Nuvi internal speaker

Anyone know where to purchase an internal speaker for a 680? I know how to change it, just can not find where to buy the part. With all the posts about the internal speaker you would think someone would sell them.

Perhaps....

... if you open up the unit you can find a part number.

Given that, an internet search almost always works.

and maybe here...

When my Nuvi 350's speaker broke, I suspected I could find an equivalent replacement here:

(Instead I bought a new Garmin.)

Good luck!

Internet search turned up

A ebay item, you might need to wait a little to get it.

what about ebay

you could try and see if anyone might be selling a broken one on ebay that you can harvest the speaker from. Could be good for other parts too?

Parts like that can be hard to find

Parts like that can be hard to find. I agree that getting your hands on a broken unit might be the best way to guarantee compatibility. That ebay listing may work, but you would want to verify that the 680 had the same speaker as its siblings in the 600 series. I'm not sure what is broken about the original speaker, but if the voice coil isn't blown you could measure impedance and look for parts that meet specs.

680 internal speaker

I appreciate all the input from everyone. If your speaker doesn't work it is the frustrating. Till I find one I went with the Radio Shack "pillow speaker $21.00) Once I find out where to find an internal speaker I will post it. It is not a hardware item that is high tech, just a speaker. You would think I was looking for the Lost Dutchman's mine.

680 Internal Speaker

Well, after searching the net, talking with Garmin and getting nowhere, I decided to take a speaker from an old Nuvi 350 and install it in my Nuvi 680. It is working great.
My experience led me to alot of places. One company that had the speaker and stated on their web site that they were very busy and you have to get in their que. The pricing was fair $35.00 but the time line was unknown.
www.sharc.net/gps_repair.htm. This seemed to be the best as far as information I found on the web thanks to one of POI'S members.

Try

Try http://www.mcmelectronics.com/. I buy many of my electronic componets from them.

Replacement Speakers

The speakers being sold in the ad on eBay (as listed above) are ones harvested from used units. Stay away from those. The problem with these speakers are they are underated in power.

When you buy a used speaker, you have no clue as to its health. It may work for a while, then die too. What was the history of the unit it was pulled out from? Was it subjected to water damage? Overvoltage?

The speaker diaphragm is made of plastic so it won't show any signs of water damage but the water could seep inside where the voice coil is.

I've seen intermittent speakers. Tap on them they will quit. Tap on them again and they will work again.

Same story on Nuvi batteries. Buy new, don't buy a used one on Ebay. I've seen leaky batteries, bloated ones, ones that won't hold a charge. Anything with a 2 yr or greater date code, stay away from it. Older batteries can bloat and actually split your case apart.

Here's a pic of one:

http://www.sharc.net/images/bloated_battery1.jpg

Bluetooth is extremely hard on these speakers. When you make a call, the audio levels are much higher than normal navigation audio levels and when you end the call, the CLICK punches the speaker. It's like setting the volume at FULL on youur stereo and turning on the power and then off. That's really rough on a speaker.

The stock speakers are rated at 1 Watt. The ones I use are rated at 2W. Always try to find a better part and the reason why the 1st speaker blew out in the 1st place.

Btw, the Ebay guy from the UK that is selling the used speakers is also selling ones for the Nuvi 2xx(w) & 7xx but he doesn't mention that some models use a 4 Ohm and some use a 8 Ohm. You need to replace the speaker with one that is the same impedance.

680 internal speaker

Jim, I thought your site was great. As a businessman I understand your not wanting to sell parts. We do use the bluetooth function and now I understand why they only last so long. Your prices are very reasonable. I saw the stack of Garmins on your desk, its like the amount of air conditoners we have in Phoenix when it hits 110 degrees. Thanks for all the information.

Speaker Replacements

It's not that it really affected the business as it was more of problem related to people further damaging their units during the replacment process. Not everyone is electro-mechanically inclined wink and that's OK.

I'd spend over an hour on the phone with a customer after they cracked their screen, pulled a LCD cable loose or snapped off a LCD locking flap.

As for the bluetooth, I know it's hard to do while driving but I'd take the volume level down to 60-70% when making a call. All you have to do is tap the power button and the volume menu will pop up.

Summer is coming.... I could use an air conditioner smile Maybe I can do some GPS trades for one... don't laugh, I traded a GPS system for a gold crown with my dentist. wink

Free Nuvi Service

Well,
Theres an offer I may not be able to refuse. We have ten of these Nuvi's. We are on our third generation and this is the first problem other than changing the batteries.
We experience the same problem when people try to fix their air condtioner. In my 40 years of being in this business,I have seen things not even God thought of being done to the equipment.
I appreciate your candor and humor!

Replacemen Speaker

I have a funny air conditioner story. My parents bought a Whirpool casement window air conditioner in the early 70's. That thing ran and ran and always blew cold air. Well, I bought the house in '91 and continued to run the unit until the case actually rusted and fell off.

So I fabricated a new case out of aluminum and secured it to the chassis. There was one screw that had rusted and broke off in he chassis, so I had to drill a new hole through the new case into the chassis.

Well, as I drilled, the next thing I knew, it was like being in a wind tunnel. Yep, drilled and knicked the core sad

Game Over

You Have Friends

As I started to read the story,I knew what happened. Some people put the screw back in the hole, epoxy it and by some freon and try to make it work.
Stories like these are what we share over coffee when winter hits us.
