Red light cameras

Just ordered Red Light Camera POI but not sure how it works. When using my 255W to navigate from point A to B, does the Red Light Camera work on the bacground to automatically warn me when I approach an intersection which is being monitored by Red Light Camera? any set up on my 255W I have to perform for this feature to work ?
Thank you.

Hi Neil,You will want to

Hi Neil,

You will want to download the CSV, MP3 and BMP files for Red Light Cameras. There are several MP3 and BMP files to choose from. Choose one each that you like.

Also download and install the Garmin POI Loader if you haven't already done so. It is available here:

http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/

Before you get started, be sure the CSV, MP3 and BMP files are in the same folder and have the same name (IE: Red-Light-Cameras.csv, Red-Light-Cameras.mp3 and Red-Light-Cameras.bmp). This is important!

You can name them anything that you like but all three need to have the same name.

Next, connect your 255W to the PC and run POI Loader. Follow the prompts to load your POI files into your 255W.

That's it! The next time you are approaching a Red Light Camera, your 255W will sound an audible alert and display an icon on the screen. (Yes, this POI works in the background.)

For more information, there is a FAQ here specifically pertaining to Red Light Cameras POI's.

Enjoy!

Thanks for your prompt

Thanks for your prompt replies. Great forum, great people.

I think 'redlight' needs to

I think 'redlight' needs to be all strung together in the title with no hyphens.

Any poi file with the letters "redlight" in the file name will cause the PND to issue an alert a quarter mile from the mark. If you have an icon with the same root name, that will show at the marked point. If you have an audio file root name, that will play at the warning point. The POIloader sets all this when you upload the files from a common folder or directory.

I understand the alerts are direction specific but I am still trying to figure out how that works.

Very Simple

Direction specific

I'm not to sure the system us direction specific as I was going to Florida and went through El Paso, TX. and was traveling East toward Fla. and I got a warning of a red light camera while on I-10 so I didn't think to much about it and then on the way back heading West I got the same redlight warning. While I think it was on the frontage road I couldn't be sure I didn't see any indication of a camera.

Direction Specific

The same thing happens in depressed limited-access expressways, with parallel service roads and intersections at street level, in New York City. As you are driving at 65 mph, you get one alert after another from the red light POIs, even with a short proximity distance of 500 feet.

A_user and others have said the proximity area is not a radius but a rectangle 50 feet wide and as long as your setting in POI Loader. These nearby intersections must be within 50 feet of the expressway lanes. Perhaps nothing can be done about this.

There are plans to improve the red light file to make it direction specific, and each location will need to be looked at.

Start Simple

Lacsong, start simple and work up to it. Just load the red light camera file with POI Loader. This will use the default proximity alert chime (bong - bong). After you see this working right, you can add .mp3 sounds and icons.

@Lacsong

If you decide to use voice alerts later on you will have to use wav files not mp3.Nuvi 255 does not have mp3 ability.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730
