traffic updates

Is the subscription to traffic updates worth the price? And does anyone know how much it costs?

Thoughts

Do you live in an area or drive through areas with Traffic coverage?

Are traffic slowdowns common and are you willing to spend a few bucks to know of them in advance to work out a detour?

For your nuvi 255W, a traffic receiver (replaces the cigarette lighter power cord you now have) is $120 straight from Garmin

and probably much cheaper from a third-party source like Amazon (about $87 with free S&H today)

The info above gets you Navteq traffic. If you want Clear Channel instead

that's a $60 one-time subscription fee in addition to the receiver cost.

traffic updates

Some of the receiver already have traffic update such as 765T, 1490T and so on..

My personal view is that if

My personal view is that if it's free, take it, but I wouldn't pay for it, even if it was only $1.00. I've used traffic here in Phoenix for 4 years with a 680, 765t, 885T and 1490T and NONE have even been very accurate or timely. Personally, I feel that traffic reports are dismal at best and pathetic at worst. Not a day goes by that there isn't construction or lane closures or restriction or detour that is not reported and I have to work my way through a maze of barracades. The most I ever get is "slow traffic 3 miles ahead" or "accident 9 miles", most of which is mot there by the time I arrive there.

I agree with you the traffic

I agree with you the traffic isn't great, but I've generally found it a good indicator. Which is all I use it for.

Long Island and New York City

Here in the suburbs of New York City and on Long Island we are in world-class traffic, and the lifetime subsciption to Total Traffic Network - Clear Channel has more than paid for itself.

We were returning to New York City one evening southbound on
I-87, the NY State Thruway, in heavy traffic at 70 mph (speed limit 55) when Jill said, "Traffic Alert! Road Closed in One Mile." In thirty seconds I was in a panic stop as traffic backed up, but because of Jill I was able to stop!

It seems the road was closed to allow a motorcade of VIPs to go downtown after the closing ceremony of the old Yankee Stadium, and this was done minutes before our arrival.

There have been several instances where Jill has saved my a**, so if Clear Channel has good coverage in your area, I recommend it!
