C550 and proximity alarms

I downloaded a redlight camera poi into my c550. It shows up under the Custom poi section, just fine. Now according to the manual for these to work I need to change the system settings to enable 'proximity alarms'. Also, according to the manual it states that option is only visible when a custom poi has been loaded. Well, I have it loaded and when I go to the system page it still does not show 'proximity alarms' to turn on (or off). Have I done anything wrong?

Do you mean "System Page"?

When you press the Spanner/wrench, there should be an option on that page, that says "Proximity Points" - which is where you want to go. (There is also one that says "System" - is there where you went instead?)

system page

Yes I went to the one that said 'system', and it does not show 'proximity points'. After reading your message I then went to the 'proximity points' in the drop down menu and that took me to a 'change' screen, which then takes me to 'custom poi's' which is checked. So, now I am confused. I would guess that the traffic light alert would go off (when I am in close proximity) but why doesn't the screen 'system' show 'proximity alarms' as the manual states...???
I guess the best test would be to go to the nearest red light camera mentioned in the poi and see what happens. But...I am 70 miles from the nearest one so don't really want to waste the gas to just check this out. Thanks for your help..

They've obviously moved the option in some release of the firmware or other and forgotten to update the manual. Garmin release new firmware every time the wind changes direction, so I'm not surprised! (My C510 manual is wrong as well - but I never noticed :-)

You can use the 'Simulate journey' option to test it...

  1. Go into System | GPS Mode ... select "GPS Off"
  2. "Where to?" | Custom POIs ... Pick a Redlight camera and press "Map"
  3. Click on the map, on a road a little distance away from the camera, and hit "Set Loc.".
  4. Then click somewhere else on the map, on the other side of the camera, and press "Go!"
  5. It will then say "Do you want to simulate driving this route?" - to which you answer "Yes"


You should then get an alert, just as if you were there driving for real (assuming the route it picks, takes you past the camera). BTW, this doesn't always work for 'speed' alerts...the simulation seems to run at the speed limit for that road - and you can't change it.
