"Near" What a valuable tool!

Hey gang! I'm back for a bit. I'm on home time and can post again!

Anyway, I'm sure this has been discussed to death and back, but man, do I love the NEAR function of my GPS. It is such a wonderful tool, I wonder why it wasn't included on the DEZL.

What I use it most for is planning my fuel stops. I pick a route, then use Near>My Current Route>Fuel stops and I can see where and how far my next fuel stop is.

You may ask why this is so vital and I would say "Good question!"

I'm only allowed to stop at company approved truck stops for fuel and this little button is a Godsend! That's why I'm curious to know why Garmin left it off of the DEZL (trucker GPS).

Without the Near button, the DEZL shows all the fuels stops, no matter the direction. This makes it very cumbersome and difficult to use.

BAD GARMIN.

near current route

You need to remember to extend your trip to the next larger city if you want to find hotels near a given city. It will not look beyond the end point for hotels.

Thanks for the info, but

Thanks for the info, but unless the truck breaks down, "knock on wood", I've little need for hotels.

I'm just curious why this feature wasn't included on the DEZL.

I think you said it

Bad, bad Garmin!

I didn't know it was left off the dezl. That makes no sense what-so-ever! Truckers are always on a route and looking to save money by not having to divert off it too far.

My zumo & nuvis all have it and I always use the "Near - Along my route" for food, gas, rest stops, etc on all my travels.

Glad your back for a while and thanks for hauling our goods to us!

I wish I could make "Near My Current Route" a permanent default setting. I almost never use anything else.

Any GPS I get better have it, or I ain't buying...

NEAR training this morning

I stopped at a Wendy's this morning in western PA for a coffee and ran into 2 guys on motorcycles programming a zumo 550 for the next leg of their trip.

They were from western Canad (I think) and had already been on their trip for 1 1/2 months and have about that much more before they're back home. They have zig-zagged all of the way across Canada west to east and are now doing the same in the U.S. from east to west.

We got to talking and one thing lead to another. Next thing you know we're back inside sitting at a table with their zumo 550, my zumo 660 and my laptop. I 1st showed him how to use the NEAR tab when navigating and his eyes light up. I then showed him all of the different custom POIs I had loaded in different categories. The rest stops (2 mile alert), food places, stores, scenic routes, Off Beat Tourist Attractions (a must for tourists) all opened his eys way wide. He looked at me and said something like, "Wow, I'm not using my GPS anywhere near its abilities!"

Ending a long story, I loaded them up some custom POIs to finish their trip and help see the U.S. Told them all about POI-Factory.com to further their training. I think we'll be seeing some new users here when they finish their ride, maybe before. I think they left happy because they kept offering to buy me breakfast or pay me which I of course declined. I was just having fun too. grin

Rath and Bear must be Eagle Scouts or were Boy Scouts, eh? wink

great feature for finding local food

I use this feature to find local places to eat when traveling. Great for those times when I don't have time to stray far from the interstate but want to avoid the franchise places.

'Near"

Thanks
Now I have to use it

That must have

My apologies!

I was trying to reply to Bear007 to say how awesome he must have felt helping 2 strangers but, somehow I screwed up replying. I can't figure it out what I did.

Sorry guys!

Thanks

It was a great!

I guess we'll see how good a POI salesman I am if they join the site one day after their great adventure.

all the time

Near is one of the more highly used features on my 850. Along the route is a wealth of information.
