1490T Guide to deleting unnecessary files to free up space on your device

I wrote a guide to deleting unnecessary files to free up space. I think many people will find it helpful. I welcome your feedback and comments.

1490T Tutorial 2. Guide to deleting unnecessary files to free up space. And, notes on other files.

I have a Garmin nuvi 1490T (2GB internal memory). After deleting unnecessary files, I was able to install the "2012.20 Full Coverage of North America" map update to internal memory, and still have 96MB free. Initially I installed "2012.20 Lower 49 States" to internal memory, and installed Alaska, Canada, and Mexico as a supplemental map on my device's storage card using MapSource. While this approach takes a few more steps, it supplies the full map and when using the device I can't tell the difference.

My 1490T notes will (AFAIK) apply to nuvi 13xx/14xx (they use same firmware) and nuvi 1xxx, and parts at least to other nuvi models.

Interesting info

I deleted the language files on mine before updating to the newest map set. I don't remember at the moment how much memory I had left after the install but I did get the whole map.

Thanks Lilla!

We appreciate your guides. It would be helpful if you could submit them as FAQs on this site. Other FAQs were submitted by contributors like you. See the upper right column on this page and click on "create content" then "FAQs."

dobs108, I would be happy to do that, however, I don't yet understand the process.

I clicked on "Create Content" > FAQ (between Getting Started and Icons). I then clicked on Add a new topic to the forum (there was no option to add a post to the FAQ). However, my post wound up in the forum, not the FAQ, duplicating my other post, so I deleted it.

I hope someone can provide additional instruction on how to post to the FAQ thread.

FAQ

When you click on the "create content". on the next screen right under create content is FAQ, click the FAQ and that is the place to put it in FAQ.

Below Create Content, it

Below Create Content, it says only "Poi file".
There is no entry there for FAQ.

I am just guessing, but you may need to earn your General Maintainer badge before you can post a FAQ

I suspect that is it. I will work on that, starting with figuring out what that entails. When I accomplish that I will then add to the FAQ.

Thank you.

Deleting unnecessary files

I guess this instruction can be used for any garmin model-
750 or 760?

I haven't look at it yet, but I would hope that it also includes backing it up prior to deleting the files.

Very god FAQ. It does have doing a "backup" before as it should. There is also a FAQ by this user on how to do a backup and a few others.

to all, thanks for the feedback

to all, thanks for the many kind and encouraging comments. It makes me happy to know that my efforts are appreciated and helping.

jamstyle, regarding garmin 750/760.

One difference between our units is that my nuvi 1490T has a \.System folder, while the 7x0 and 7x5 series does not. You might want to start by printing Parts I & II of my guide, and then make note as to which folders match those on your unit and which do not. This should help clarify what applies and what doesn't.

My 1490T notes will (AFAIK) apply to nuvi 13xx/14xx (they use same firmware) and nuvi 1xxx, and parts at least to other nuvi models.

Tip on model differences, posted by SergZack: “The newer nuvis beginning with the 1xxx and including 37xx series (and likely the upcoming 2xxx series) will have a .System folder. The older units like the 7x0 and 7x5 series do not.”

Differences in models

Thanks a lot.

Lilla .. thanks! I looked at your doc and it is very useful. Keep up the good work!

Issue resolved!

UPDATE.

In my tutorials, I discovered an issue where you could not select certain embedded links. A link such as http://my.garmin.com worked properly, but a link such as click here did not, just as this one does not.

This issue has been sorted, and all tutorials/guides have been updated.

Thanks

Thanks. Great information smile smile

good point in back up before deleting

it is very good point in doing backup before deleting any files
but i will go a little more

i will backup all the files into a CD as soon as i open the box and plug into the computer. this way you have all the original files in case something happend.

i dont know if you can just copy everything back if you accidentally delete everything
but it is better to at least have something.

Excellent approach.

Everyone ought to follow this the next time they get a new GPS.
