Can I use my new maps on another unit?

I know the short answer is "No", but thought maybe there is a way to do this:

I just got the latest update for my nuvi 1490, and it is on my pc, and Mapsource and MapInstall find it OK.

I just bought another gps, a nuvi 1450. Is there a way I can install updated maps without downloading them again, like get another number linked to the new unit when I register it.

Or, should I just register the new unit, and then when I am told that a map update is available for that unit, go ahead and get that update, but for the gps only: not updating Mapsource (which already has the updated map)?

If possible I would like to streamline the process of a 4 hour download.

Yes you can use the map install that you already have downloaded

Yes you can use the map install that you already have downloaded and just enter the map code that you will get after registering the new unit. I have done multiple units with just the one download.

Just select update GPS only when you have the options and in fact I think that is the default if you do not change it.

Thank you for the information!

I have updated several units

I have updated several units recently and each time the maps had to be downloaded again. The last time I noticed a check box at the bottom of the Install Options page that said to check if you have multiple units to update. Is this how everyone is doing it or has anyone experimented with this?

Yes that is what that option is intended for

Yes that is what that option is intended for is people with more than one unit to update and saves time for the person updating and a lot of server time for Garmin also.

Opposite Issue

I have the opposite issue - one GPS, but I want to install the new maps on 2 PCs. When the 2011.2 maps came out with the "new" download method, I was able to disconnect the GPS from the 2nd PC after it was detected and the maps were installed on the PC.

But it didn't work that way with the 2011.3 maps. I connected the GPS (already loaded with the 2011.3 maps from the 1st PC) to the 2nd PC, it was detected and the download/install began so I disconnected the GPS as I had done previously and the download/install continued for a while. But then, it stopped with a pop-up box asking for the GPS to be connected. So I had to re-connect the GPS before the maps had been installed on the 2nd PC and then go through the very looong process of reloading 2011.3 onto the GPS (USB 1.1).

Bummer sad

But I didn't check that check box when I updated, because I did not know I was going to get a second unit. Does that mean I will have to download again?

Or will I be able to use MapInstall and get a prompt for the appropriate information during the install attempt on the new unit?

It's really not that hard to do another download, just start it while I am watching pre-recorded football games, and check the update process about every half hour.

Good Info to know

I have multiple GPS's but only one has lifetime maps at the present time. I plan to purchase lifetime for the second one soon though so good to know only have to download once.

I believe Mapsource and Mapinstall won't install JunctionView, Lane Assist or 3D buildings on GPS units that can use them, so I'd go for a 2nd download myself.

Initial download...

If on your initial download you said to save to both your computer and GPS you will not have to download it again. When you are ready to load it to the second GPS put in the ID for the map update on the new unit and away you go....if you didn't save it on your PC crank that hummer up and start downloading again....
