Garmin having a problem with 2011.10 map update showing for 8xx series

I have a 885t and just got off the phone with Garmin tech support.

They are having a problem with the update showing as being available on the 8xx series Nuvi's.

They are aware of it and are working on a fix that they thought would happen very quickly.

Yep

Yep. Garmin's site is telling me my 855's map is current.

I guess I will have to wait.

I purchased my 885T just two weeks ago

I purchased my 885T just two weeks ago. It came with 2010.10 installed.

At that time the Garmin MyDashboard said that there was a free map update available to 2010.4. I did not get the update because of the rumours that 2011.10 would be available in the near future.

I have been checking MyDashboard every few days, expecting the new maps to be released, but last week I noticed that MyDashboard began reporting that NO map updates were available for my unit. Not even 2010.4.

I was concerned because the 885T has been discontinued by Garmin, and I thought that maybe map updates would no longer be available. I feel better now after hearing you are seeing the same thing. Let's hope it is just a glitch on the web site.

I wonder...

Since I have a 750 and a 855, I have the new map installed on the 750 and PC, but as we're all finding, the 855 and other 800-series (805 series?) GPS units don't show the update as being available yet.

I half-thought last night that I could run the 2GB update file (saved from my 750 update) with the 855 connected by USB figuring that with lifetime maps paid for on the 855, that the update file would install 2011.10 properly on the 855. But then, I worried that if Garmin has issues showing a map available for the 855, that it may also have an issue with an unlock code and I'd end up with an 855 with a locked 2011.10 for a while if I tried the update with the saved file.

Can anyone confirm that running the 2GB update file will either work or fail with the 8xx series (with lifetime maps) now, assuming that we have the update file from another updated nuvi?

On another note, when I look at my Map Downloads page on mygarmin site, I see that my lifetime update 2011.10 on my 750 is being listed as a One-time Update, not a Lifetime. Garmin's web site does have some issues with this update.

.

Same here with my 765. One area describes it as being Onetime, another area states it as being 2010.10 (yes, 2010.10 and NOT 2011.10) while another area states it correctly as Lifetime 2011.10.

I also noticed that your unlock codes for each map update (for any/all units) are no longer shown at all that I could find. The codes used to be accessible under myMaps/Map downloads.

880

We have three Garmin units -- 600 series, the 880 and 1690. All three are subscribed to the lifetime update. We noticed last night that the 600 series and 1690 listed new updates, but nothing was listed for the 880. I guess it's good to see that this is a known issue, and we don't need to hassle with tech support to figure out where our 880 update is.

Anyone know what the latest map is for the Nuvi 765. Also do you need a separate update to handle the 3d features.

Newest map for the 765 is the one being discussed in various topics here...2011.10

All aspects of the 765's additional features such as 3D Buildings are updated by the single map update.

Very interesting. I've been trying to update my 855 since the update came out but I continue to get the No Updates Available all yesterday, today, and just after reading your message and before posting this reply.

Did you update from 2010.40 or an earlier version?

Very odd-that your 855 did update while all the rest of us 8xx folks can't.

.

Contrary to popular belief, you can use the same downloaded map update file to update multiple nuvis. The only difference is the actual device verification process which validates the device with Garmin's servers before the actual map update begins. Maybe Alan used the map update file from the 7x5 unit he also has to update his 855...

I know I sure wouldn't download the same map update file for each GPS I was updating.

Actually I updated my 855 before I updated my 755T, so I updated the 855 directly from the download. I was at map 2010.40 before the update. Both units were listed in MyGarmin as Update Available.

Darn, it doesn't work. So if you're tempted to do what I've done, stop now.

Like others, I find that my 855 with lifetime maps shows no map update available for the new 2011.10 City Navigator from the currently-installed 2010.40 map on the 855. But since I also have a 750 with lifetime maps, I was able to download the update file for the 2011.10 maps, garmin_rmu_cnnant2011_10.exe to my desktop which successfully updated the 750 to 2011.10.

I thought that running this update file with my 855 attached to my laptop computer (from a DVD burned with the update file and copied onto the laptop's hard drive) would update my 855 to the new map.

It doesn't. Very odd, though. As I doubled-clicked the 2011 exe file to start it, it showed that it was downloading the map and not using the data from 2+GB exe file. After installing the map to the GPS and PC, I started up both Mapsource and my 855. Both continue to show only the 2010.40 map.

I can only assume that the error which causes Garmin's mygarmin site not to show a map update available to the nuvi 8xx series is also not allowing the 2011.10 map to be installed to the 855, even though it is a registered numaps lifetime GPS. The only good news from all this is that it appears so far that I haven't corrupted my 2010.40 map in Mapsource and haven't bricked the 855.

So to make a long story short, if your 8xx series nuvi isn't showing a map update to the new 2011.10 map as being available, then running the 2011 update file from Garmin won't install the new map on your 8xx. At least that's what I find with my 855 on April 22.

Thanks for the head's up

CraigW - Thanks for being the guinea pig on this. I was tempted to try the same thing on the 880 with the update from my 6xx tonight. I imagined it wouldn't work, but this saves me some time in trying.

I also emailed tech support about this issue. The reply email was comical, and it suggests Garmin is bogged down right now or they simply don't pay any attention to the actual issue raised in the email. Their only response to my question concerning the missing update for the 880 was, "If you would like to take advantage of lifetime map updates, please purchase the nüMaps Lifetime North America Map Updates ..." LOL. Uh, excuse me, Garmin, but I already purchased the lifetime update; I just want to know where 2011.1 is for my 880.

You're welcome, I think wink. I see elsewhere that this map update results in partially locked maps on some 7x5 units. Given the number of 7x5 and 8xx units in the field and knowing that these aren't discontinued models, it does beg the question of just how much testing Garmin does with new maps and their distrbution methods before offering them to the public.

Oh well, in a few days, this should be history and we'll all be happily having Jill or Karen direct us around with the 2011 map.

CraigW wrote:

Sorry it didn't work for you Craig. Because it didn't work, you can be assured that the problem lies with Garmin's servers and the unit validation process. The same map update file always works for additional units...it's always worked in the past and I see no reason why it shouldn't be any different with this release. I;ll bet when they correct the problem, you can use the same download for the 750 that you already have.

Sometimes, it takes some experimentation to resolve an issue...sometimes it works out, other times, you have no control. cool

Unlock code?

CraigW, how did you get an unlock code when you tried to install the map update on your 855? Does the MyGarmin site show you the 2011.10 product key/unlock code for 2011.10 even though it doesn't show Update Available? If you don't have the unlock code, I can understand why the install didn't work.

When I do my map updates, I'ver never needed to enter any code. As long as I have my GPS USBed to the computer when I start the 2GB map update file, the Garmin servers recognize my unit and that it has a lifetime contract for maps and simply installs the new map to Mapsource and my GPS with auto-filling of any needed keys or codes. I haven't needed to enter an unlock code at any time after registering my numaps lifetime to a GPS unit.

As I thought earlier in this thread, I did fear that running the update file for my 855 would fail--and it did. But it didn't fail due to my being unable to enter an unlock code--as I said when describing my attempt to install 2011 on my 855, the "2011 exe update map file" simply downloaded and reinstalled what Garmin thinks to be the most recent City Navigator, 2010.40.

Or am I misunderstanding your question?

A bit off-topic

Apologies in advance for going a bit off-topic, but when I updated the 6xx last night to 2011.1, webupdater found no new system updates for the unit, but I must have downloaded/installed 5 system updates from the Dashboard tab. Any idea why webupdater wouldn't report that an update is available for the system while the myDashboard tab indicates a software update is available (several times over, as experienced yesterday)?

Thanks.

This has been discussed before

This has been discussed before but I'm not sure how to search the archives for it, so here's the jist of it:

Dashboard tells you of "firmware" updates available even when they're just foreign language voices, text updates, etc. that you choose not to download.

The general consensus here among experienced users is to only use Webupdater for firmware and other updates and not to use Dashboard.

I bet you're right

Sorry it didn't work for you Craig...I;ll bet when they correct the problem, you can use the same download for the 750 that you already have.

I expect you're right. But maybe to be safe, once mygarmin says my 855 has a new map available, I'll probably do another download and launch it rather than retry running the file from my 750 update.

repost

trclac wrote:

The updates that myDashboard downloaded were most likely not system updates but "additional updates" such as voice, help file or text file updates. In order for WebUpdater to display these update, you need to "Proceed to check for additional updates, such as voice files" when prompted by WebUpdater.

I tried to find my original post (which I'm reposting below) but cannot so here it is again...

Quote:

First off, to see what firmware (or "System Software" in Garmin-speak) is on your unit, press Tools>Settings>System>About. The "Software Version" number should be displayed in the upper-right corner.

For example: Software Version 4.60

myDashboard vs WebUpdater

myDashboard does not specifically tell you what is being updated on your GPS nor does it give you the option to select which updates you want to install. It will also always state "Updating Firmware" regardless of what is being updated. Yes, it does update the firmware on the unit but there are also additional updates as well that may also be available for the unit. These additional updates can be GPS Chipset updates, voice updates, help & text file updates, GTM xx updates (FM traffic receiver), GDB 5x updates (MSN Direct receiver), etc. For example, when myDashboard updates voices, it updates ALL the voices on the unit, regardless of if you use them or not which can be quite time consuming to download and install. Using WebUpdater in this case, you can update just the voice you are using rather than all of the voices on the unit.

Using WebUpdater instead of myDashboard will allow the user to see exactly what updates are available for the unit and gives the user the option to update or not update those components.

You can also use a combination of myDashboard along with WebUpdater as I do. Use myDashboard (if you're already in your browser) to see if any updates are available. If there are, switch to WebUpdater to see exactly what updates are available and update those which you are interested in applying to the unit.

You can download WebUpdater from the Garmin website:

Yes, I know of this and of the storage of the codes in the GarminDevice.xml file. The point I'm making is that the unlock codes used to be clearly listed in your myGarmin/myMaps account info but now they are no longer there. I guess Garmin wants to hide these codes from view, even from the rightful owners of them unless you use other means to retrieve them.

Doing everying Garmin suggests below (going to mydashboard for the update or rerunning my update file from my other nuvi, a 750) I continue to see that Garmin's web site does not acknowledge the new map for my 855. And really sadly, even though some at Garmin are aware of this issue, it's not being reported down the line to their tech support staff. A very sad state of affairs. Their reply:

Dear xxxxx,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. You should be able to connect your 855 to the computer, log into your myGarmin account, and select the tab for myDashboard. This should show a map update available for your 855. Please click on this to start the update. When the system provides you with a Product Key, write it down.

Now find the file that you downloaded for your 750 and double click on it and it will start extracting. It will get to a point where it will ask you for a Product Key. Now enter the key that you recorded earlier. This should prevent you from having to do the download again,

They are aware of it and are working on a fix that they thought would happen very quickly.

Email replies from Garmin today which sadly suggests it'll be May 6th before we can expect a fix:

Dear xxxxx,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I will be happy to help you with this. I apologize for your issues you are having with your map update. Temporarily the 2011 map is not available for Nuvi 8xx series devices due to the new maps including Mexico. Our IT team is working on getting this fixed and they have a date of May 6th for this to be completed. Please log into your MyGarmin account on May 6th and check for updates then. Once it is available you will need to download the new file for the 8xx series and install that on your device. If you have any other questions please feel free to reply to this email. Have a great day!

With Best Regards,

and another:

Dear xxxxx,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International, I will be happy to help you with the device that you have there and the maps that you are trying to download. I apologize first of all that this is not working for you, we encountered a problem with the downloads for the 800 series of units and we are attempting to correct this as quickly as possible to make the updates available for download for them Unfortunately at this point in time we had to remove the 800 series from eligibility as there was a software interaction that was not working properly. We should have this back up and working for you very soon. Thank you for your patience in this matter as it is greatly appreciated.

With Best Regards,

Somebody needs to get their act together. I logged into My Garmin last night and was told the 2011 map was available for my 885. I downloaded and installed it. It has Mexico, but it may not be a full load as it couldn't find Mexico City or Puerto Vallarta. I didn't try Cancun or any other city. If I have to reload after the 6th, so be it - but then I don't plan on going to Mexico any time in the next 20 years.

Interesting.

Mexico City & Puerto Vallarta are both found with full detail on my 855. Makes me wonder if something else is wrong with my copy that I haven't found yet and if Garmin will ask me to re-download on May 6. As of now my.garmin.com is showing that my download will expire on May 5.

Garmin map upgrade time is awful

I began by purchasing a map upgrade for my Nuvi 600 and never dreamed that this process would proceed as if I were back on dial-up and would be required to spend hours completing this upgrade. The download times are all over the place ranging from 17 hours to 1 hour. Map preparation suggests 5 minutes, the only time frame which seems logical. Installing the maps; reports a time frame of 65 minutes. I'm wondering, if this server is located in someone's backyard garage. Honestly, it's hard to believe this is actually Garmin. The download vehicle is called Garmin map update version 2.5.16. I love your product Garmin but your update process is unacceptable. I should have ordered the CD and have done with it. This can't be good for sales and hardly a good representation of your company.

My download times have been on the order of 20-30 minutes. I do remember that starting about 2-3 days after the most recent new map became available, folks were complaining of server overload due to so many folks trying to download simultaneously. So if broadband internet users are receiving download estimates of over an hour, the best thing to do may be to wait a day or two rather than stumble along with slow servers during the few-day peak activity. (Note that folks that heard here on Day 1 were able to complete the dowload quite quickly--another perk of following POI Factory before the hoi polloi learn of an update's availability.)

Note: the map update process described for this old map is no longer the method being used now. This thread regarding the 2011.10 update is related to the old process where a single 2GB file was downloaded, then executed. The process (starting 1-2 updates after this one) does not use this old method.

Map installation is mostly dependent on the model of nuvi being updated. Your nuvi 600 has a USB 1.1 connection which is going to slow installation (ditto for your big POI installations with POI Loader) compared to the newer nuvi models with a USB 2 connection.

Note that numaps lifetime folks only have the option of online updates, so the DVD route won't be available to them.

BTW, welcome to POI Factory, hgfire1. You'll find a lot of useful information here above and beyond the large assortment of POI files, alert audio and icons.

Map update.

hgfire1, first ... welcome to the POI Factory.

I have updated maps each quarter since nuMaps Lifetime was first introduced two years ago, on 2 different nuvi's for a total of 13 updates. I have not experienced the variations you describe. The total time for download/update combined is usually between 1 and 2 hours. The first update I did (January 2009) took about 3 hours. That was the longest update time I have experienced, and Garmin has improved the process and download performance since then. If you are getting download times of up to 17 hours and the huge variations you describe, I think the problem must be with your ISP connection.

I doubt its ISP related

I could have downloaded 4 full length movies easily in half this amount of time. I started around 4:00 pm and its now 10:51pm and this stupid thing is still laboring along. I can't ever be bothered to D/L something this pathetic again. It's true the Nuvi 600 is of the USB 1.0 variety but lets wait till the D/L completes before measuring the install into the Garmin. The D/L is going to the HD not the Garmin. This issue should not even be in question. Paying customers just want the thing to work and efficiently.
