I've got one of the gel type pads that was a give-away at a trade show from about 6 years ago. Doesn't work too well with the cell anymore, but it does have enough grip the bean bag doesn't move on dirt roads.

The site lists a warning on what types of surfaces this can be used on.

Changed my mind.............

I've always used the Garmin friction mount. I got a new car and it didn't really sit where I liked so I pulled out the suction mount that originally came with the unit. I stuck it on the console near the shift and it works GREAT. I dug around in the drawer and found the disk that came with it and stuck it on the dash of the old work car. It works GREAT. I don't give a rat's patootie about the dash on the work car but I think the disc will probably come off without damage if I ever decide to remove it. I don't care that the disc is always there and some clown may realize what it's for. I move the GPS to the trunk when I park at an office and I don't have the GPS in the car when I'm not traveling.

After years of denial, I've gone over to the dark side. I love the suction mount. How weird is that?

Disk Side story

When I using the old suction for window, had no problem but when time come, it drop down hard onto dashboard (that about 14" drop) and bound onto the floor (that about 30" drop) (no, it did not happen to me, see last line below). I now used disk mount right onto dashboard and mount the GPS holder onto the disk mount. Sometime, the holder came off but the GPS just fall easy onto dashboard (that about less than 1") without going over toward the floor. Therefor I recomment using dashboard disk instead of mount it onto the glass. I heard and seen many touch-screen and/or LCD screen get broke it from great fall.

I have a bean bag it works great. Suction mount works great if wet the cup and than it will stick. I had a suction cup in the past and that was the only way it stuck to windshield (spit in it and spread it around)

sliding bean bag

I use a product initially designed as an underlayment to prevent rugs from sliding on wood floors. It's very inexpensive and has many different uses. I wish I knew what it was called but I have seen it at Wal-mart in the kitchen utensils dept. Perhaps used as a drawer or shelf liner also. Hope this was helpful.

Good idea!

Came with my 560LMT

I have the bean bag mount, it came with my 560LMT that I recently bought. When I'm in the car, that's what I use, and it works just fine, doesn't slide even when I really "hook" a turn. I guess if I was almost at the point of losing traction on a dry asphalt it might turn over, but slide? I doubt it. Maybe this is just because it's new.

They do work better when new, which is only due to eventually getting a bit dirty. Keep them squeeky clean and they will work like new!

I have 2.
One is used in a vehicle with a vinyl dash it will not slide unless a hard turn is made.

the other one is used in a vehicle with a hard plastic dash. worked great when it was new, not the case now, even after cleaning it. so, I found a non slip dash pad lying around and now it on the dash and then put the bean bag on top of that. now it only slides when a hard turn is made or on washboard dirt roads.

bean bag mount

I had mome ever since I got my 660 and use it all the time. Never had it move once in any of the three vehicles I use it in. Best I've had.

Bean Bag & new 2012 line of Garmins

I've noted that the new line (2012 not yet released) of mounts for Garmins have a speaker incorporated into the mount itself. It makes me think that if I upgrade from my 765 I wouldn't be able to hear it in my car without investing in a whole new mount. It also begs the question of whether the connection to the mount has changed too.

There is nothing that

Which GPS units are compatible with the new mount with the incorporated speaker.

I love it

I have this and it is well worth it. My friend bought one and said that his dashboard was too angled to use it so just be aware. The mount has a sticky bottom so it shouldn't be a problem for most.

I've used my bean bag mount for years ever since our first Garmin 660. It still works great with the 1490. Highly recommend the bean bag mount.

Love the bean bag mount!

I have had two for a few years and they work great for me! I have not experienced any sliding on either one so far.

Thanks...

Amazon Price Tracking

If you are watching for a price drop on this item, one tool that I have found helpful is http://www.camelcamelcamel.com/. Use the ASIN: B000LRMS66 to generate:

http://camelcamelcamel.com/Garmin-010-10908-00-Portable-Fric...

It's not perfect and the checks will lag somewhat, but it should help in spotting price movements.

Watch where you place it.

Unless one does not care or wants to get rid of your passenger, it would be in the best interest that the beanbag mount if placed on the riders side of the dash be placed back far enough on the dash so that if they are in an accident the air bag does not hurl the GPS into the teeth of the passenger.

I still like the friction

I still like the friction mount.Has been with us all over the USA and it stays put on the dash.

Mounting Options

Vent Mount: My favorite, GPS screen is near field of outside vision and easily accessible. Can use touchscreen without reaching on top of dash, this is a really big deal for some larger cars. Not noticeable to most vehicles behind you at night. The location keeps the GPS out of the hot sun more often and cool air on the vent keeps internal temps down.

Bean Bag Mount: For cars where the vent mount can't be used. I like this mount but very heavy and big to lug around. It's location means GPS internal temps can easily exceed 60 C in the sun, probably not good for long battery and unit life.

Windshield Mount: This is what I take for travel and use in rental cars, etc. Light weight and easy to carry. Ditto about sun.

Thanks...

I got the Arkon Sun Visor Mount two years ago for my Nuvi 260 and have been very happy with it. Others who have seen it in use have bought it too.

I thought I might have to go to a bean bag when I got my 1490T, but the visor mount works just as well as it did with the smaller, lighter unit.

Ir works great in the three cars we've owned in that time, fits every rental car we've used and takes up NO space when we fly.

Still no need for a bean bag for me.

Thanks for the link! Bean bag mount works great in the car but in some semi's it bounces right off the dash!

Grip

It might have been this thread where I read you can clean the bean bag mount with alcohol when it stop gripping. I think after awhile, the bottom grip stuff becomes slick after picking up all the dust from the dash board. Instead of alcohol, I had this grip stuff I tried and it really seems to work. It's stuff that you put in tool drawers and utensil drawers to keep you tools from sliding around. It's called Non-Slip Liner and I got it at Home Depot awhile ago but I think you can get it all over the place. It's kind of spongy. I just used the bean bag mount as a stencil, cut out a piece of this stuff to match the bottom, super glued it on and it works great. It really grips the dash and doesn't move at all.

wow!
