Caution Alert about Garmin Updates

Greeting to All;

I had checked previous post to try and prevent starting a new post that had already been addressed. If per chance I missed it, I apologize beforehand for doing so. This just happened to me and I hope I can give you a heads up in time so this doesn't happen to any of you.

This alert is about getting any updates for your Garmin units; Do not use any other Web Browser other than; Internet Explorer. to; get, download and install updates to your units, please.
I had recently changed my default Web Browser from, 'Internet Explorer' to 'Google Chrome', for two reasons. A- I've recently been reading too much about security issues with 'Internet Explorer' in which I had gotten concerned about Web safety. I receive daily newsletters from several reliable sites that watch and look for any security issues that could cause harm to anyone's computers. It seems like having a full time job for us to insure or computers are safe. Almost to point we are doing that more and instead of just being relaxed having worry free fun. B- It is been said that 'Google Chrome' is not only safer but also far faster. I can vouch for it being faster when using either router Ethernet connection or wireless.
What I did not know until it was too late is that Gamin's 'My Account'...My Dashboard..for updates, does not support the use of other Web Browser's other than 'Internet Explorer' and I believe one other. I was surprised that there was no warning whatsoever about this anywhere at the site with my unit, Nuvi 1350, connected and downloaded plus install new available software update. As soon as it stated finalizing install in which we disconnect unit from computer and let it do a restart then check to insure update was successful, my unit froze up like an ice cube.
I went through 3 days of major frustration trying to solve the problem and fix it. It was when I attempted to e-mail support that I discovered that I cannot even e-mail support unless I am using Internet Explorer. When I changed my default browser back to Internet Explore I was able to contact support and learned all about this. The sad part though is that I cannot fix my unit because of what I had done. I have to send my unit to them for fix or replace. Thank goodness I am still under warranty or I would a more unhappy camper.
I hope I have helped in preventing this from happening to any of you in time. I also hope I explained it well enough for everyone to easily understand. If I haven't feel free to contact me or reply to post.
May everyone's day be better than your yesterday;
heywelder/Craig

A GPS can take you where You want to go but never where you WANT to be.

FIREFOX!!!!

I'm forced to use IE at work on the network but, for ALL of my personal computing (including this bootleg laptop at work razz ) I use Firefox exclusively.

I agree. I was a Netscape user for many years until I went to IE 4 due to the demise of Netscape. I jumped ship to Firefox 2.0 after becoming frustrated with IE's staleness at the time and I haven't looked back. Add to the AdBlock+, which is probably the most useful of all the add ons, and you have a real winner. I may give Google Chrome a spin someday but its support for add on's pales to Firefox.

IE does not work on MAC

So I use FF. I have tried Chrome, not impressed, and cannot stand Safari. I do prefer IE when using Windows.

As far as security issues with IE, I have read several articles in many computing magazines on Browser Security. For the most part they say at any given time all the browsers have security holes and a lot of times they all will have the same hole at the same time. The reason you here about IE is because they are the biggest baddest on the block, just like virus's.

.

FireFox, zero issues. It seems others agree. mrgreen

I'm a happy Firefox user and

I'm a happy Firefox user and have been for years. I've recently been using Chrome to see what all the fuss is about (it being great...). It is a little faster than Firefox I hate to say and I have had no problems with the Garmin update with it either. I wonder if the OP has some settings that need to be changed.

I've read that Firefox 4 is to be faster and more like Chrome in some respects. I can't wait.

Firefox ...Never leave home without it!

I've used Firefox from its inception and never looked back to any other browser.

As previously stated, the add-on's are superior, especially the Ad Block. With virtually every website now bombarding us with adverts and pop-ups, Ad Block makes short shrift of these annoyances.

Thanks All

Thank you for your replies. I was surprised for my problems because I do have the IE extension installed in Chrome.
I had mentally forgotten about Fire Fox even though I have kept up with articles written about it. A long back on another computer I had built I used and liked Fire Fox and can't say why I hadn't loaded it on any of my other puters since. Per your recommendations and since it works well with Garmin I think I'll give it go on this puter. If I were to change the others I would have a couple very confused ladies to explain why I change the computers. They are not fond of change as I have learned the hard way.
I am happy though that in the replies I had not read that someone else had got burnt using Chrome to get Garmin updates such as happened to me. If I saved anyone from going through the frustrations I did it was worth posting...plus I got some first hand positive feed back about Fire Fox.
Thank you again.
May everyone's day be better than your yesterday...mine has been for I woke up this fine mornin' which makes me a very happy person;

Me too

Never had a problem with FF and Garmin updates. I've played with Chrome a little, but haven't tried any updates with it, guess I won't based on your experience.
