Saving a trip log

I use my Nuvi 855 when I go "Jeeping" on the trails and dry washes here in AZ and I would like to save a COMPLETE log of a ride for future use. How can I do this?

TIA,

Jim

dump them to a computer

You need to take a computer with you that has Mapsource and dump the logs daily. The unit has limited storage space for these logs and if you don't dump at least daily - at the start and end of each day you could loose info.

Option

I would think seriously think about a 60Cx or 76Cx for such purposes. It will help if you get lost or broken down when your Jeep has no battery. It happens.

They have almost unlimited track storage ability when sent to the MicroSD card.

There is another thread discussing route converters, etc. I too am interested in the mechanics of doing what you asked. How to
1. save a useful log or waypoint file.
2. create from that a (in my case Garmin 765T) custom route for future navigating.
3. get that final route actually loaded into the GPS custom route catagory.

Raw track logging

frontline, this won't help mandalayjim with his 855, but your 765 has a hidden "raw track logging" capability. It takes a few steps, but it is possible to import the raw logs into Mapsource, or use GPSVisualizer to convert them into GPX. You can then use the track as a template to create a route using via points, then transfer it back to the nuvi for import as a route.

There is a lengthy discussion about raw logging in the gpspassion forum. Since it is on another forum, I won't give a link here, but just google for "Garmin raw track logging" and you will find it.

Okay, I have

downloaded the single trip log into my computer using Map Source. I see it in the computer and have now erased it from the GPS.

I went thru the process of transferring the trip log BACK into the GPS with a "Transfer complete" message but now I can't find it in the GPS. Any help is appreciated.

Should find it here

route, not track

I don't think it is possible to transfer a track from Mapsource to the nuvi. You could display the track in Mapsource, then use the routing tool to create a route using vias that follows along the track. You can then transfer the route from mapsource to the nuvi and import it using the method described by a_user.

Personally, I find Mapsource cumbersome for route construction, but some users like it.

The track log

The track log on the Nuvi would be in the Current.gpx file so I agree that you probably can't transfer the log from Mapsource to the Nuvi, although Mapsource will tell you that it did so successfully.

Another reason to use GPSvisualizer or something like it and the 'raw logging' feature in many Nuvi models. That way you can combine up to 8 gps.bin files from the Nuvi into a single .gpx file and send it to the Nuvi like you would a route from Mapsource.

765T has an archive

On my 765T, as t923347 said, the latest track log is in the Current.gpx file, as are my Routes. And as others have said, MapSource will show the Waypoints (POI's), Routes, and Tracks when you load it in.

I'm not sure what the criteria is for when my tracks 'archive' out of the Current.gpx file, but on the unit I have an Archive subfolder in the Garmin\GPX folder which currently has 5 files named 1.gpx through 5.gpx that contain all of my older track logs. They seem to add a number once the size approaches 1k or slightly less. I have no idea how far up the numbers will increment, but I'm not a heavy user of this unit and for me this goes back slightly more than a year.

I make copies of Current.gpx, load it into MapSource, delete all the waypoints and routes, and the track logs I don't want, then save the remaining track log(s) as gpx with some meaningful name when I want to keep them. Same with the numbered archive files except they only contain tracks, not waypoints or routes.
