Calculating while not in route

I just used Jill yesterday for the first time since I updated to the new map.

While I have just the map up with no route, on the top bar the unit is calculating from 1 to 100% constantly. As soon as it reaches 100% it starts all over again. This is covering up where the names of the upcoming streets are.

Anyone know what is going on. Do I have something set wrong?

This does not happen when I put a route in and after I reach my destination it doesn't do the calculating till I turn it off and turn it back on????

Thanks for any help.

Hard reset?

It's an odd one to me. If my GPS was doing this, I'd try a hard reset. Something's odd since there shouldn't be "calculating" except when initially planning a route or after a "recalculating" after you choose a road not on the original route.

The other thing I'd try if the problem only occurs with Jill is to delete the Jill voice from the nuvi, then let Webupdater reload a fresh Jill voice--or of course, you could just not use Jill wink

Suggestion

Personally I would delete the Jill voice file, run WebUpdater and reload a freah new voice file along with a new firmware update and then do a hard reset.

It's worth a try.

What unit??

nuvi 2450

This is the nuvi 2450.

I have never used anything but Jill. That is what we call her.

I scheduled some routes for a couple of weeks for now. Wonder if that did it. It also has econo route on it but I can't find where to turn that off. It tells how much gas we use. There is so much more to this one than my old 750.

Thanks for any help.

Will try a hard reset. Is that the one that wips out all my data? Routes, etc...

I have 3790LMT and I have eco route, don't think that you can turn it off, just don't use it.

It's fixed

Don't know for sure how but it is working ok now.

I was checking things and saw that somehow I had 3 copies of every route I downloaded so I deleted the extras.

I also turned off traffic trends.

One of these fixed the problem.

Thanks for all the help.

I see its working OK, but

I see its working OK, but you may try down loading the maps and software updates from garmin again. If you down load them again it will over write everything, sounds to me the progams haven't loaded correctly. Be very careful to read garmins instruction carefuly at each step.

Will try that

check your current.gpx

I once had strange, unexplanable problems and in the end discovered multiple copies of all of the POIs in my Favorites too. What I actually found was the GPS was no longer using the current.gpx file but was instead using a current1.gpx file. Everytime I tried to delete items they loaded back in everytime I started the GPS again. I deleted ALL gpx files in the Garmin\GPX folder and did a hard reset. Afterwards it was again using an empty current.gpx file so I transferred my waypoints to the GPS and all was well.

The GPS caused this problem all by itself on one of its mysterious resets or shutoffs. I can guess that the GPS somehow thought it could no longer write to the current.gpx file so it opened a current1.gpx file but was able to keep reading the original file.

I would delete all gpx files, do a master reset, do webupdater and update all files and languages wanted. Then redownload the 2012.20 maps. Finally I'd transfer your Favorites bacl in.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks

I will look at the current.gpx and see if anything is there. I have reused the nuvi but didn't look to see if the routes were back. Will check. Thanks

.lpt

I have a temp.gpx, current.gpx and 3823315974.lpt file

What is the .lpt file?

Mary, Nuvi 2450, Garmin Viago, Honda Navigation, Nuvi 750 (gave to son)

More import

More importantly, what is the temp.gpx. Probably used to transfer favorites from one Nuvi to another but once you've booted the new unit and insured that your favorites are there, it's often a good idea to delete the temp.gpx folder.

Found this explanation of a .lpt file:

When a favorite is created, the address information is stored on the device in the GPX sub-directory. If it's an address, the suffix will be .gpx, if it's a lat/long, the suffix will be .lpt. The file name itself is numeric so there's no way to know which file corresponds to which favorite.

recalculating

One of the reason of constant recalculating I saw is that unit is remembering last destination it was told to navigate to. I saw a few times when I turn off gps without unit announcing "arriving to destination" that when I turned it on again it was calculating to this destination. I had to get to main screen and manually stop navigation to make gps stop navigating.

Stop button?

Good point - Is there a Stop button on the home screen? That would indicate it still had a route loaded. But if that were the case, wouldn't it be announcing turn directions?

Thought of that

I thought of that and checked the screen and the stop button was grayed out. Also when I put a new route in it didn't ask if this was a via or new route.

Didn't transfer favorites

I didn't transfer favorites from one nuvi to another but I did load favorites from Mapsoursc. Do you think it would be safe to delete the temp.gpx file?

Also, I did get lat/long for a place that the poi was incorrect and was going to replace it in Mapsource later. Do you think that is what that is and is it safe to delete that?

Thanks for all the help from all of you.

It's always

It's always safe to delete a temp.gpx file if you've rebooted the Nuvi since you placed the temp file on it.

The Nuvi will take the data in the temp.gpx file and place it in the current.gpx file every time you boot the GPS. So once it done that one time, having it continue to do it every time you start up the Nuvi is pretty much a waste of time.

Just to be sure, just move the temp.gpx file off the Nuvi until your sure you haven't lost anything.
