to renew the initial 1 year subscription but that maybe because the unit is registered as a US unit or because it's a 1695 and not a 1690(only the 1690 appears on the Garmin site as a nuLink compatible device in Canada???).

With just the US nuLink services, using the unit in Canada is restricted to Flight Status, Standard Weather, some Google POI search facilities and Ciao (for what's that worth).

Here is some further information from the Garmin FAQ'a:

Question: Does the nuLink! Services feature on the nuvi 1690 or nuLink! 1695 work in Canada?
Answer:

The nuLink! Services on the nuvi 1690 or nuLink! 1695 will only be available in Canada if the device was purchased in Canada.

*Please note: If the device is purchased in the United States the unit will not receive signal for the nuLink! Services in Canada.

They just don't want to. Data roaming is a hassle, and made to be so providers can get paid.

With the growing smart-device market, the Nulink's time has come & gone.

What I'd like to see is a Nuvi that would connect to my smartphone via bluetooth, and an app on the phone would fetch stuff like a google search, weather, traffic, etc and pass it on to the phone.

You can still get nuLink in Canada and there are still some stores that have the 1690 in stock but getting far and few between.
If you go to the garming nuLink website and select Canada as the country it still comes up. You can activate new or renew subscription for $65.00
Also called Garmin and they confirmed it.

But is it a hardware issue or just a subscription issue? I'm sure it has to be a subscription issue but can I subscribe to both on one unit?

It could be made to work

My old TomTom One XLS connected via bluetooth to my phone and could get weather, traffic and a couple of useless things I cant remember but no Google. The problem was the roaming charges when in another country.

Not Quite Right

If you have a Nexus card, you don't need a passport, but you definitely need one or the other to get into either country.

The other alternative, is to dig a tunnel, but that's lot's of work and several years in jail, if you're caught. Odds are you'll get caught. LOL

cell - or - FM

This makes me wonder what the future is for traffic? FM or Cell?

I wonder what the new 2012 Nuvis are using?

But . . .

Nulink is pretty much dead.

No further units beyond the original models include the service, probably because of poor sales (no different than MSN Direct). Nulink isn't 'directly' specified as a model search term - they now call it 'connected services' and there remain only the 1690 and 1695.

As to roaming . . . you wouldn't want to pay for the data because the carriers are pigs about roaming charges.

nulink didn't last long

... and it's time here was negligible. It seemed like nulink was 'the thing' for about 3-4 months right after it was released and then it quickly started to wane.
