Nuvi 1490 LMT disk pace only 75 MB remaining on new unit

Today, bought Nuvi 1490 LMT from Costco Canada for my wife. When I connected to my pc to check the disk space on it, I was surprised to see that there was only 69.5 MB and not 75 MB space left out of 2 GB.
I am wondering how this space will be enough for future map updates?

What is your advice?

Somewhat Agree.......but

While I certainly wish that all the products that I purchase will last for a lifetime, I do not expect that of them. I remember my experiences with computers and modems and how quickly I became hamstrung by their lack of capacity.

While I agree that technical gadgets will not be able to keep pace for a lifetime, the 1490 should last a year or two, certainly until the first quarterly update.

Remember that when you purchase a GARMIN LMT model that you are paying a little extra to get those Lifetime Maps & Traffic Updates. It would be nice if you could use them.

How do you think my friend feels when I show him how many Junction Views I have on my 8GB 2460. He goes to the store and purchases a 1490LMT which says on the box that it also has Junction Views, but when he uses it in our area he never sees any of them.

Honestly now, do you think anyone would purchase a 1490LMT if they knew about these limitations?

I know, I know, the members of this forum have found ways to get around the limitations , but only by putting our heads together and experimenting. The purchaser of a new GPS should not have to Google the web in order to get his new device to work.

I have purchased five Garmin units over the years. I liked each one so much that I didn't even consider another brand. After seeing that Garmin would sell an outdated product to the unsuspecting public has made me decide to look elsewhere for my next unit.

short sighted.

There is no doubt that Garmin was short sighted by putting only 2GB of memory in the 1xxx models. What would it have cost them? ... maybe an extra $5 to make these models with 4GB like the previous 7x5 and 8x5 series had?

That said, Garmin does offer documented support for Lifetime map updates on these units by supplying the crippled JCV file and/or the option to install the map with partial NA coverage. Granted, we don't like their solution, but it is a solution that keeps your lifetime map subscription viable. Fortunately for those who are willing to put in some additional effort, they can come to POI Factory and find a better solution.

It would be in Garmin's best interest to regain a good reputation with their loyal customers if they would improve the map installer by giving additonal install options for using the SD card to allow full map coverage and full JCV coverage. I would like to think Garmin will do this for future map updates, but I am not holding my breath.

You can use the SD Micro

You can use the SD Micro Card to put the full map on it. I have a 4 GB micro SD card and although I don't need it I can put map updates on it instead of the extra 5oo plus MB internal space that I have.

Full Junction view file

The Junction View File has been greatly reduced. (To try to make everything fit in the measly 2GB internal memory no doubt) Now I have lost all of my Junction Views in the Montreal area. Not impressed Garmin!!!

Member rame1012 was able to get the full Junction view file from Garmin. See this post: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/33977?page=2
I can confirm that it works great on my 1490LMT running off my microSD card.

Not only did I receive this email, but I received a phone call directly from the one of the VP's himself. As they say, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. This will only work for the 7x5 series though.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

We do apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. To download a larger Junction View file for your device, please visit the page linked below and follow the steps in this email.

http://download.garmin.com/support/2012_20/NA/JV/D3060030A.j...

Connect your device to your computer using the supplied USB cable
Double-click the nuvi drive that appears in My Computer or on your Mac Desktop
Double-click the Garmin folder
Double-click the JCV folder
Save the D3060030A.JCV file from the above link file to this location on the nuvi
Delete any other JCV files in this location

Once you have completed this process your device will contain the complete Junction View database.

Please note that this file will only work on the nuvi 705 series and the zumo 660/665 models, so please do not attempt to install it to any other device.

Thank you for your patience during this time. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please let us know. Thank you.

With best regards,

using maps from SD crad

Ok I have added all the maps to the SD card. How do I remove the maps from the internal memory and how do I get the system to read the maps from the SD card

Disk Space

I had the same problem. I followed Lila's article on how to get rid of unwanted files. Now I have 412MB free space. No need to touch my micro SD Card as yet.

low memory led to nightmare when I tried to update my 1490T

I got stuck in the "Loader Loading" limbo for a week until I finally downloaded the stand alone update loader program. Aparently this is a common problem on this unit because of low available memory.

This thing had no memory left when I got it. I now have learned if you want to do any updates you must install extra memory ( 2,4,8 gig card ). Also this thing is missing half the POIs stored in my 1450LMT, my guess is because the memory is so lax that they were forced to leave so many places out.

Been reading most of these comments

My wife bought me this unit for Christmas, and it had the 2012.10 maps pre-loaded, but when I tried to upgdate them to the 2012.30 version, it was out of space.

I can understand Garmin's reluctance to add more memory, and as a tech savy person, I didn't have a problem deleting files to make room, but from the point of a person who is not tech savy, and just purchased this unit, then it does not make any sense. These units should be user friendly and very easy to use. memory is cheap. I just bought an 8Gb MicroSD card for it, and it only cost $9. For a company that makes billions of dollars in profits, this makes no sense at all.

Since I have removed just about everything I can on this device, and since it is brand new and with lifetime maps and traffic, I am hoping to get as long of a life out of it as possible. I have a 4-year old 660, and it still works well, but it too is almost out of space and won't even accept the 2012.30 maps (even though I just purchased the lifetime updates a few months ago). I looking forward to using it on a long road trip, or to a palce I haven't been to before.

Now I just need to see if I can load the entire map file onto the SD card so that I can just use that instead. I also have about 150Mb of POIs that I load and I can't load any of them unless I load it onto the SD card. I just hope it isn't too slow doing that way.

Good luck to all who have recevied/bought one of these and I hope using the SD card will avoid any future problems.

Alan

Problem solved

Thanks to the many threads about the 1490 lack of memory, I now have the 2012.3 installed on the unit. I have the lower 48 & a few provinces and have 236MB free. I have only the 757MB Junction View on the SD card.
When I had all of the NA map, split between the card & the unit, the boot-up time was about 40 seconds. Now the boot-up time is 18 seconds.

Can't see my custom POIs

I just loaded the POI files that I have to the SD card, and none of them are visible. I never get the prompt to add them to the device, so they are never visible. Does anyone know of a way to force a reboot? I am reinstalling the maps to see if this will cause a reboot and for it to prompt me to add them to the device.

This shouldn't be this dificult. I agree with most that this is stupid to purchase a brand new unit and have to micky mouse around with it to get it to work. If Garmin is going to leave older models on the shelves, then at least make them workable. If not, then recall all of them and don't let anyone sell them.

I am tempted to take this back and let the retailer deal with it, but not sureif they will take it back after it has been opened. Not a very good product in the end.

Thanks

Alan

You don't get a prompt to load custom bmp icons with POI Loader. If you follow the faqs here, icons and wav audio can be added to your Custom POIs.

What may be happening is lack of zoom. See what happens if you zoom in. Do icons now appear? Someone else may remember the needed zoom level for icon visibility--if so, please post.

There's no need to reload maps or force a reboot.

If POI Loader doesn't do what you want, just run it again and it'll overwrite your previously loaded custom POI/bmp/wav file.

@abeebe

What version of poi loader are you using?
If is version 2.7.0 the poi's won't be visable because that version has a problem with writing the correct extension (gpi) to the file when you send it to the sd card.

Hook the nuvi to the computer and look at the file on the sd card. If it ends in .poi then change it to .gpi and it should be fine.

zoom

You must zoom to 200ft to see the custom poi. To determine if the custom poi are installed. Do this.
GoTo>(cursor down)>Extras>Custom POIs. There they are!

@pwohlrab

You the man (or woman)!!! That was all it took to be able to see all my POIs.

Now it is time to see if I can load the entire map onto the SD card, since I am sure I will be out of space within the next 2-3 map updates.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Alan

Glad you got it sorted out>

1490 sd card

I have owned owned a 1490 LM for about 2 years. I have not taken the time to read all the posts on this subject. But I do know this, I have run out of extra memory space. The last two timesI have tried to download maps I have had to eliminate Canada and Mexico. . I have done all the things suggested to free up more memory space. Maybe my unit was an older version when I purchased it new 2 years ago. I have to agree with other users and say it is annoying that Garmin can't add just a little more memory.

But...with the current and future map updates, your 1490 will be given the direct option to install map updates for the largest map your nuvi is entitled to receive to a SD card--and a 4 or 8GB SD card is a very cheap way to keep the 1490 and have all of North America. See footnote 2 for models covered. The nuvi 1400 series will be given this option (and can be used by you right now to install all of North America by re-installing the current 2013.30 map, or will be useful in February or thereabouts when 2013.40 comes out):

https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?...

Know, too, that Junction View (jcv) files can be stored on the SD card and for folks who receive the small default 40-50MB jcv file, it's possible to download and manually install the large photo-realistic 750-800MB jcv file to SD for many many more and better quality JVs!

I do agree with you that the older 2GB GPS models that run City Navigator North America are very space limited, especially for models that feature Junction View. You're lucky with your 1490 and I'm lucky with my 750 that the SD card installation is offered. Sadly for me, it's not currently offered for my nuvi 855. Here's a list of storage on many Garmin models:
