Loading Map on SD Card

I have my SD Sub directories setup the same as my NUVI 350 sub directories and currently load all my POIs onto the SD Card.

At the present time, I have sufficient memory on my NUVI with about 500+ Meg free space. I had 600+ Meg before I loaded 2011.10. It is likely that I will eventually run out of room.

When I loaded the map, I did see where it prompts you where you want to load the map, but I don't know if I have to have a specific sub directory called Maps or something or does this just load to the Garmin main directory?

I would appreciate some guidance.

Map on a SD card

Map image file needs to be located in a folder named "Garmin" on your SD card. If you use the MapSource you'll need to make the folder before you send the map to the card. If you use the MapInstall program there is no need to make the folder. It's done by the program. The image file is named (by both programs) gmapsupp.img. You can't load more than one map per SD card.

Old map

Is it necessary to delete the old map from the NUVI? I see that I can check which map I want to use. I( see gmapprom.img and gmapbmap.img in the Garmin directory on the NUVI. Or does the install automatically delete it, even when it's installed on the SD.

I wouldn't

I personally wouldn't delete gmapprom.img although it wouldn't be used any more. Gmapbmap.img is the base map and you'll need it. All maps installed on this way are supplemental maps and during the installation process the main map (gmapprom.img) doesn't get deleted. It's up to you to decide what to do with it.

Thanks

Good advice.

I will leave this file alone. If I Load everything on the SD Card, then it doesn't really matter if main memory is limited, if it doesn't get used.

DON´T delete Gmapbmap.img.

DON´T delete Gmapbmap.img. I accidently did and my Nuvi slowed down and after restoring my US map the maps resolution was all screwed up. The tech rep at Garmin was very surprised when he deleted the Gmapbmap.img at their lab. After I was able to restore the Gmapbmap.img everything went back to normal.

The tech was probably also surprised that you deleted the file. They probably didn't consider deleting it and didn't think anyone else would. I'm not criticizing them. It's impossible to think of all the nuances of what tech-savvy users are going to do.
