Hi new guy here. I am glad I found this site, it will come in handy next summer during our motorcycle/canping trip thru the states. I have a question:: when I downloaded the rest areas poi's I did not see them on my Nuvi 855 extras. I do see the diners, drive in and dives poi's in a custom poi folder. Anyone know if the rest srea pois will just show up on the map or.....

Thanks

Tom

BACKUP

Welsome to the site. You will find it very helpful and enlightening.

but first

BACKING UP YOUR GPS

STEP 1:
Verify that Windows Explorer displays file extensions and hidden files. In any Windows Explorer window, click on (in the Menu bar) TOOLS > FOLDER OPTIONS. In the Folder Options dialog box that opens, click on the VIEW tab. In the Advanced Settings section, click on the radio button “Show hidden files and folders”. Make sure that the box beside “Hide extensions for known file types” is not checked. Click OK to exit.
STEP 2:
Attach your GPS to your computer with a USB cable. Your PC will show a dialog box for the device. Note the drive letter your PC assigned the device- shown in the upper left corner of the dialog box. One of the options will be to “Open folder to view files”. Take that option.
STEP 3:
Create a new folder on your PC. You could call it something like C:\Garmin Backup 20100605. To create a new folder in your C:\ drive, right click on a blank space in the right pane of Windows Explorer; select NEW > FOLDER and then enter the name of the folder.
STEP 4:
Go to the “Garmin …” drive (let's say it is drive G:\.) Select Drive G:\ in the left pane. Then, click in the right pane of Explorer and do a CNTL-A to select everything. Still in the right pane with everything highlighted, do a CNTL-C to copy everything.
STEP 5:
Navigate back to the folder C:\Garmin Backup 20100605. Click in the right pane and CNTL-V to paste everything.

Now, whatever might happen later during new map updates, etc, you have a backup.

Have you run POI Loader

[quote=sgttj when I downloaded the rest areas poi's I did not see them on my Nuvi 855 extras. Tom

Downloading rest areas from POI Factory does not get them into your 855. To get them to the 855, you must run POI Loader (get it here: http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/.)

Note that POI Loader creates a file on your 855 in the path (drive):\Garmin\POI which is named poi.gpi.

EVERYTIME you run POI Loader, it creates a new poi.gpi. If the POI files loaded by a previous execution of POI Loader are not within the folder which POI Loader uses as its "source", then those POI files will no longer exist on the GPS.

To overcome this "feature", you can use Windows Explorer to rename the just created poi.gpi file to a name of your choice - like "restareas loaded on 20100726.gpi". If one adopts this technique, then one has to remember which POI files are specifically named on the GPS and take this into account when reloading certain POI files.

Hope this helps.

Again, welcome

One more point

Let me start by welcoming you to the site.

There is one more thing to remember about loading POI you have to remember with the 8XX series. You have to reboot the unit before the just loaded POI will show.

There are 2 ways to reboot, one is to pop the battery and then put it back in. The second is to turn it on, let it start to fire up then hold the power switch to the left for about 15 seconds. This also forces a reboot. Reboots are always recognizable because of the fat white line that marches across the screen under the Garmin name.

I do not have an 800 series, so I wondered if the manual for this series would give instructions about a required reset (holding the power key to the left for a minimum of 8 seconds). Since the manual did not mention this as a requirement, I was wondering if others had found that this was required.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question. It seems the reboot worked; took the battery out put it back in and all is well. Thanks again, what a great site.

It probably wouldn't hurt

Part of the reason for the needed reboot on the 8XX series is they don't "turn off" when you power down. They go into a sleep mode so the updates aren't applied until you force the reload. My old 200 always did a reboot, but then again it is a 2X0 series first purchased in 07.

I own a 885T for several years and I have yet needed to reboot the unit after loading POI. (I have for system updates).

When I first read that a reboot (and I assume that a master reset is what is meant) was required, I look on the Garmin site and in the manual and could not find anything that seemed to support this. Since I have a 765T it did not apply to me and i wondered why the 885T would be different.

Other owners of 885T - what is your experience?

The 8x0/8x5 series do not turn off when using the power switch...they go into sleep mode. To power cycle these units, you either need to remove the battery or slide/hold the power switch to the ON position for ~15 seconds.

All other nuvis will power off when the power switch is pressed/slid to ON position.

Understand the sleep part

Understand the sleep part, what I am trying to understand is what is meant by "reboot".

Garmin gives this procedure for a a "master reset"
"To perform a master reset on a nuvi 800 or 805 series device:

1. Remove battery from nuvi
2. Place battery back into nuvi
3. Touch-and-hold the bottom right corner of the touch screen when a progress bar appears
4. Release the screen when "Do you really want to erase all user data?" appears
5. Touch "Yes"

The device will now be reset.
*Note: The master reset will erase all user data including saved favorites."

The manual has a section about Resetting the nuvi. This indicates one should slide the power key to the left and hold it for a minimum 8 seconds.

Sorry if I am beating a dead horse but I am trying to understand the terms used. I fear that someone misunderstand what to do when.

Thanks for bearing with me.

look at it this way

A master reset resets all systems, files, and storage to factory default. A reboot is what happens when you restart the unit such as powering on without wiping data. You can master reset your phone and wipe everything or you can power down and then restart. The 8 series do not power down, they hibernate so they have to be rebooted or cold started.

reboot is defined as ..

I am concluding that when people say to "reboot" a nuvi/streetpilot/zumo, what they mean is to turn it off and turn it back on.

Is that what is meant by a reboot?

On the 8x5 units, the power switch does not actually kill power to the unit. To do that, one must remove and then replace the battery. Thus, for an 8x5 unit, a reboot requires removing and replace the battery.

Have I got that right?

.

Yes, that is correct. It's a power cycle as I already mentioned in my other post.

Power cycle: cut/apply power to the unit's circuitry.

Slide/press power switch to ON position and release:
nuvi *all except 8x0/8x5 series*: power cycle on/off
nuvi 8x0/8x5: puts unit into sleep mode/remove unit from sleep mode.

To power cycle the nuvi 8x0/8x5 series: remove battery & reinsert -or- slide/hold power switch in the ON position for ~15 seconds
