Convert a .gpx to .csv?

When the POI you are interested in is a .gpx only file, and you need a .csv file.....

What do you do???

Why??

Why do you feel you need a CSV? A GPX usually contains more information and has dialable phone numbers for those with bluetooth connections to their phone.

Extra POI Editor is probably the best way to convert. Load the GPX and then tell it to save as a Garmin CSV.

Not for all...

cool
GPX will not always work for some!

I also have had problems with it but got things resolved by converting to CSV.

Example: I recently tried to install US ZIPCODES.gpx thru POI Loader and the loader stopped every-time it got to this file. When I converted it to CSV, I now have all the USA ZipCodes on my unit and can lookup a zipcode and navigate to it if needed. I have now added a feature to my unit that do not come STANDARD with Most Garmin units.

There are a lot of files out there on other sites that have problems with their formatting. Almost any glitch will cause problems with POI Loader.

Got it from another site... works very well after conversion. No ZipCodes Here.

Why would you want .csv file

Why would you want .csv file versus a .gpx unless it is a disk storage issue. A .gpx has more info than a .csv

Yes, there is a zip code file here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/20160

There really is no use for a gpx zip code file, as there are no phone numbers to use.

csv files have dialable phone nos

When I got my Motorola phone with bluetooth, and paired it with my NUVI 765T, I tried it on some of my csv files with phone no's, and it worked, hands free. The caveat is that the area code must be in parens. Just call up the POI file and it shows on the screen like a hyperlink. Press the phone no. and voila.

I just loaded the amtrak files into my 1490. I have the GPX AND the CSV. The GPX is 10 times the file size but the only extra info I see is the routes served by any given station. When viewing a csv file in excel on my pc, it seems like I can locate any given entry much easier. Any comments?

Don't sit on the dashboard or in your pocket very well.

Also try gpsbabel

Depends

It depends on what's in the file.

Using my two files as examples, the Historic Ships file is in GPX because I wanted all the extra information to show up on my GPS when I tapped on a Favorite. So, if I tapped on USS Constitution I would get a brief rundown of her history, along with address info. While I could have stuck with CSV, as I had in earlier versions of the file, I'd lose the additional information. I believe that information to be essential in order to provide that sense of history that the CSV file would be missing, and allow the user to make an informed choice about whether they wanted to see a particular ship or not.

The Canada Rest Stops file on the other hand, is in CSV. Unlike Historic Ships, there's no real need for extended information about a particular rest stop. All that's really necessary is to know what's available, if anything is available at all. For most Canada Rest Stops, it's nothing more than a turnout. The few service centers in Québec and Ontario have a little more detail, but certainly not three paragraphs worth of data.

I haven't the time or inclination to find this out, but I'm willing to lay odds that more than a few GPX files on this site are unnecessary in that format, and could have been submitted as CSV. As to GPX files from other sources, if the files from other sources are buggy, I believe running them through EPE and saving them as GPX again would correct the errors. Unless of course the file doesn't open in the first place in EPE. In that case, there is a GPX validator program, at http://www.topografix.com/gpx_validation.asp .

The gpx file size doesn't really matter because when POI Loader converts it the resulting gpi file is compressed. Someone on this site posted their findings on this a while back. If I can find the thread I'll post the link.

Thank you

When I prefer the csv. files vs. the gpx. file. For example, if I am only interested in the location and nothing else, I prefer the csv. file. I believe that of the twenty or so files that I have on my gps, only two of them are gpx. files.

I will post my findings.
The Amtrak GPX file = 107,496 installed on 1490t.
The Amtrak CSV file = 65,536 Installed on 1490t.
The installed files are approx same size except for the added info about Amtrak routes on the GPX.
Thanks

Since the GPS does not (as pointed out above by several others) use a .csv or .gpx file directly but rather converts these "input files" to a poi.gpi file, I am wondering if you mean that the two Amtrak files are really "installed" on your 1490T as opposed to your PC.

What were the sizes of the poi.gpi file for each?

this is how

Using the properties>Garmin Nuvi(j:)and noting file sizes after using poi loader in the manual mode, then reloading, skipping first one file, then the other. Easy.

The way they display is different

There are unit screen display differences between csv & gpx files, over & above phone auto-dial with gpx. See the faq http://www.poi-factory.com/node/21274

I'm curious what the zip code file does for you that you can't do with the built-in pois.

Be careful with GpsBabel and csv as input, btw. It will truncate & split your data as soon as it gets to a comma, even if it's quoted. I don't recall how it handles stuff going from gpx to csv though.

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

Try using EPE as a filter

Load it up and use "Save As" into a new file. Chances are the new .gpx file will load fine, and nothing will be lost.

If you look in the POI files sorted alphabetically you will find a 'ZipCode POI Searchable by ZipCode' in the CSV format.

"ZipCode POI Searchable by ZipCode

If anyone is interested, I have compiled a ZIP Code POI DB (CSV) that is searchable by zip code.

It is quite large (43190 zip codes, but because the state abbreviation is the first 2 letters of column 4 it would be easy to extract the state or states you want and be able to make the data suit you.

All the data was taken from the last US Census data available with this data.

It returns: State, City, TimeZone and GMT-x

So ZipCode 00612 returns "PR,Arecibo - Atlantic Time Zone GMT-4"

ZipCode 62922 returns " IL,Creal Springs - Central Time Zone GMT-6"

ZipCode 99583 returns "AK,False Pass - Alaska Time Zone GMT-9"

ZipCode 96796 returns "HI,Waimea - Hawaii-Aleutian Time Zone GMT-10"

ect, ect.....

It covers all 50 states, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Isls.

I left out Guam and all the Pacific Rim US Protectorates such as Yap, Palau and Saipan... These places may have multiple zips but only one actual location (LON-LAT)per island. So using these zips for finding a city won't work. The only exception I can find is the Wake Island is listed but that is because it does have a Honolulu HI zip code assigned to it."
