Maximum Route Trace on Garmin 250W

Just got back from a trip to the U.S. to shorted the winter.

I started in Edmonton Alberta and spent the first night in Idaho Falls. Next day took me to Vegas for the weekend. Then onto Phoenix for a week returning to Canada via Page AZ, Salt Lake and Idaho Falls.

I set the route to record just before I left and when I rejoined the interstate back from route US 89 I could see the south bound trace I recorded earlier on the trip. That continued until later that night when I got back to Idaho Falls. It then stopped.

After a little Google Map figuring I estimate that the maximum memory for the trace on this unit must be somewhere between 1800 and 2000 miles. I did drive around the cities a bit and the total route is just over 1800 miles so I would guess 2000 miles or 1999 considering how computers work.

So this post is more of a bit of information and not a complaint. If you want to keep a record of a trip then make sure you of load the data off to a computer with Map Source before you hit the memory limit.

trip record

Bob: What type of info can be saved onto Map Source? I am still using an old Magellan hand-held because the "Bread Crumb" feature is very important to me. I use the "Time Stamps" to verify the location of every digital pic when I get back home.

Any answers? I really would like to save trip data.

I don't use this feature, but it has been discussed many times. I have seen it called Trip Log and Track Log. You may want to search on both.

It is probably discussed on Gary Hayman's site also.

MapSource and Track Log files

On my 260W my Track Logs are recorded and saved in files on the unit that are 1000KB in size. As the file size limit is reached, a new file is started and the old one is archived with a name like 1.gpx, 2.gpx, etc. These files can be moved to your computer and viewed using MapSource. As long as you do not "clear track log" the current file will be archived when it gets full(1000KB).

Memory

Sorry I have been off the forum. The question was already answered. The maximum route distance is an estimate since it does need to fit into the memory of the unit. If the route that you take has lots of turns instead of a straight line then I'm sure that the maximum will be reached before long. This is probably why my route vanished around Idaho Falls as I did drive around getting gas and checking out hotel prices.

If you have map source installed on your computer then you can off load the route or even plot a route to upload. I haven't played around with it much since the first Garmin GPS I purchased (C330) didn't support routes. It wasn't until I got the eTrek Vista that saving and plotting routes was an option.

That unit also supported Geocashing which I tried out briefly. The 250W also would save the Geocashing POI's including the Treasure chest symbol.

10,000 points

It has been explained here that the Track Log will hold 10,000 points and then start over and rewrite the oldest tracks after that. One thread is here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/14256

I don't think it's based on distance or file size. Straight lines don't take as many points to describe a road as much as a road with a lot of curves would.

On a recent road trip that had a lot of scenic routing, AKA twisty back roads, we only got around 600 miles before the track log started eating it's own tail.
