Nuvi 1490T

I recently purchased a 1490T to replace my Streetpilot c550. I have included a MP3 file in a folder and uploaded it using the POI Loader. The locations all are listed as expected. The MP3 file always played when I was in proximity of the location when using the c550. I can't get the 1490T to play the file. Should it be a WAV file? Or have I failed to do something correctly? The unit does sound a beep alert. Any help would be appreciated.

I just got the 1490T also.

I just got the 1490T also. From what I have read on this site, it only can use wav files as there is no MP3 player in the 1490T.

I am about to buy a 1390 or 1490. Any comments one way or the other? Thanks

I think that the only

I think that the only difference is the size of the screen. When I was looking both seemed to be the same.

1490 vs. 1390

Dudlee wrote:

Nuvi 1490 has bigger screen (5" vs. 4.3") and supports custom routes.

I've had my 1390 (5" screen) replaced three times only to end up with a 1490T finally after escalating my complatint.

Unit kept crashing and locking up. (The 1390)

1490

Thanks all.. Think I will go with the 1490

1490 a good choice

I have a 1490T and enjoy it very much. The larger screen is nice and the traffic and route capability are useful.

Took my new Nuvi on a trip. I love it and its performance. A larger screen and many new features. Too new to recommend but I am pleased so far.

nuvi 1490T sound alerts

I recently loaded a sound alert for Costco onto my 1490T Nuvi, but when I drive by Costco, nothing happens. What did I do wrong?

--
76 csx & Nuvi 1490t

Alerts

Did you set the alert distance using Poiloader in manual mode?

Other

If you selected go for Costco you should get the alert.Just navigating the coordinates should be located no more then 50 to 75 ft off the road of travel. The coordinates may be located at the building. You can improved that distance by putting TourGuide in the file name. This will give you a radius alert instead of along the road alert. The radius will depend on your distance setting used in Poiloader in manual mode.

Example
TourGuide Costco.csv
TourGuide Costco.bmp
TourGuide Costco.wav

Thanks charlesd45. I put the poiloader in manual and I can now set the distance for the alerts. I learned something new today. Thanks, again.

Let us know how it works out.If for some reason the alert does not work and you have followed instructions mention earlier in this thread. You may want to look at this.

The biggest problems with the alerts and icons not working are the files not being named the same except for extensions and having double extensions. Double-check each of them. The best way to prevent double extensions is to go to your folder options in the control panel and click view then find hide extensions for known file types and remove the check mark. Click ok.For Windows XP.

are 1490 better now ?

I had 2x1490 and 1x1390 in early 2010. I made all the necessary updates at the Garmin site, but they all retained some problems; freezing, losing the destinations, unable to recalculate, rebooting, simply not working. All three went back for refunds.

At Costco, the 1490lmt are at reduced price.
Anyone used regulary the 1490 for at least six months without problems? I'am thinking of giving a fourth chance to Garmin.

Or:
The 2360lmt supposed to be out in the third quarter 2010 then the fourth quarter and now the first quarter 2011. Does Garmin have some problem with their new GPS?

1490T

I bought mine in early October. No problems at all with the unit.

Hopefully a better 1490T by now...

Got mine just a few weeks after it was introduced a few years ago (at the then discounted price of $470). New unit had many mysterious freeze ups, shut downs, and restarts. They would only send me a refurb unit in return. But, since that time, I've had few enough problems to no longer worry about the unit itself. Now other other hand, I have not purchased any map updates or updated the firmware. So...

Re: Nuvi 1490T & Bluetooth phones.

I just thought I'd ask to see if anyone else has seen this.....

This question requires a small preface:

  • Display in "night mode".
  • Bluetooth phone paired.
  • The ability for the phone to "Voice Dial" (y'know, "Call" "Joe Schmoe")
  • From the GPS's main screen, choose "Phone", then the option for "Voice Dial"

The question is, do you get a bright white screen next or does your screen show dark?

Also, what kind of phone? (I should ask, is it "officially" supported by $G?)

I have an "unsupported" phone and was driving at night on a dark highway with the GPS in my view out the windshield when I did went to place a call like this and I almost drove off the road 'cause I was blinded by this bright white screen.

When reporting this to Garmin, the email basically said "Tough luck, you're not using a phone we approved of. Have a nice day."

Alerts

Well, I finally figured it out! The file names have to be the same, except for the extension! I tried out the alerts ant they all work OK! Thanks, again.

I had a 1490T that kept

I had a 1490T that kept crashing on me. I would eventually restart but one point died on me way out on logging roads in the bush of Quebec. Anyway I liked the unit so much that I returned it and bought the 1490LMT for $179 flat. I hope the original was just an early production unit that had some bugs that weren't yet worked out. I even sent it in for multiple services and the problem persisted.

1490T is now robust

I've had a few quirky problems over the months I've had my 1490T and occasionally one of two strange things still pop up, but these are mostly due to the Ecoroute HD accessory unit that I am also using with my 1490T. None of them are long lasting or usually anything more than something that makes you scratch your head a little bit.

I have noticed a lot more other drivers pulling up and looking at mine because the screen is so large. I don't remember anyone giving my 260 much more than a glance when that one was is everyday use...

Garmin 1490LMT trial and error.

Man oh man. Having received my Garmin for Christmas 2010. I like it alot except for the "On a need to know basis" how to use it manual.

I downloaded the manual from the Garmin site, printed it, folded to create a booklet, but that even leaves one asking questions on how to to set up the EXTRAS.

However, I see I am not alone. I must have killed hours downloading, renaming, transferring and field trials driving arounds just to find out I need wav files for sound and not mp3's, and to add certain words in the file names.

Thanks to all those that went through this before me. I just wished I came across these posts 5 hours ago. Live and learn.

I wouldn't mind paying a little more for a full fledged manual to come with the products of today.

Thank you Bob

.1490T

I get undrawn map screens often. It will eventually draw the map, or if I press the back arrow or Go button it will wake it up.

Once every few hours it will self-reboot.

Once in a while, when there is a large body of water on the screen it seems to fluster the unit into rebooting.

@perpster

Like WTF? If my nuvi did that, I'd flip. There's something wrong there, man.

Often redraws

My 1490 often redraws the screen while showing my car on an empty screen. The refresh is now quick enough (or I'm driving too fast LOL ).

The Quick Start manual is a coaster. The downloaded pdf supposed full manual is the Quick Start Manual and we are still waiting for the full manual to be published.

No more confusion!

External antenna possible?

I got my second 1490T Wednesday. #1 stopped seeing it's port and became electrically dead when it's battery died. #2 loses signal frequently (when my Kenwood KNA G610 has five bars)

The reason I have both is I just bought the Kenwood DDX 896 & 610 at the end of last year and wanted the OBD II ECO HD features the 2011 units have. I figured it was cheaper to get the 1490 and that way have the eco & gauges for much less than buying 2k worth of Kenwood units that will be obsolete in a few months.

Thanks

External antenna possible?

Well you've confused me (not hard to do) as the downloaded manual is over 60 pages long so how can you call that a quick start manual.

Connect your unit to your computer
Click on Garmin Nuvi (J:)
Click Voice
Then delete any voices you will never use.

1490T

I have had the 1490T for almost a year and love it. If you purchase the LMT version you'll get free lifetime maps and traffic. It's a nice, big screen that is very easy to see in daylight or dark. Enjoy! smile

refurbished 750

My wife has had a 750 for several years. We use it on trips, and find our favorite restaurants with it.

My sister has the 1490T with the annoying advertisements.

I figured I don't need the traffic - since it's wrong most of the time. My sister says the problem is a delay in intelligence. Something happens on the road, and the traffic service won't know about it for a while. Also the traffic problem can be gone, but the traffic service will still be reporting it. And then there is the advertisements - you can't click and have them go away like on a computer.

So, I purchased a refurbished 750 on sale at newegg.com for $67 with free shipping. The 750 had an intermittent audio problem, so I sent it back for $11 and got another 750. This second 750 works just fine and looks like new. I've downloaded the latest s/w for the GPS from garmin's website, and I'm waiting for the 2012 maps to download my free map update.

So - the short of it is - the old discontinued 750 works well and is available refurbished for a low price. You might want to consider it.

Trip Log

I like the trip log feature of 1490, which marks the roads you previously traveled. Recent software update changed thick blue line into a very thin dotted line, which looks much better and more accurate. Great to see Garmin keep improve the features of 1490.

I also get a bright white screen on my new 1490 after pressing Voice Dial paired with my HTC Touch (which is not officially supported).

FWIW, with my nuvi 760 I get a black screen with "Speak Now" in white text.

I find the 1490T's traffic accuracy very hit or miss also. I don't know if it really has any effect or not, but I seem to get better results if I select "Show Traffic Map". Maybe it forces it to poll the traffic data more often?

Hmm

While I haven't had the chance to try the Traffic on my 3790 yet, on my 775 I had to hit the Traffic Map icon to receive the updates. Otherwise, it was just the regular map with my route on it.
