Red light cameras and left turns with arrow

Has anyone had issues with getting tickets for a left turn with an arrow when there are red light cameras.
I just got my second ticket and I was turning with the light.

The first time, I turned on the yellow arrow but on enlargement, you can see the arrow. The second time, I turned on a green arrow, you can see both sides of traffic making left hand turns, but for some reason you can't see the left turn arrow in the picture.

If I went through a red light, I would pay the ticket but I did not. I feel that this is totally unfair.

I plan to fight both tickets but I am not happy with having to take off work for a hearing.

What blocked

What blocked the left turn arrow? Or, was the signal not in the picture at all?

Sounds like you need to talk to the city engineer to see what gives. May be some error.

I thought the pictures were supposed to be looked at prior to sending them out for an actual picture.

now, i am convinced the change (hiding the arrow from picture) is for revenue.

good luck on your fight.

they send the picture and you can see it online.

What did the video show?

When you see it online it is a full-motion video. You should be able to see why you got the summons. What did the video show?

Advice

I recommend going to the intersection and watching for the turn arrow you're talking about. Perhaps it's not functioning properly. If it's not, take pictures, and bring them with as evidence.

A long while back, in Lake Zurich, Illinois, there was a tree branch blocking a right turn arrow from the red light camera. It wasn't clear how many tickets were issued for that particular mistake, but the one person that reported it, got out of the ticket.

One other thing you could do, if there is a glaring problem at that intersection, is you could notify your local newspaper. There are probably other people out there that have gotten tickets for not actually going through a red light.

should be cut and dry

Because there is a yellow light before a red, i.e. it's not green, then red, a person knows if they went through red or not. If the OP went through on red, pay it. If the OP went through on yellow, fight it. If the latter is the case, then there is a malfunction and lots of other people will be fighting it as well. There aren't two sides to the coin, it was red, or it was yellow (unless pictures are also being taken on green).

good point

It's not even worth it to take time off from work, I guess just pay it and let others fight it if there's truly a malfunction.

red light scameras

If everyone, yes everyone, whether guilty or not took their ticket to court, they would eliminate them (the cameras) due to the court system becoming overwhelmed.
Otherwise, going to court will have a d.a. making a settlement offer for much less than the original fine before court has come to order. No points!! all they want is cash.

There one thing all of u have over looked. The berdan of proff. Sorry 4 my spelling. is not on u but on then to prov that u went throu the light on a Red and not a Green. If u cannot see the Green, Yellow, or Red Arrows then there is no prof that the Arrow was red at the time u went throu the light. Thus not u win. Jolleyr

I'm not sure about every system, but most have a lovely stipulation that if you contest in court, and are found guilty, you not only pay the fine, but you pay court costs as well. It's totally stacked against the offender.

I still think it's worth observing the intersection before contesting the ticket. Here is a link to the article I mentioned previously.

After you read the article, please click on a link given in the article headed "Red light running kills" (it is right after the first two paragraphs).

I though the video was very interesting the way it interspersed opponents comments with various snippets of facts implying that cameras save lives

Nothing earth shattering but pretty effective.

Appeal

There should be a process for appealing the ticket.

Okay, let's say those crashes were from intersections with red light cameras. How did the cameras prevent the crashes? It looks like they didn't.

Wouldn't it be wonderful...

Wouldn't it be wonderful if Automated Traffic Enforcement could prevent all crashes at ATE intersections?

We both know that is not likely because there are too many drunk or distracted or just-in-a-hurry drivers who have no idea that a camera is ahead.

The best that one can hope for is to reduce crashes through behavior modification. Nothing - ATE included - is going to eliminate them.

No Evidence ??? Just a Demand for Money !!!

Sorry to hear about this. It appears they have no evidence that you ran a red light. It seems that the revenue end of the game is showing its ugly head. Unfortunately they are hoping people will just pay it rather than take off work to fight it.

I see a major lawsuit if that continues, and I'm not even psychic!

I would, as a previous post said, contact the city engineer or the outfit who controls the cameras. It wouldn't hurt to send a copy of both tickets to your local newspaper and ask them, "what's up with this?" Just to see how much they like to be 'On your side' as many of news media like to say.

Use next intersection

Go to the next intersection if turning left since you seem to have this issue with this particular light. There is no absolute answer to this problem.
There will always be ones for and against red-light cameras.
