Nuvi 1490

I'm having various issues and problems with my Nuvi 1490. One of the issues is that when paired to my phone, sometimes it will download my contacts but most of the time it will not.
I have the latest firmware; anybody having the same problem?

Download Contacts?

What do you mean download contacts? Mine never did that. I manually entered phone numbers for my favorites.

I just purchased a 1490LMT. There are issues transferring the phone book with both my wife's Nokia and my HTC. The phones pair OK with the 1490, but after the very first connection, the phone books do not appear. This is not an issue on our 760.

If I delet the pairing on the phone and the 1490, the phone book reappears when I re-pair the phone. Not the kind of workaround I want to live with... sad

1490

There are definitevly issues with these GPS's. I wonder if Garmin is aware and if we'll get a fix in a future firmware.
I think I made a mistake when I bought this particular unit!

Nothing New

That is nothing new for garmin units. I have a 265 that does the same thing. Sometimes you get the phone book and sometimes you don't. When I do get the phone book there are two entries for each telephone number. I wouldn't expect any change.

Nuvi 1490

I've seen the same issue. The GPS claims to only support certain phones, although it will pair with others. I have a flip phone with bluetooth. Sometimes it pairs perfectly and shows my contacts. Other times it refuses to acknowledge they exist.

same

Same here. Sometimes I get the phonebook, sometimes I don't. Haven't figured out any rhyme or reason for it. Most annoying thing is when a call comes in the 1490 screen always says "Unknown Caller", even when the caller id is on my cell phone's screen. I have not yet determined if that is the case when the phonebook IS loaded.

Contacts

Yep had same problem

I had the same problem on the Droid phone even though it showed on their approved phone list. They kept telling me a fix was in the works and that was over 6 months ago. I returned it and got a 2450LM and use my blue-tooth head set which has never ever given me any problems. I think the 1490 Series has several issues....and people keep downing the built in units which I also have because of the price and have had absolutely no problems with any function with it. I do like my 2450 also and have had no issues (knock on wood) yet..frightened to do any update from Garmin as it seems they try to fix one issue and create five others..

When the phone book loads, the contact's name is displayed if the number is for one of your contacts.

If the phone book doesn't load, you can find the actual number in the call logs. Annoying, but at least you can find it.

I agree. The 1490T is my first Garmin, and may well be my last. Besides the "technical" problems I've had, I am furious that they promoted the unit's Junction View feature at the same time they in reality made it a "lite" version without notice. FALSE ADVERTISING. BAIT AND SWITCH.

I drive in the NYC area which has plenty of crazy intersections. Yet, I only see JV come up once or twice in NYC, ever. Having just discovered the existence of the intentionally hamstrung JV file on the 1490s, I know now why!

JV different on 1490?

Does the 1490 handle Junction View differently than the 1450? Same software, so that would be strange. However, I don't recall ever seeing JV on my 1490, but definitely have on my 1450.

Apparently, the 1490's limited size internal memory is the reason Garmin only equip it with a Junction View file approximately TEN PERCENT of the size of the full, true Junction View file. Perhaps the 1450 has more internal memory than the 1490.

I paid for the Junction View feature. It figured very heavily into my GPS choice and purchase. Nohwere was I informed that my model came with approx. NINETY PERCENT of the Junction Views missing.

Junction View File

I wonder if I can delete unneeded language files from the 1490 and copy the junction view file from my 1450 to the 1490.

Backup the current JCV file before deleting it, and then try it. You can always go back.

It worked for me when I copied the file from my 885T onto my 1490. You will need to know where there is a missing JV image in order to see if the process has worked.

Mine does the same thing!!

Mine does the same thing!! Sometimes it loads the phonebook and other times, it wont! If I power off the gps(1490) and turn it back on, it "usually" loads the phonebook!?! Go figure!

Memory is the same

Its been reported that they both have the same memory size, 2GB. So if the software is the same I would think the JVC file should be the same. Maybe the 1490 has a feature or 2 that take more memory than the 1450 thus causing it to have a smaller JVC file.

Anyway, backup both units and then try replacing the JVC file from the 1490 with the one from the 1450.

Just a thought.

Will test on next trip

I will check the file sizes. If different, on my next trip I will use both units and find a junction that is missing on the 1490. Then I'll copy the file and see if the junction appears.

You could put the unit into simulation mode, and let it take the trip without putting mileage on the car.

An even faster method is to enter a destination , and once calculations are complete, click on the bar at the top of the screen showing your next turn. Then you can move down the list of upcoming turns and select each turn to see the details (distance, time to turn) and if a JV exists at this turn you will also see it.

Once you select the details of the first turn, just use the down arrow to see every other turn in just a few minutes.

On my 885T, any turns that have JV's will show the "Lane Assist" button at the bottom of the screen brightened up, and you press that button to see the JV.

On my 2460, the JV's appear automatically in a split screen. No need to push any buttons. The right side of the screen will show either a map, or a JV.

Since I returned the 1490 due to it's problems I can't say which method it uses. I suspect it will be "split screen" due to the size of the unit.

On the 1490, when viewing the turn by turn instructions, there is always a "Junction View" tab at the bottom of the screen. If there is a JV for that turn it will be lit up. Pressing it will bring up the JV full screen. If there isn't a JV for that turn, the tab is there but not lit up (which is unfortunately most often the case!)

Disable JV

I've decided to disable Junction View as I find it distracting and of limited use. The issue of the JV files and "missing" interchanges is discussed in this thread.

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/33254

There is also a link in there to another thread that explains how to download and install the full JV file.

Now to the topic of the thread, I have noticed the same issue too. I stopped using the hands free feature because I can't have the phone volume high enough to hear while having the navigation voice quiet enough for my liking.

the Garmin Bluetooth experience is a joke, at best. Garmin should stick to GPS and leave the phone stuff to peop0le that actually know what they are doing. I have tried pairing, unpairing, re-pairing...phone first, GPS first...even tried going to a witch doctor...nope Garmin bluetooth is crap...LISTENING GARMIN??? YOUR INATTENTION TO DETAIL IS SLOWLY KILLING YOUR COMPANY!

I finally gave up and use my earpiece in NJ...everywhere else I don't bother, I just answer the phone if it rings.

wouldn't it. I specifically bought the 1490 for the junction views and bluetooth and both features are absolutely near worthless.

Updates

After recent software updates, Bluetooth has improved a lot. I used to connect my phone to Bluetooth every time I got into the car. But there's no need of that anymore. I tried several phones with it and I can say that some phones are more compatible than others.

Memory and File Size

Well, the JCV file on my 1450 is only 36.6MB while on my 1490 it is 47.0MB.
Looks like I will have to download the full size version from somewhere.
My 1490 has 315MB free, so I will be able to fit the full JCV file when I get it.

You will, but just barely. My JCV file is 358 megs. Better delete some unneeded stuff first.

Full Size JCV File?

Does anyone know of a link to download the full size 358MB file? I've seen links to other smaller versions.

358 megs is too large for most sharing services...

SD Card

I don't have high speed, so would be willing to mail an SD card to someone who can put the 358MB file on it for me.

Which updates made Bluetooth better on your 1490? Are you talking about the BT workaround (phone's BT off, turn nuvi on, then turn phone's BT on after connection failed message) to get your phone book and call logs?

I'm using the latest firmware (5.30) with Bluetooth 1.73 and am having phone book issues.

I had the same issues with

I had the same issues with the phonebook loading. The problem I had was that both the phone will not pair and the phonebook doesn't always load. When I stopped using the ecoRoute feature and deleted the database file for it, the phone and phonebook began to load every time. Sometimes the phonebook loads instantly and other times it takes a few minutes.

.

Thanks @ryten! If you mean the mlg_history.db, I've tried deleting it a couple of weeks ago and the phonebook still didn't load (have been experimenting with the mileage reports in ecoRoute).

When the phonebook does load, it takes almost 3 minutes to load 150 contacts! My phone always pairs, it's just the phonebook transfer that I have issues with.

EDIT: There's a discussion about deleting the SQLite database here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/31817
