Garmin 265 WT

Can you tell me the downsides of this Garmin model. I'm thinking of picking up a second unit (my first is a 350) for my better half's use. I know it doesn't have a mp3 player. I assume it can have an extra card for poi's. Anyway, what are the problems with it?

Thanks.

No major problems so far

I purchased the 265wt last December it works great.
The price was right at $150 for lifetime traffic with the included receiver on the power cord, bluetooth, and a nice 3.81 x 2.25 screen size. The POI from POI Factory works great and although it does not play mp3 files, the POI voice files work fine as .wav files with the sox.exe file. I have customized the voice commands and got rid of the annoying 'recalculating'.
I have a 2 gb card for pictures.
The only problem that sometimes occur is when I have multiple POI voice alerts occur at the same time and the voice locks up. I do not know if it is just my unit but I just turn it off and back on with no further problems.

265 WT

Thanks to you both for the info. It was a very useful discussion & points made will allow me to evaluate the unit better.

Consider the 265T

The only difference is that the screen isn't as wide, which I don't think matters much. It is easier to carry in my briefcase, as well as being less expensive.

Consider

The 265WT I saw was at Costco for #169.95, which is cheap enough, if it doesn't have serious flaws. Thanks though.

Our first GPS and I

Our first GPS and I absolutely love it. The only missing feature that my lack of product knowledge caused me to ignore was the absence of routes. The 265WT doesn't support them.

almost nothing

I have 265wt, 285wt and 765wt, my favourite is 265wt. it has the most bang for the buck. the traffic fm receiver is priceless. so as the bluetooth connectivity. My only wish is if it had a larger screen. I think gps between 5 to 6 inch would make it easy on your eyes.

Happy with mine

I got mine, my first gps, the Friday after Thanksgiving. The biggest nuisance is the arrangement of the keypad to enter the PIN. The number areas need to be taller. You can't reach and enter the numbers with your fingertip easily. I think I'll just disable that. Otherwise, I'm happy, although I don't live in an area with good traffic coverage.

Garmin 265WT

Thanks for the additional comments. I live in MD near Washington, DC so not only will I have traffic data, but also traffic problems! That's one interest.

So far I'm most concerned about not having the cross streets displayed on the map as you proceed on the road you're on. I also probably won't like that the holder for the Garmin is not powered, but can live with that.

Fred

i HAVE THE 265wt as well

i HAVE THE 265wt as well as 885T. I like the 265WT a lot but the only thing I wish it had is the advance lane guidance. I think that's important.

Sox.Exe File

how do i get my POI to give me a alert when i am approaching as my old tomtom did. I wish i could get all my POI to give me a alert when I am near by.. Thanks Steve

MY 265Wt

I just received my 265wt last week, and so far I really enjoy it. I did have a TomTom 530 which was pretty old, and now with the 265wt with a bigger screen it works so much better.

See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730 .You have to use wav files for the 265. See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25721 for custom pois.

A question

I am a new 265T user. I see that the traffic icon does not show up on the screen all the time. I have traffic avoidances enabled. Does the traffic icon come on only when traffic alerts are available or is something wrong with my unit?

If you are in the area not

If you are in the area not receiving traffic data the green icon will not appear on the gps screen.

You have to be ...

As charlesd45 just said, you have to be in an area covered by traffic transmissions.

@sredni

When that first happen to me shortly after having the unit,Driving on I10 I thought for sure something was wrong when I lost the icon.Once I got to a hotel and pulled up coverage map I knew then what the problem was.Understand your concern.

Favorites

I agree, but I use the favorites when planning a route, that way I'm not stuck on a "route" and can always backtrack anytime or quit the "route" all together, and start up with the next "favorite" i need.
Others have tried the VIA point, but I personaly don't like to use that.

265WT great basic unit

I've got a 265T loaded with the base and supplemental maps and poi's, some with alerts. The screen is wide enough for me but I do wish I had the QWERTY keyboard the 265WT has. This is my 2nd unit as the first did resets which would lose user data. Garmin did a warranty replacement with no problems. The bluetooth is totally unsatisfactory but a noisy interior may contribute. I have not had the problems with multiple alerts as someone reported. I would not hesitate to recommend a 265WT as a great basic unit.

Love it. Great unit.

I too have learned to live

I too have learned to live without. The rest of the features outweigh this one negative. I'll use one or two via points at times.

Picked up a 265WT for a week

Picked up a 265WT for a week now and suits our needs. Traffic was a plus but can see it as a downside if you don't live in aread with traffic coverage.

Slugish Screen

I have been using my Nuvi 260 for a few days, updating it and getting it ready for out of town visitors, and it seems to react a lot faster when you touch the screen when compared to my 265wt. The 265wt seems positively sluggish by comparison. Anyone else noticed this? confused

265 vs 855

My 265 seems to react faster than my 855. Maybe it depends on what the unit is doing when you touch the screen.
