Nuvi 755t and Custom POI Problems

Hi All:
I am missing something here--if anyone can help, it would be great. I'm trying to make what I now think may need to be a TourGuide file, but I'm not sure. I am uploading these with POI Loader--but they aren't working--and after hours of trying!

Under my directory for MyPoi, I want to have a folder for some custom poi locations (haunted houses in this case):

The three files that I have tried to use in this folder are as follows:

1.) .csv file? for the locations that I have made
ie.: -86.14345551 39.7113465 Hannah House Haunted House

2.) .bmp file? for an icon that pops up when I'm near these locations.

3.) .mp3 sound file? to become audible as I near these locations.

Here are file names I have used in this sub-folder but again, they are not working:

Haunted_Indiana.bmp
Haunted_Indiana.csv
Haunted_Indiana.mp3

Of course, the csv should be the lacations that I have chosen, the .bmp icon should pop up as I near them--it is a ghost, and the .mp3 file is a spooky sound, but none of it works.

I've also tried this with the poifriend downloads for the Starbucks csv, bmp and mp3 files, and they aren't working for me either. I'm sure it is operator error!

Should I be using something other than POI Loader??

I'd love some help if anyone can give it.

Thanks in advance!

Alert?

If you are expecting an alert, you need to run POI Loader in Manual mode.

TourGuide

If you are trying to set a TourGuide file to get a radius alert you have to include TourGuide in the file name.Example

TourGuide Haunted_Indiana.bmp
TourGuide Haunted_Indiana.csv
TourGuide Haunted_Indiana.mp3

The biggest problems with alerts and icons not working is not being named the same except for the extensions and double extensions.

See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 for custom pois.

If you don't use Tourguide in the file name you will only get along the road of travel alert unless you select Go tO.Otherwise if coordinates located more then 50 ft off the road you will not get the alert.

Thanks very much charlesd45: In your example, should there be a space in the file name between the word TourGuide and the word Haunted, or does it need to be connected with an underscore?
Also, should I be doing all of this with POI Loader, or should I be using some other tool?

Yes and make sure TourGuide

Yes and make sure TourGuide is just like I have spelled it here.I suggest you start by setting the radius alert for 2 miles using poiloader in manual mode. You can also have it like this also.

Haunted_Indiana TourGuide .bmp
Haunted_Indiana TourGuide .csv
Haunted_Indiana TourGuide.mp3

Double check the extensions.. The best way to prevent double extensions is to go to your folder options in the control panel and click view then find hide extensions for known file types and remove the check mark. Click ok.This is for Windows XP.

Still Missing?

Regarding underscores before or after (depending on placement of) "TourGuide". I have a file with underscores (and it works.) Just inquiring if it matters.

Thanx

I don't believe it makes a difference.I never use the underscore.I rename most files and shorten them as much as possibe.Less chance of mistakes.

I Would Recommend

I recommend putting it at the end.

The POI Loader lets you set proximity options on a file per file basis, but if you have the source buried deeply in folders (or long folder names) and even sometimes if not, you may not see the actual name of the file because the displayed name is truncated. So putting "TourGuide" at the end is one less thing that can get in the way of seeing which file is which during the load.

Using long files names or to much data in column c in excel creates another problem that is sometimes overlooked. When yu get the arrival notice at the end when you come to the location it is cut off. That is why I have re-named some custom pois using column c in excel.

That Went Over My Head

I'm not sure what excel per se had to do with the conversation.

Are you saying POI loader creates an excel file to use and remember the files and options you are using?

What am I missing? (In the conversation or techniques I might apply.)

Thanx in advance

Edit: Maybe you mean ala "Arriving at The Long and Ingloriously Named Restaurant that Exists on both sides of the Mason Dixon Line and Brew Pub"

But that still leaves me confused about "file names in column c in excel". Please explain the file names reference.

Still not working...

A couple of general questions:

1.) Do I need to select a voice which does not announce street names in order for this to work?

2.) Do I need to select a screen view other than 3D in order for this to work?

3.) Does anyone think that I should do a complete reset to my Garmin 755t and just start over? Maybe a file or something has become corrupt??

Thanks again!

Try this. You say you've loaded the files with POI Loader in Express and Manual mode, but when using Manual mode, did you also set an alert distance? Also, in case the haunted house is far enough off the roadway so that an alert won't occur unless it's a tourguide (within the specified radius), try creating a route to the house. It'd be helpful to see if you get an alert as you arrive at the house.

Tap WhereTo/Extras/Custom POIs/Haunted_Indiana TourGuide/"select one of them"/Go, then see if you get a visual and audio alert as you arrive. (You can also do this in simulator mode if you're not up for the drive.)

Good luck. This should work with any nuvi Voice and in 3D mode. The voice isn't used since what you'll hear is the mp3 you loaded.

I am not an expert on this

I am not an expert on this but I believe that if you want an audible alert when in proximity to the location, you must add "_redlight" after the file name.

Thanks Craigw: Question, in order for this to work, do I need to first "Tap WhereTo/Extras/Custom POIs/Haunted_Indiana TourGuide/"select one of them/Go?"

In other words, this type of alert wouldn't just work automatically if I were passing near one of these locations without having selected from the "WhereTo/Extras/Custom POIs/Haunted_Indiana TourGuide?"

Maybe this is where I have been missing on this (I feel like such a putz!).

Thanks for helping!

Hi sjmarks: Thanks for the

Hi sjmarks: Thanks for the reply. I have tried to do that (the "_redlight" file name) but instead of getting a voice alert, I only get a tone alert. I am trying to get a goofy mp3 message to play when ever I am near one of the locations from my .csv list.

I guess I thought I could accomplish this to where I could get this without having selected first from the Extras menu. In other words, like a redlight alert but with words.

It should work either way

It should work either way, since it's a TourGuide. (It wouldn't work in non-TourGuide mode if the house were far enough back from street--It took me a long time to figure out how to get alerts for Schools by using TourGuide mode, but I now get quite the audio alert

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/11630

when near School Zones!)

But given the issues with seeing or getting alerts as you pass by them, a good test to see if you get any audio or visual alert is to create a route to one of them. If you're not getting visual/audio alerts on arrival at the end of a route, then you'll never get them as you pass by them (and if you can't find the Custom POI to create a route to it, we'll know something else--I assume that after running POI Loader, you do get the Successfully downloaded xxx POIs message).

Yes, after I run POI Loader,

Yes, after I run POI Loader, I get "Successfully Downloaded 24,000 (approx) POIs."

To your earlier point though, if I were to simulate a route (in other words, on the GPS without driving there), should I be able to get a visual and audio (mp3 voice) alert when I arrive, or get within the set distance that I set in manual mode? That would be helpful as I play with trying to get this thing to work.

Also, When you said "It wouldn't work in non-TourGuide mode if the house were far enough back from street," by "TourGuide Mode," did you mean with TourGuide in the file name? I mean, there isn't some other setting for TourGuide, right?

Thanks again.

Yes, alerts work in simulator mode and can save you bunches of gas!

Yes, that's what I meant by TourGuide mode.

Even though you will eventually want to get audio/visual alerts when passing by a POI, we need to see if the issue is something to do with TourGuides, or if the issue is more basic. Once we narrow the problem, we'll do better at solving it. {Fingers crossed as a typed that.}

If you have selected one of the custom pois as go to and the alert does not work. The problem most likely is
