Please Garmin give a choice of maps.

I currently own a Nuvi 260 that came preloaded with North America, Canada and Puerto Rico; I have used the 260 in Canada, Alaska and Puerto Rico and find this the ideal map for people living in the USA.

I’m looking to get a feature that my 260 lack and that is the ability to load routes, I have my eyes on the soon to be released Nuvi 2350 but to my dismay it doesn’t come with the North America map, Garmin in their infinite wisdom decided to load this unit with Lower 48 and Mexico, are they kidding?

Sorry if what I’m about to say offends any Mexicans that visit and contribute to the POI-Factory, what was Garmin thinking when they decided to include Mexico for a unit sold in the USA, it is not safe for Mexicans to drive in Mexico without fear of being kidnapped for ransom and they want the gringos to venture south of the border with a unit recalculating while they are being chased.

For fears of being accused of bigoted comments look at this link and encourage you to Google “kidnappings in Mexico”

So how about it Garmin, give me a choice so I can get the Nuvi 2350 with North America map.

It looks

It looks like you may be mistaken about the map coverage on the 2350. According to Garmin's website it comes with maps of North America (US, Canada and Mexico). See:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=70242#inTheB...

Garmin defines North America as:

Coverage includes detailed maps for the U.S., Canada and Mexico, including Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands and the Bahamas.

There is no mention on the Garmin site of the device being only available with the Lower 48 and Mexico.

I updated a nuvi 200 once and only got the lower 48 states or Canada as a choice between the two but not both.

You are right, my mistake I swear when I saw this unit on Amazon a couple weeks ago it had mention to the "lower 48".

By the way the one I like is the 2350LMT

At any rate I'll have no problem crossing the northern border again, wished I could say the same about the southern border, I speak their language and love Mexican food but despite wanting to go there I’ll stay on this side of the border for now.

That's correct, the 200 comes with only "regional" coverage. Most Nuvi's come with North America coverage however.

Lost in Alberta

t923347 I just saw you are from Canada but doesn't show what part, the only time my Nuvi 260 let me down badly was on my way to Alaska, I got to Edmonton and the unit was lost, had me traveling down the middle of a grass field even though I was on the highway, it then led me into an unpaved back street, for a good half hour had to rely on paper map to get me back on track, funny thing on the way back it had no problem navigating Edmonton.

Anthony Henday

That empty area you traveled in Edmonton was likely the Anthony Henday extension. This is a "ring road" that extends from the eastern side of the city to the northwest. If you were coming towards Edmonton from the south, you would likely have taken the Henday to bypass the city and head north to Dawson Creek (Mile 0 on the Alaska Highway). It has been under construction for at least 10 years and the southeastern section opened a few years back - but didn't show up on my Garmin until last Fall. I travel up to Edmonton several times a year and STILL get confused when taking the Henday!

By the way, Anthony Henday was a famous explorer and HE would have been confused by the ring road! grin

There's a similar "ring road" being built around Calgary, Alberta. The Stoney Trail extension on the north side of the city has been open for a year now but was not included in the August update.

Garmin choice reflects lack of customer concern

Assuning that your original 200 came with both US and Canada, the old 200s were pretty memory starved, and as the database grew Garmin had to make a choice of what to do to get maps to fit in the limited memory space. Unfortunately, the didn't take the approach of letting the user drop the very poor internal POIs, they just give you the choice you mention.

That was really a poor choice as far as I'm concerned. My choices would be 1) let the user choose to drop the POIs. 2) let me pick from all of the states and Canadian provinces until I filled the device. I can certainly see how some U.S.A. users living near the northern boarder, as well as Canadians, would rather include parts of Canada rather than throw away states like Louisiana. And there is plenty of space after loading Canada for all of the northern states.

Sure, they might sell a few new GPSs that way, but they might also drive otherwise loyal customers to Tomtom or other manufacturers. Doing what you can for existing customers is just good business sense, and they dropped the ball here.
