Suddenly cannot turn on Garmin 760

My dad just asked for my help regarding a problem he encountered with his Nuvi 760. He used it to find a restaurant. The unit worked fine getting him there. But after dinner, the unit refused to start for the return trip.

I have his Nuvi 760, and I can confirm that it will not turn on. There is no repsonse when I attempted to turn it on. Black screen, no sound.

It does however, boot into USB mode when connected to PC.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

charge the GPS

sometimes its because the GPS run out of power, charge for a while and try power on again.

.

Let it charge on the USB overnight, and then try again. Most folks have resolved the issue with this technique.

Thanks for your quick replies.

I will try your suggestions.

my 750 does this too...

After being unattended for a few weeks - but an extended charge brings it fully back to life. Should be fine. Good luck!

Just Charge It

If left in the car and used frequently, my nuvi 760 needs charging every several weeks. It is not enough to just be connected to the cigarette lighter cable.

It can take six hours to charge with a USB cable connected to a PC, and the PC must not go into sleep mode. I have used a cell phone charger with a mini-USB connector, and that takes about four hours.

The 760 has been rock-solid, and I am sure yours just needs charging.

Did you try reset,,Hold the on switch to the right for 10 seconds and see if that work, my 760 did that and the trouble shooting on garmin said to do that and it worked.

Yup - the battery is dead. I have a Nuvi 855, and although turned off, the battery will die in 2 days of inactivity (not sure what is draining the battery, but left out of the Nuvi, it maintains full charge). I have an AC charger left over from a Nuvi 350 that I use to charge it. After charging, I pull the battery until I use the device again. Not sure, but don't believe the 760 has a removeable battery.

dead nuvi 760

Had the same issue. Somehow the power drained out of the unit completely. I was on a boat and charging it from the 220 plug. Left it charging for 12 hours and it was fine.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!

I left the unit charging overnight via USB port. In the morning it was able to boot up normally. So looks like dead battery is the problem.

The strange part is that my dad always use the vehicle power cord. So even if the battery is dead, the unit should have powered up because is was connected to the cigarette lighter power cable.

At any rate, I am glad it is nothing more serious than a dead battery.

Thanks, everybody, for all you help!

Glad to hear you got it resolved! Thanks for letting us know what the solution was.

Keep an eye on it. That

Keep an eye on it. That matches the symptoms I had with my 760 when the battery finally decided to die permanently. As long as it holds a charge when you take it off the USB or 12V cable, you'll be fine, but if if starts to drop again quickly, the battery's probably near the end of it's life. They're fairly easy to replace though, so that's the cheap solution if you find yourself in that fix.

Sounds like there is a problem with the cradle or the cigarette lighter plug. Check the fuse in the tip of the plug, be careful with all the parts and pieces that jump out when you unscrew the tip. The easiest way to tell if everything is working is to check the battery icon. If the icon shows up then you don't have external power to the unit.

Thanks!

I will check that.
