Garmin Map Updater Application

Has anyone had any trouble installing the map updater application? I registered my 3760LMT and tried to install the application with no luck. The file will download from Garmin, it will extract the files to some unknown location, then stop. I have no idea how to find the extracted files to continue the installation, or if there is a problem with the downloaded application.

Wait for it

The install process isn't speedy. Molasses in January is almost as fast. Be prepared for the unpacking and transfer to the unit to take more than an hour.

I think it defaults to save

I think it defaults to save the files in C:\Garmin.

No files in C:\Garmin - map updater application install problem

Thanks for the response. No files found in C:Garmin. There are old files in there from where I downloaded the Garmin POI loader. The problem appears at the extraction process. No additional pop-up windows appear, the process just stops. I have tried running this over the web from Garmin, and also saving to the hard drive. Neither works. I have also disable the pop-up blocker and temporarily disabled my firewall. Not sure if there are any other ideas out there?

No prob updating 1490LMT

I installed the updater on my new 1490LMT last night. Took a while, but no problems. Updating the maps for the first time took 3+ hours, but from what I've heard that's normal; I just let it stay connected all night. Only thing I may have done differently than you might be that I didn't save the updater to my computer, but ran it from the Garmin website, instead.

Check this

Check this link, then click the Requirements tab and see if you have all that's needed. Many folks have reported failures due to a missing, outdated or corrupted Microsoft .NET Framework even though this link implies it'll be installed during the update if needed:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=33381

and

https://buy.garmin.com/support/productSupport/kanaCase.faces...

Also, for Windows folks, make sure you have Administrator rights on the computer.

Corrupt .Net Framework was the problem

CraigW

Thank you. I checked my Windows update and found a security update for .Net Framework failed. The file was corrupt and I needed to run the repair utility. For the benefit of others that may have this problem, check the following link for the fix:

http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thr...

Now that the Map Updater is working properly, I am in the long process of updating the map.

Yippee!

And thanks so much for reporting back to us for others that may/will experience this problem into the future. It's so nice to know what works.

the fix was

go to control panel click uninstall programs, find >Net framework 4 client profile file ,then click right and do repair file

More on .net Framework remedies

All,

More information on .net Framework resolution. Quite frankly I would have never guessed this would cause such a problem. The goodness in all this is that the group of folks on this site genuinely try to help provide answers. Without the dialogue on this site, I would not have looked into .Net Framework. Because of the goodness of others on this site, I was able to find a solution and resolve my problem with the updater application using the following link (also posted above):

http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/thr...

This link says to do the following (Jgermann simplified the information in the link):

go to control panel click uninstall programs, find >Net framework 4 client profile file ,then click right and do repair file

I had also submitted a trouble ticket with Garmin. Garmin's subsequent remedies for .Net Framework problems are below. I have not tried any of the information below, but it may be useful to someone.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

Why does the Garmin map update program give me an error when I run it?
If the Map Updater program fails any time before it can open the screen where you can select your GPS device, it could be due to a problem your Internet settings, a problematic Microsoft Update, or with the Microsoft .NET Framework installed on your computer. This article has been organized in four different sections. You should attempt to correct the issue following these sections in the order they are listed below.

Section 1:

If the issue is being caused by your Internet Settings you should start by adjusting them to accommodate the Garmin Map Update Application:
1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Go to the Tools menu
3. Click Internet Options
4. Click the Security tab
5. Click the green check labeled Trusted Sites
6. Click the Sites button
7. Type: *.garmin.com
8. Uncheck the box labeled Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone
9. Click the Add button
10. Click Close
11. Click the Connections tab
12. Click the LAN Settings button
13. Put a check next to Automatically detect settings
14. Uncheck all other boxes and click OK
15. Select the Programs tab and make sure that Internet Explorer is the default web browser
16. Select the Advanced tab
17. Scroll down to the Security section
18. Uncheck the box next to Check for publisher’s certificate revocation
19. Uncheck the box next to Check for server certificate revocation
20. Click the OK button
Once you have completed the steps listed above please try running the Garmin Map Update application again. If you are still having issues, please proceed to section 2.

Section 2:

If the error still occurs, this may indicate that one of the Microsoft updates that has been loaded to your computer is not compatible with the Garmin Map Update application. This is most commonly caused by Microsoft Update KB976769 v2. To resolve the conflict, try uninstalling that particular update from the computer by following these steps (This section is not necessary for Windows Vista or 7 users):
1. Go to the Start menu
2. Click Control Panel
3. Click Add or Remove Programs
4. Put a check in the box next to Show Updates at the top right
5. Scroll down to Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0
6. Under that, look for and uninstall KB976769 v2*
*Note: This update may be under Framework 2.0 or 3.5 instead. Please know that removing the KB976769 v2 update from your computer will not harm your system as it is an update to the Windows Communication Foundation, and is not a critical system update. Running the Windows Update will reinstall this update.

After this has been uninstalled, run the Garmin Map Update again. If you are still having issues or if this update was not installed on your computer, please proceed to section 3.

Section 3:
Windows 7 and Vista have the .NET Framework 3.0 or 3.5 installed by default. Some computers may not have .NET Framework installed and will give you an error when running the MapUpdater.

The errors vary, but are related to instant crashing related to the MapUpdater, and include some Windows error messages.

To enable .NET framework 3.0 on Vista and 3.5 on 7.
1. Click START
2. Click on Control Panel
3. Click on Programs
4. Click on Turn Windows features on or off
5. The Please Wait dialog may take several seconds
6. Click the box next to Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 or 3.5 if the box is cleared
7. Click OK and allow the installation to take place, (This may take up to 10 minutes)
8. Restart the computer
Try the update process again
Section 4:

If the program still will not open, or the update is not installed, a program called .NET Framework Setup Verification Tool may help determine the problem. You can find information about this tool at the following website:

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004....

You can download this application from the following location:

http://blogs.msdn.com/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer-Co...

Once you download the application, you will need to check each version of .NET Framework installed on your computer. To do this, please follow the steps below:
1. Extract the contents of the downloaded .zip file
2. Run netfx_setupverifier.exe
3. In the drop down menu select the first .NET Framework option
4. Click the Verify Now button
5. If there are no errors, it will say “Current status: Product verification succeeded!”
6. If it found an error, it will say “Error, unable to verify”
7. Repeat steps 1-4, but change the drop down to select the other versions one at a time.
If the .NET Framework Setup Verification Tool has found an issue with any of the installed versions you will need to run a repair.
To repair the .NET Framework follow these directions:
Windows Vista / 7
1. Select Windows icon in bottom left hand corner of screen
2. Select Control Panel
3. Select Programs and Features
4. Find Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile
5. Select Uninstall/Change
6. Select Repair .NET Framework 4 Client Profile to its original state
After running the repair and the Garmin Map Update still fails try to install the standalone version of the .NET Framework installation with the link below.
Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (Standalone Installer):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=...
If the standalone installation does not resolve the issue run the Garmin Map Update on another computer, or contact Microsoft for assistance in correcting the damaged installation.
