Micro USB Connection For Mass Storage Mode

So I am still using a 3490 (for now) and if I connect the unit to the PC via a regular USB-A Male to Micro USB Male, the 3490 goes into PC mode fine and I can read the files on the unit. However, I was connecting the 3490 to my Android tablet (while on the go) to try and edit some of the files on the 3490. I can do this only if I connect the above cable along with a USB-A female to Micro USB. So in other words:

Garmin 3490 > Micro USB Male to USB-A Female

connected to

USB-Male to Micro USB Male > Android tablet

This works fine. However, I decided to eliminate some cables and found (on eBay) a 9-inch Micro USB Male to Micro USB Male and nada! So I'm wondering if the pinouts would be different (or perhaps I got a bum cable).

Any electronic techies out there that can confirm this?

Thanks.

Edits from an Android Device?

Aren't all the editable files .GPX files? Editing XML is very tedious. For what purpose would you edit files with an Android device? Is there Android software to manage a Garmin GPS?

I almost never take my PC (a large laptop) on trips, my little tablet will do all I want away from home and I have a nice file editor app installed.
I have some micro USB cables that only have power connections, they came as charging cords for a couple of other items, I put a marker tape on them!

Hmm...

That may be it...charging only. The Garmin never goes into PC connected mode when using this cable. Only when using the above scenario. Basically, I use the "My Files" and show hidden files on the tablet so I can erase a few files within the .System folder. I like to start with a clean slate and get rid of prior searches and it's the only way to do it (the unit won't let you as they want to data mine your searches on the next sync). There are a bunch of SQLite DB's which need to be cleared and the tablet is great for on the go but couldn't get the single cable to work. Anyway, you may be right as far as a charge only style pinout?!?!
